As a life-long Robert E. Howard fan, I am really enjoying the Game of Thrones series. It has the rich tapestry of Hyperboria with a wide array of fascinating characters whose interlocking ambitions really ramp up the plot.
Anyone else watching this series and want to discuss?
It took me a while to get all the story elements down but by the middle of Season 1, I was almost done asking "Who is Daterias again?" :)
Spoilers now allowed.

Last night was a doozy. I was wondering how they'd top the infanticide in the first episode this season. The scene in Littlefinger's brothel topped it. Yuck. :rotfl2:
The books are great. I read the first one and got ahead of the series as I couldn't put it down. I'm not doing that for the second season. I'm only reading along with the series, and not ahead.
Theon Greyjoy's sister Asha is pretty....ah....mannish looking, isn't she?

First season has just been broadcasted in Germany, on three evenings with 3 episodes each. Unfortunately I had to miss the second evening, but by the 1st and 3rd TV evenings I agree, it was very well done, I'm looking forward for the second season, in Germany probably late this year, or in the next.
I also liked that they managed to not show the limitations of their budget, but cleverly working around that so that you are made to believe they worked with a very big budget indeed. That is solid craftsmanship.
Not any of my most favourite series, but definitely a very good one, very good standard.
Following the series too, was a bloody long wait for the 2nd season. :haha:
Easily one of the more interesting one's from HBO, the cast is quite amazing
and no one really seem out of place in their role. Tyrion is great, nice to see
Peter Dinklage in a big role.

This is one time I am going to put the books on hold until the series concluded in 5 years or so, then read them. I am a big fan of good lit but I think the series is amazing and I want to keep the sensation fresh as I watch it. Looking forward to reading them in my retirement :)

Yeah, it's hard to imagine a treatment this big on TV, and it would have been ruined as a three hour movie. Thank God for HBO.

Dinklage is great. He absolutely steals every scene he's in. I'm rooting for Tyrion all the way!
Dinklage is fantastic, but then, nearly every cast member is superb. My ex colleague's former boyfriend plays the Hound. Having met him once or twice in the past, i have to say, he's nowhere near as scary in real life!

I'm hfway through the final book, and I still have no clue who's who. Think you're confused now, wait till book 3 ( not sure how the series correlates).

According to an interview I read a couple of weeks ago, elements of the third book will be moved into the second season, and elements of the second book will be moved into the third season. Fairly sensible decision, I think.

He'll have to do something drastic before season 3.
If the scripts followed the books as closely as season 1, you'd have a bunch of ticked off ex-viewers wondering why thier favorite characters weren't in season 3 at all.
Mr. Martin has promised not to do that again, btw.

I still haven't watched the first season but I've read all 5 books, only finished up A Dance With Dragons last week. Long slog but totally worth it. Brilliant story so far.
Now to get caught up and watch episode 4 so I'm at least making head way on the show and can start watching season 2.
Tyrion, Jon, Arya and surprisingly Dany for me are my favorite 4. Can't wait to see season 3/4, book 4 was a great little side story told from a great number of less important but still plot relevant characters.

The only rule, and I mean THE ONLY RULE, you have with this series, and I mean the books, is don't get attached to any character. As soon as you like them, they die.

Outstanding last two episodes. Wow, so many plot points wrapped up or advanced. This is TV done right (like Breaking Bad, unlike Sons of Anarchy and the woefully dumb Walking Dead).
So now... then long winter until season three... :wah:
As much as I love the show, the slow pace is really starting to tick me off.
I thought first season was slow, but then came the 2nd and it was 8 episodes of
pretty much nothing and 2 episodes of quickly wrapping things up to a cliffhanger
ending. :damn:

But what a cliff hanger! Wow! last nights episode was fantastic in so many different ways.
I'm really enjoying the show. I think the pace is just about right and rather than the 'Sopranos in Middle Earth' tag it got landed with early on, it's seems much more like the Wire now in the way it doesn't hold your hand when it comes to remembering who that character who appeared for a scene in series one, episode 5 is when they reappear, and what plots they fit into.
I also like they seem to have done the moral ambiguity of many of the characters correctly. what I mean is they haven't been shy of handling the more human side of characters like Little Finger, and they've done it in a subtle and believable way where it could have been very heavy handed. For all the blood and gore, there is a lot of subtlety in the books.
Can't wait. It'll be April before it's on, won't it? :nope: Well, Sky are showing their new Sinbad show in a few weeks which might be good for a laugh. I wonder when the Borgias and Boardwalk Empire are coming back?

