View Full Version : [REL]Kim Ronhof's SH4 Report generator ver. 5102
Kim Ronhof has graciously released his SH4 Report generator ver. 5102.
When correctly installed it should automatically find all your saved games. Just double click on the appropriate saved game. The program then creates the patrol report and copies it to the Clipboard to paste into Word or a Text file for further editing.
JANAC Tonnage will vary according to your realism settings.

Wow!!!!
Is this version compatible with supermods (TMO, RFB, FOTRS) or only for vanilla SH4?
Many thanks and best regards!
Fitzcarraldo :salute:
Yes, for sure TMO & Stock but as it gathers data from Saved Games and basic SH4 files that are universal to all installs, it should work.
If it doesn't know if a Warship or Maru it will ask.
Kim did an outstanding job with this and it was nice of him to publicly release it. It won't conflict or cause damage either :)

This tool is great; it's been too long for SH4 without its own SH3 Commander - like tool; this one is close, its simple and is doing what it supposed to do; only thing I would add is some html code added to generated report. Could be perfect.
You could cheat and use BLOCKQUOTE inside a <P> under <HEAD> with margins and BODY once you get your text edited... and <br>'s at the end of every line and paragraph if you want simple html.
I just did one by hand in Notepad in about 4 minutes.
- or just paste the text into Word or a html email.
Some of these text editors like NoteTab make simple html docs too.
WYSIWYG ..... lol :)
Happy Hunting!
----------------------------------
Edit - I just now selected this #7 message individually and viewed the source code with my browser. Down at the bottom is my (this) message with <br /> tags inserted at the end of every line, paragraph, and space breaks between the sections right where you need them. Copy that message block inside the bottom <DIV> </DIV> tags and paste it into Notepad, do a search and replace to change the <br />'s into <br>'s, and most of the work is done! Then wrap that inside <P> <BLOCKQUOTE> under <BODY> and <HEAD> with % margins, and close it in reverse order: </P> </BLOCKQUOTE> </BODY> </HTML> and you have a usable formatted html doc in less time than it took to edit this message.
Of course you would paste your formatted text patrol report into a forum post and use that - not MY message but you get the idea - I hope.
When I try and set the path I keep getting an error that say's SH4report_5102 " Invalid file name ". I don't get a full report at all just the a few lines.
Also when I try and set the path it gives me this error message. " isn't a valid integer. This is in the " sea " folder.
The instructions and numerous pictures show how and where to install it.
The Report Generator goes in My Documents - your SH4 folder there, typically SH4 - then inside that saved games folder to the actual SaveGames folder where all your Saved Game folders are - numbered:
00000000
00000001
00000002
00000003 etc, etc.
If you can see those folders that is where the Report Generator goes just like as shown in the picture.
Since you ran it there is probably an ini file in the folder called, SHReport4_0.ini
Delete that. Now, open the Report Generator from inside your SaveGames folder and try to find your SH4 install where the game is installed on your Hard Drive using the "tree" on the right. Just like in the picture.
I don't know what you are doing in the Sea folder.
Do what the PDF doc says. Click those 4 empty boxes if you want then click "Set SH4Path" button.
Close the Report Generator and there should be a new ini file... "SHReport4_0.ini" - Now open the Report Generator and double click on a saved game that is saved at Sea not in port.
It should make a report.
From a manual Kim wrote:
Errors:
During the installment - and setting the path of the SH4 game files errors can occur.
One these errors are invalid file name - you've got the wrong directory or more likely
you did not click on the directory before you clicked on the ChangeSH4Path button. Click on
the SH4 main directory, and then click on the ChangeSH4Path button.
The other is; "is not a valid integer" - same remedy.
If you can't follow the instructions it might be better that you don't try to use it. Sorry but some people can't. It is okay.

Thanks for the tips. I also noticed in the ini file is something like "use html" set to 0 or false (cant check right now as im on different OS) - any idea about that?

Yeah, I noticed that too. Could be he was planning ahead for a future version with that function, or a personal version for his use only.... I don't know.
Other programs he has made in the past use this same type of theme and I was lucky to get a special version of a SH1 tool with extra features a couple of times. I'll ask him but I'm thinking it was for a yet unmade future version.

Gee thanks for the patronizing tone aanker! I did everything like the friggin pictures said! When I try and create a path after I check off all the boxes ( keep in mind mister computer master that I have allready put the exe in my save game folder in my documents, I know where it is. ) it shows the little folder tree- and it looks something like this- C, program files, ubisoft, Copy of silenthunterIV, data, roster, japan, sea. It went there on its own so I am not in any friggin sea file! And buy the way I am clicking on the main SH4 directory before I click on create path. I can read you know.