That's good. I really didn't enjoy the first season of Boardwalk Empire, but the second was one of the TV highlights of the last year. I think every problem I had with it was remedied. I'm glad I stuck with it.

Haha.... No, seriously, Walking Dead = dumb. The idiots in the show never do anything except proclaim "He can't protect you, only I can protect you" over and over and over. Great line for a drinking game. :haha:
And no one in the show does a single smart thing: no one gets a safe perimeter set up with 10' fencing and reinforced posts, though they have weeks to do it. No one rounds up a couple of bulldozers with reinforced, enclosed cabins. Though they have weeks to do it. Where are the 4x4 trucks with supplies and ammo? Dumb. They argue over 'who's the daddy', one of the most stale plot devices ever, and so very out of place in a world of zombies, hostile bands of people, and end of the world stuff. Boring!! And when they disagree, they get in fistfights in the middle of the zombies. :88) Dumb! In the finale, they fight zombies in the morning for an hour, jump in TWO cars with empty fuel tanks, then stop on the side of the road to camp so they camp so they can "save gas" and get more in the morning? What?? WTH? It's like 10 am in the morning, and where are they that another gas station isn't like 12 miles away?? And what difference does it make if they wait 18 hours for dawn, they still have the same amount of gas in the fuel tank? Are they "safe" there? Hell, no...lol. But it's a great place for one guy to tell his group he's in charge and is their dictator. Oh god, it's so funny.
Yeah, it's a great show, in a MST3K kind of way, Mookie. Sorry :O:

Maybe you watch it first and safe your silly claims for afterwards?
Additionally, TWD is not about killing zombies, it is not a splatter series, it is a drama series.

Drama series set in zombie apocalypse. Much of what I saw of it (season 1 + 3-4 eps of season 2)
showed it to be little more than 'The Bold and the Beautiful'.
That's just my opinion of course.

But it is officially a drama series and the point is not smashing heads in. Still, I can't see where RedOctober got the idea from that there is not enough action.

I saw the commercial and I saw action. I figured I'd watch it. I actually watched the first two seasons and couldn't stand it. There is too much drama. Even though it is classified as a drama show, there needs to be more "actually surviving the zombies" instead of pissing away their time doing pointless things. :hmph:
I'd just much rather watch Dawn of the Dead, Zombieland or some other zombie movie. I even saw the crappy Syfy Zombie Apocalypse and i thought it was better than TWD.

[Spoliers below...but srsly, who goes in here if he did not watch the latest episode?]
It wasn't gold, it was protection.
He could not just do what he did and get along with it, at least not without a mighty friend who protects him. And this friend was Tywin. Frey's motivation was revenge because Robb broke the marriage pact by marrying Talisa, not one of Frey's 'beautiful daughters'.
Tywin knew about this, so they started to conspire. The Red Wedding was the result of this conspiracy. Tywin also invited Roose Bolton to this conspiracy, who eventually kills Robb Stark.
You guys remember, before the carnage started, Robb teased Talisa by saying 'maybe I've made a mistake' (by marrying Talisa, not the Frey girl, since she was indeed surprisingly beautiful).
Boy must he felt stupid a few minutes later

Since Mad Men has wrapped up their season, I just might. It would be a nice excuse to sit down and take a break from other stuff. Plus it's hard to be on the internet at all and not find out stuff, and I'd hate to leave it to the point where too much has been spoiled.

I'm a sucker for behind the scenes stuff in movies. After watching both season 1 & 2 on DVD (read all the books), twice, I went back and listened to each of the commentaries of each episode. I really enjoyed Martin's commentaries on the couple episodes he narrated. Listening to his mindset on adapting the books to the screen while still telling the story the way he wanted to was really enlightening.

George Bush’s head on spike:
Season 1, episode 10: According to the directors, they couldn’t get enough prosthetic heads made up for the show and ended up using the spare one’s lying around. One of those just happened to be the fake head of George Bush, which eventually ended up on a spike.