I'm not sure I understand whats your problem?
Just go back to C:\ProgramFiles\SilentHunterIV and click on "Change path".
Main game directory is where exe is located.
You need a save file made at the end of patrol, but right before entering homeport.
I see two messages:
Help
When I try and set the path I keep getting an error that say's SH4report_5102 " Invalid file name ". I don't get a full report at all just the a few lines.
and
Also when I try and set the path it gives me this error message. " isn't a valid integer. This is in the " sea " folder.
I am not a mind-reader and don't know what you need - it is not clear. Also I don't want to be coming back for each step.
So I break it down, step by step, trying to make it as easy for you to understand as possible.
I'm thinking:
Wrong install location? All that is mentioned is, error messages and "sea folder".
Clicking the wrong button first?
Did you try to make a report out of a saved game at port?
I can't tell what is wrong from those posts.
If you felt I was talking down to you, I wasn't intending to.
Well, hopefully you got it. That's the main thing.
Peace.

Ok, just for clarity because the readme was a bit vague.
Will this not generate a report from a game saved after you dock, you need to save just before you dock and then use that file? I click on the file, hit change path, get same error message.Hell, when I click on the report icon in the documents folder to open up the report maker, it says invalid directory, eh.

You need to set game path only the first time; after that, for example - to make report from your second patrol, you just choose proper save file from the list on the left (double-click). I didnt try to use in-base save, I do what manual says (or was it aanker?) to save before ending patrol and use that save, so not the one called "onenteringbase".
If you screw it just delete ini file (located in the same directory as the report generator: documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames) and start the tool again - that way you will start from scratch:
1. choose game path (like c:\games\ubisoft\silenthunter4) and click "set path" button;
2. select save (double click) and the tool will start gathering info from that save; it will show in the text box below and also copied to clipboard, so you can paste to Word, Notepad, HTMLKit or wherever you want.

If I remember correctly, your game is installed to program files directory, right? Maybe that is the cause of your problems while modding (generally). Maybe I'm wrong, maybe not, but try to run the tool as admin, or - just to try it once to exclude this possibility - disable UAC, restart the PC, and try the tool once more, with ini file deleted - just in case.
(My SH is installed on D:\ partition, which is all just for games; its a good practice to avoid system partition and program files directory, especially with games like SH4, where there is a lot of modding going on (not just because of security etc., but also disc fragmentation).
And by the way, I have UAC disabled on my Win7x64, but once it was enabled, every time I tried to copy something into program files, it asked me for confirmation, etc., maybe that report generator needs some data from your main installation dir, like ship names or something, and it can't acquire access to it).
Bubblehead, just delete the ini file in there with the report generator. That is the solution for those error messages.
1.) Delete the ini file
2.) Start up the patrol report tool
3.) Set your path to where your game is installed - the main folder where sh4.exe and the JSGME.exe, and MultiSH4.exe are. Make that folder be the blue highlighted folder. Don't worry if there are folders hanging below it like: Data, MODS, RegistrationReminder, Resources, and Support, or subfolders of Data.
4.) Click the button top right that says SetSH4Path. It will probably change to Change SH4path later.
5.) Close the report tool. Open the report tool and double click a saved game at sea where you have seen some action and saved before returning to base. Call it :'Last Save" or something then return to base.
Once that ini file is created and the tool can make patrol reports you are good to go from then on.
I'm trying to help, so if you know some stuff, maybe someone else doesn't.
Any error messages and the ini file has bad info and must be deleted and remade.
That's all...........
Happy Hunting!

That is exactly right. It needs to know all kinds of information from the actual game install plus the saved game data.

Followed all your steps, got an error message that said cant find path C:/ , it was a long message. Disabled UAC , didnt change anything with the invalid file name message either.:damn: For some reason, this tool is not wanting to cooperate. I guess I will try install outside program files, just aggravating since thats where it installs by default.