Episode 9 continued in what is a GoT tradition--a really intense episode where the plot is advanced through suffering and spectacle.
With all the squalling from women's groups about the "rape" scenes, I think the sacrifice in episode 9 is far and beyond the most heart-rending scene. It fit into the story perfectly, the first time we met Stannis and the Red Witch in season 2, they were burning people alive. Westeros is a brutal place, without elements like this, the red wedding, and the brutal treatment of people, it would slip into Disney mode. GoT does not pull any punches.
That was offest by the glorious coliseum scene. That was a helluva show, it rivaled Hollywood for staging and effects. That Clark can emote more with one eyebrow than a lot of A-list actors. Very thrilling. Looking forward to next week's finale!

Yes, I must admit, this weeks episode twisted the dagger much more than the rape of Sansa. You knew it was coming but you still hoped that either Stannis would change his mind or the Onion Knight would ride in and save her. But no, and it's this brutality which sets GoT aside from other series of its kind. It's not afraid to throw heavy punches. Sure it gets a bit cliché in places, but when it lands one, it hits hard.
The coliseum scene was indeed glorious, although one does have to wonder now that the Queen of Dragons has flown off like the kid from Neverending Story on the Luck Dragon...errr, what about the poor sods she left in the coliseum with a couple of hundred Sons of the Harpy surrounding them.... :dead:
Still, I suspect that the dragons are going to get a feast, because if I were Dany I'd be sorely tempted to toast every single 'master' in that city. Or perhaps go full Targeryan and just toast the entire city... :haha:

Somehow even before the big scene, I found myself thinking of Iphigenia.
Connections:
Stephen Dillane, who plays Stannis Baratheon, was Thomas Jefferson in the John Adams miniseries.
Lena Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister, was Sarah Connor in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Not really important, as she's played a lot of good roles, but...
Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, is also playing Sarah Connor in the upcoming Terminator Genisys.
The chap behind Bronn, Jerome Flynn is also fairly famous in British circles for being one half of the 'Robson and Jerome' duo that started in the TV series 'Soldier Soldier' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_Soldier) and then made their way into the music charts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robson_%26_Jerome).
And whenever I see Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Friendzone) talking to Danearys with Emilia Clarkes dyed hair, I can't help but think of this scene:

My hope for episode ten is seeing an outcome to the predicament facing Cersei and the look on that female jailors face if what Cersei has promised comes to be.
No doubt Tyrion will come away from the arena safe and sound.
Eyes to the skies folks....eyes to the skies.
High time for Cersei to get her head chopped off.
I've really started to dislike Dany. She has transformed from a strong leader to a teenage girl, letting her emotions dictate how to run her little empire (and that has gone well lately..)

I think Dany has been given a bit of an idiot ball, I think it's meant to show how much of a stabilising influence on her that Jorah Friendzone had been up until that point.
Some of the writing of this season has been very heavy-handed, and some of the twists have been a bit obvious in approach. However, I must admit I did not see last episodes one coming even though in retrospect it was pretty well signposted.
Cersei...well...
I don't think she'll get the chop, as Jim has alluded to, she will have to do her walk of shame which means that Jim gets to see naked Lena Headey. Or at least that's how it is in the book...whether they'll keep that in the TV show is another matter. There's been a lot of divergences from the book this season, which admittedly makes sense since they've now run out of books to adapt from and so in order to set up the cliff-hangers for next season they have to make the alterations in this one.
I think that:
Kevan Lannister (Tywins brother) is going to arrive at Kings Landing and start trying to recover the cluster fornication that is the current Lannister state of affairs, this will lead to a more stable Lannister base to take on Stannis next season. Cersei is going to find herself having to work around Kevan in order to further her goals, just as she had to with her father.
Stannis will win the siege of Winterfell, but his victory won't be shown in next weeks episode, it will end on a cliffhanger. Ser Davos is going to face a major crisis of loyalty, but I'd wager that he'll stay loyal to Stannis but might try to kill Melisandre, he will fail, of course, and then he'll probably be banished or exiled, since Stannis will have gone pretty much over the edge.
Sansa will get Winterfell, but there won't be much of it left, and since winter is here there will be mass famines and trouble with the wildlings that Jon Snow has let through the wall. She will find herself having to deal with the wildling problems, rebuilding Winterfell and having to outwit Littlefinger who will be trying to claim the north for his own. Perhaps through trying to marry her to Robin Arryn in order to unite the North and the Vale into one power bloc.
With any luck Ramsay Bolton will die in a particularly horrible way during the Siege of Winterfell, perferably by Sansa and 'Reek's hands, I dare say that Brienne will play some part in the safe-guarding of Sansa in the final hours, but she will not be able to stay around when Stannis forces take Winterfell, she did serve Renly after all.
Ayra is going to kill Trant, most likely by posing as a prostitute and then poisoning him with the stuff meant for the thin man. Jaqen will punish her for disobeying orders, but will be grudgingly impressed by her methods and her resolve.
That's my take on it anyway, I'm not sure quite where they're going to take Danys storyline, only that I'm fairly sure that Daario is involved with the Harpys in some manner. I'm also not sure how the Tyrell situation is going to be resolved, likewise with the Militant Faith. But I can see the next seasons major conflicts being between Stannis of the North and the Lannister alliance of the South, while the Zombeh armies of the Far north prepare for their assault on the wall.
I could be wrong, in fact I'm sure that I will be wrong on quite a few of those, and in many instances I hope that I am wrong and that they'll throw some unexpected twists in the tale. They have done so far. But we'll see. :yep:

Well, as far as the story goes, it does serve as a really good illustration about the difficulties of ruling, the complexities of managing a foreign populace. And she had several conflicting sources of advise...so now Tyrion may serve as a better counselor. Dany has always been a lot naive, and it has cost here, but to her credit, she has resisted going full Stalin, which makes her character interesting and one we can root for.

I find something about Laurie's accent a little "off," but can't quite put my finger on it. There is actually a good chance I have a bias knowing he's English, but I don't know that, either!! (I think it's extremely difficult to find someone who doesn't have a bias when evaluating accents)
I always thought Bob Hoskins did a flawless working-class American accent. And the guy who played Wormtongue supposedly shocked everyone when his filming was over in the Lord of the Rings to reveal his American accent, as he stayed "in character" the entire time.

Actually, it was pure speculation based upon what I've read on the wiki about the books. :03: That and the fact that all the current plot hooks point towards it. :yep: Like I said, some of the writing has been a bit clumsy.

I really enjoy GOT, it has a rich ensemble of interesting characters, lots of intrigue and drama. I rank it up in my top 5 of all TV series for quality. There are stretches where the characters are examined at length, always really good dialgue. Some people want a major battle or set piece every episode, but GOT delivers a good proportion of high impact episodes. The only warning I give to friends who decide to start the series, understand that you may need a program to keep track of the characters in the beginning. The show does not spoon feed the viewer, you have to keep up with who is in which family and what their background is... but it is well worth it.:salute:

I'm in two minds.
I'm looking forward to the royal (literally) buster-duck that's going to occur with House Tyrell fighting the Spanish Inquisition with the Lannisters egging them on, then House Aryen goes up against Bolton and whoever sides with them and Jon Snow leads the wildlings against Winterfell. Meanwhile House Dorne aren't going to just sit in their sand dunes while the rest of Westeros falls apart, you can guarantee that as soon as the Tyrells redeploy to Kings Landing, they will start agitating in the south.
Meanwhile Daenarys just took control of one of the largest armies on the planet, and one of the least disciplined, but she has no ships, so she won't be going across to Westeros this season, but will probably wind up skirmishing with the other cities nearby.
There are a couple of things that get me though, some things just seem a bit too cliché, and would the Dothraki really allow themselves to be taken over by a woman so readily? I guess we'll find out next episode, but it just seems a bit too cliché in places...but we'll see how it pans out. :hmmm:

Season 6 in February 2017 in Germany, if going by the past examples. BIG SIGH. They always get broadcasted in free TV in the early months of the year. We just have had season 5 this February. And then it often is 2, 3 or 4 parts in one evening.
Pay-TV has it some time earlier, but I do not book that.

Game of Thrones: ‘Hordor’ Moment Came From George R.R. Martin’s Notes
which makes sense, seeing that the show is beyond the printed material. I bet it is interesting, the show scriptwriters working with Martin to complete the series.