Do it again and post that error massage here, so we can have a look at it (if its long do a screenshot).
Check the ini file if the tool has recognized SH4 install dir at all, like for example:
GamePath=D:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific -(that is mine);
if there is such info, then its really may be some privileges issues; if not you can put it there yourself and see what happens - but thats desperate :)
Not sure what version of Windows you are running.
in Win7 (as you know) they use libraries .... hmmm. Could try approaching this the hard way....
Go to Computer Disk C:\
Open the Users folder
Open your Username folder
Open My Documents folder
Open SH4 folder
Open Data folder
Open cfg folder
Open SaveGames
The Report tool goes in SaveGames folder where all the Saved Game folders are - numbered:
00000000
00000001
00000002 etc, etc.
If it is in there I'd right-click on it and Send To ---> Desktop (create shortcut) and at least have that shortcut to open it with. Grant Admin OK when asked the fist time.
Please don't get frustrated with me, trying to help. Really strange error message. I'd like to see it too.
The game can be in default location but many including me use a directory off the C:\ drive - or D:\ drive like Stranger.
Mine is inside C:\Games_SH4\Silent Hunter Wolves .....

Now, that is embarrassing (go on and laugh :D)
The generator was working, but reinstalled the game, started new campaign, did 13 patrols and got an idea to do reports off them, and this came out:
http://images40.fotosik.pl/1605/252c2db60880bba2m.jpg (http://www.fotosik.pl/showFullSize.php?id=252c2db60880bba2)
http://images49.fotosik.pl/1567/da427d5adece0356m.jpg (http://www.fotosik.pl/showFullSize.php?id=da427d5adece0356)
I do everything correctly, the only difference from when it was working is the games directory, which is different now (and the name of sh4 folder is longer, but english letters only). It also is in folder with other games, when previously it was SH4 only (like d-games-sh4) -- don't know if it matters or not.
As you can see it can see my save games, but it cant set the games path. I tried everything, deleting the ini, even looking in registry if I have correct paths there - does the generator look in the registry for sh4 at all?
Oh, and it does write correct sh4 path in the ini, but still displays those errors and can't generate anything.

Your 2nd picture here is correct. This is the folder you should select to create your ini file by clicking the Set SH4Path button. It looks perfect, you just have a corrupt ini file.
Maybe you need to manually delete the ini file by going into your Saved Games folder where the report generator is and delete it, then get the path to Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific looking like this again - or highlight it if it cascades down, don't select the lower folders like Sea..
Comprendevous? :)
stanger
06-02-12, 01:34 PM
I tried all that :/ That error on first picture: I didnt select sea folder manually, it went there by itself, but it does that only when double clicking sh4 folder (so the directory tree expands). When I only select sh4 folder by clicking on it once (just like on the 2nd pic) it display that second error. So: :damn:
But knowing that it still writes the game path in the ini file, I tried to ignore those errors and generate a report and got a message that it cant read or find jsgme.ini but it looks for it one directory up.
Its frustrating to not have at least some lead to how resolve this problem, cause it would help at least two other people here too.
Let's try this. Open the file: SHReport4_0.ini using Notepad. Right click on it, select Open With, select Notepad.
If that Mouse menu doesn't work, open Notepad and Navigate to your My Documents SH4 Saved Games folder and using File Name: "All files (*.*)" - NOT - "Text Documents (*.txt) open the SHReport4_0.ini file that way.
This must be done with a text editor, not Word or Wordpad.
Looking at your screenshot to get your path I think Yours should look like this:
SubRonName=14
ComandersName=Name
Rank=LTCDR
PatrolArea=Dummy
ModdedOn=true
HtmlOn=false
TorpedoDataOn=true
SectionSpacesOn=true
WeatherDataOn=true
GetWarningsOn=true
GetordersOn=true
GamePath=D:\GRY\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific
You could copy this and paste it into yours and use it - if I got the path right.
Your sh4.exe or gu.exe is in your Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific folder right? Right click on your game shortcut and under Properties - Target - it will show where your sh4.exe or gu.exe file is.
The folder that has the sh4.exe or gu.exe is the folder we need in the ini file.
"D:\GRY\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\sh4.exe"
Disclaimer:
Before anyone gets upset with me for making simple instructions I am also writing this for 'somebody' in the future who may not know these things. This way if they do a search and find this post they will have simple instructions that they can understand. Someone in a post up there blew a gasket at me for explaining to a future novice. Please do not get offended or upset!
Good luck :)