But seriously anyone who is behind in the series ought not to be reading these threads if they're that concerned with seeing spoilers. It's not fair to everyone else to have to hide everything behind spoiler tags and it just stifles conversation. I say just put a spoiler warning in the thread title and let folks say what they want.
But seriously anyone who is behind in the series ought not to be reading these threads if they're that concerned with seeing spoilers.
I agree.
Maybe edit the title to read 'HBO's Game of Thrones (Season 6 Spoilers)' or something.
Some good moments and some questionable moments of sanity in this episode.
My biggest bone to pick comes with the Iron born, who seem to have been given the idiot ball that started this season in the hands of Dorne, went to the Dothraki male leaders and has now travelled to Pyke.
Are the Iron born that stupid to take a look at a well known reaver, who has loyally served them for all her life, is one of the best sailors they have and who wants to build a large fleet and maintain their independence and then choose a bloke who supposedly went nuts while at sea, who has disappeared for years on end and vows to roll over and sell the independence of Pyke to the Targaryians at the first opportunity.
Also, given that Pyke is seemingly not dissimilar to the far islands of Scotland and Scandinavia, where are they going to get the wood for these thousand warships? :hmmm:
I'm guessing that a lot of forests in the North are suddenly going to go missing. You can picture the scene, Jon Snow and his army of Wildlings camped out in a forest, and they wake up in the morning and find themselves in a field with no trees around them. :haha:
And their initiation ceremony for new rulers is a barrel of laughs, imagine how many times it must have gone wrong, that must have been embarrassing, just standing around on the shoreline with this dead body there, "Errr...right...looks like we backed a loser here...anyone got the number of the next of kin?"
Otherwise though, it was all quite good, the Hodor connection was nicely done, the play at Braavos was a nice look at how the common folk are seeing events play out, although given how popular Joffery was in Kings Landing I'd have wagered that he wouldn't have gotten quite a noble portrayal, so chances are that the play was probably commissioned by the Lannisters. Reminds me a bit of how Shakespeare portrayed Richard III whilst writing under a Tudor monarchy. :O: Nice cameos there too by Richard E Grant and Kevin Eldon.

But

I actually liked her little chat with Ser Friendzone (who may or may not be no longer hopelessly in the friendzone!? :hmmm:), very inspiring... I scratched him off as "dead for sure" but now I have hope to see more of him.
He's cheesy, but I like him somehow.
Compared to the last season, this one works well for me so far. Some events happened surprisingly fast. Bolton, Jon actually seeing Sansa, Jon being back in general etc...
The last season was incredibly slow-paced, this one is rather fast, so I don't quite understand the criticism some give it.
Some episodes to go. We'll see. Just no more Dorne-stuff please. These sand-ladies are ridiculously annoying and I can not take them serious at all, mostly due to their bad performances last season. They seem... off.

Episode 7 proved to be more entertaining but I think they (the producers) are building up to a number of finales that may need more then the remaining three episodes in the series to do justice to......unless we are to be left hanging on some of the sub plots and awaiting series 8 for more outcomes.

However, overall the episode was really good.
Blackfish was an idiot though. I can't understand his reasoning.
He was cunning, tough, smart and experienced - not in this episode however.
Brienne was spot on and I am not convinced by "muh dis ma home!" when he dies anyways.
By leaving he might have had a chance getting it back later after helping Sansa, who could have needed his help for sure. Honestly, I dare to say: Lazy writing.
Still, "I chose violence!" made it all OK again. :)
Blackfish was an idiot though. I can't understand his reasoning.
I can't understand the reasoning of anyone in the castle.
In episode 7 no one seemed to care if Lord Squareface had been executed right there and then. Come episode 8 and everyone's like "Oooh, but he's our lord! We must obey him!"
It's like there are two teams writing the show in S6 and competing how they can screw the other team over.
Team 1: "People liked that whole trial by combat stuff earlier, let's do it again!"
Team 2: "Lol, nope. Not allowed!"
Team 1: "We haven't had any real big battles in a while, let's have a siege! That'll make the watchers happy!"
Team 2: "Sorry, can't have that either! :rotfl2:"

You might actually be onto something there. The episode where she makes her big decision ends with her waiting in the dark, sword at the ready. In the next episode it's like she didn't see it coming at all. They seem to have her waffling a lot.