Nope, manually editing the ini causes the "integer value" error to display before the main generator window open.
But what may be that file name that is invalid to it?
Other lead: aanker, is your jsgme "mods" folder name default? I mean did you change it when you first time launched jsgme? Cause I did this time, but didnt last time, when the generator was working... and it may not take into account that that name can be changed by a user... (just trying to think of something).
It looks for and possibly expects to see the MODS folder that the JSGME uses so it can list mod's used and also to get Ship class names that, for example, Ducimus uses in TMO that are not in the stock game.
Our campaign used a required mod so everyone had a MODS folder. Other than that one mod we were not expected to use any mod if we didn't want to. The generator isn't expecting to see a mod, probably just a folder named MODS.
Wonder if it would work to make a blank folder named MODS? You may have solved this mysterious error.
- - - - -
Edit - apparently not.
stanger
06-02-12, 06:45 PM
No, changed mods folder name to MODS, and changed it in jsgme.ini too, jsgme still works, but the generator doesn't. Maybe it reads jsgme.ini to find the mods folder (and second jsgme.ini with mods list), but I did look at the generator exe file with hex editor and found "Mods" folder specified there, so I thought I was onto something, but not (it looks like).
It's either too long name of sh4 folder or some programming issue (but why it decided to manifest itself now and not before).
What double quotation - " ,the one from one of the error messages - means, if anything, in delphi (cause it looks like it was written in delphi), maybe its some wrong usage of it in the code, I don't know :-?
And just in case: one more difference between my current sh4 installation and previous are mods used - TMO before (when report gen was working) and tmo+RSRD now (not working). But it probably doesnt matter in this case.
Too bad. I doubt RSRD would matter.
We didn't use the stock campaign, added similar bases as RSRD does, and the stock special missions were not used, instead all special missions were 'new'.
Post back if you figure yours out please.
Luckily I never had any trouble even though I was always editing and changing mods.
Am I the only one getting reports where aircraft all have the last letter of their name deleted?
I.E. Zero Fighte, G4M Bett, and Search Plan
AFAIK you may be. I've never seen that 'last letter drop' before. He programed the names of all stock aircraft, marus & warships - some with longer names, and may have included TMO extras the mighty 'D' added too.
Curious....
Looks like it reads SaveData.clg and that ALL the entries are having the last letter removed.

Looks like it reads SaveData.clg and that ALL the entries are having the last letter removed.
1850 tons appears as 1850 ton
Oh and I'm running stock v1.5

Okay, maybe something is corrupt in your install... (??)
... or, more likely, are you making a fresh save just before returning to base, maybe call it, "Last Save" then resume your patrol into port and End your patrol. You would then double click "Last Save" to try making your report using the tool. That might fix it....
I'm using Stock v1.5 for this example, except my roster includes hull numbers, so basically thee same conditions as yours:
Report tool recognized 'new' command, from USS Pampanito (SS-383) to USS Skate (SS-305):
190101 APR 1944
Report from USS Skate (SS-305)
Patrol area : Pearl SpecOPS 08
"ton" is correct in the program, not tons:
'Large Old Passenger Carrier' includes the " r " in "Carrier".
040155 APR 1944
Ship sunk! Large Old Passenger Carrier, 9557 ton
Long 130° 27' E, Lat 26° 10' N
- although I'd prefer to list the Lat first and would usually hand edit it to Lat _, Long _:
Lat 26° 10' N, Long 130° 27' E
He removed the "'s" in "Precipitation " through the program so that is correct:
141501 APR 1944
Clouds Partly, Precipitation None, Fog None
Wind Speed 8 meters per second, direction 231.
- I learned meters per second can easily be converted to mph:
meters per second x (roughly) 2 = mph
.... and:
(roughly) 0.5 meters per second = 1 knot.... to help you decide what to wear on deck.... lol
See if a fresh "Last Save" helps because I'm stumped...
Happy Hunting!
Do me a favor and shoot down a plane or two.
While ton may be correct, I don't see aircraft in your example, and I'd like to know what you get.
I have been using fresh save games.
I done some coding, and I wonder if the program is set to truncate the last letter to make tons ton as that's the last word of ship sinkings, and that planes weren't taken into account.
Hmmm.
Now every save game, even ones that had been OK (save for the aircraft names) are now FUBAR. All now come up with no sinkings and 0 torps fired etc.
Game works perfectly, but the report generator does not.
One final question, is it supposed to work with Career save games? That's what I've been using.
Yes, on patrol saves, not in port saves.
The report generator is in the folder where your saved game folders are which is correct.
You've only used a text editor like notepad to open the *.clg files, not Word or Wordpad etc.
Your clg file seems to be corrupted.
You aren't adding previous patrols to it and keep a running total, which is possible to do... some people like to do this.
To rule out the report generator, download a new copy.
Here are 100's of successful reports:
http://pacificthundercampaign62842.yuku.com/
Stock games, TMO ships are also listed, RFB installs too.
I'll try it when I get a chance, but I will say that I have only read the CLG files, not saved them. I did so with notepad+
As far as corrupt files go, as I said they load in game fine.
One thing that did change was that I activated a mod that adds a nomograph to the nav map, so menu_1024_768.INI was changed, but I would not expect the report generator to even look at that file.

I also prefer to use a text editor called NoteTab Pro which is a plain text editor (I set the font to Courier New 10 pt).
If Notepad+ is a "rich text" editor, that may be the culprit. Ideally Notepad should be used, or a similar plain text editor so there are no hidden characters typically used in rich text editors.
An astronomy program I use specified that any plain text font used to edit its files needed to be Courier New, Regular, 10pt - and I've always used that for text editing anything, however I'm unsure if that is important...
from Wikipedia:
Notepad+ is a freeware text editor for Windows operating systems and is intended as a replacement for the Notepad editor installed by default on Windows. It has more formatting features but, like Notepad, works only with plain text. It can open text files of any size, and a single instance of the program can have multiple files open simultaneously. It supports dragging and dropping text within a file and between files, and supports multiple fonts and colours.
Man, I'm stumped.
On the website with patrol reports, I recall one member for sure sunk numerous aircraft and they were correctly listed in his reports. The aircraft were 'parked' for the night/day at a Jap base, and were on floats. The generator correctly listed & credited him for sinking them.
I really wish I could help you, however I can't think of anything that would cause this behavior in the generated report.
If you ever find out, please post the solution here to help someone else if they encounter this.

BINGO - Nice find, though I doubt there is any interest in changing it, best option is to hit Search and Replace >>> fighte >>> fighter... etc.
When he first made the tool I was mostly happy to just have the Lat and Long computerized to lessen the tedium of writing that down from screenshots of the logbook before we knew what files to look at and when.
I think I've nailed it down.
What you called a "port save" has far fewer files the saves you make at sea. Among the files NOT in a port save is "savedata.CLG"
The lines for aircraft destroyed and ships sunk is taken word for word from "savedata.clg" and the last letter is being stripped from them.
I take it that you didn't code this little utility, and I assume the source code is unavailable?
No, however I helped test the alpha & beta versions on my install, others on their installs. There were a variety of different modded installs used & tested.
I almost never shot down planes, well there is the SHCE trick shot with the deck gun but that gets old, same in SH4.
Attempting to be historically accurate, I always dived for aircraft.
Everyone was begged to report errors, nobody reported any, and I didn't experience any.
I can contact Kim & see if he is interested in 'fixing it'. I don't want to impose however I'll ask.... point him to this thread anyway.
Typically I made a save just prior to ending my patrol and used that extra save for the report data.
A simple Search & Replace can add the missing last letter if Kim isn't interested in revisiting the past.
Think of all the info the report generator does conveniently gather and spit out, Date, Lat & Long, ship class sunk, torpedo data, weather data, orders, 'warnings', a pop up box for listing special missions. None of this was easily accessed before, especially those who didn't enjoy digging through files.
Happy Hunting!
Update, Okay, when Kim has some time, not right now, he said he would try to fire up his old computer - providing the battery isn't dead, and maybe take a look to see what is going on.
In the meantime, Search and Replace will add that last letter : )
I felt bad asking him, he is such a nice person!
When you dock the files that contain the sinkings are lost ! Thats why you have to make the report just before you dock - Kim Rønhof

old post, I know but
Now that FiFi has his "Dark Waters" sh4 mod out and running I have benn looking for something like sh3 commander and stumbled onto this mod.
I can set it all up but it wont run before a certain date in 1941.
Since the DW mod starts in 39 I was wondering how to make this mod work for me (and othres)

It was originally written for the US side of the game, December 7th onward, and Art (aanker) has passed away, and as far as I'm aware, was the only one here with a connection to ronhof. I have the little app on my computers. I'll look to see if there is any help for what you're after, but I doubt there is... it'll take a few days to get to, so remind me in a week or so, if you don't mind... I are gorfetful anymore... :roll: :salute:

I did do a quick look-through on the executable, and it is compiled, the data not immediately recognizable. Maybe after a few experiments, I might get somewhere, but he did not have a "date" variable visible, but might be using a "variant" data type... dunno - I haven't looked at the contents yet. :salute:

Sorry. I neglected to post my "findings" - rather, lack thereof... I haven't been any good at hex editing since the C-64 8-bit days (and wasn't that good at it back then), and I couldn't figure anything out. I'll keep trying every once in a while when I find the time... :salute:
