View Full Version : Those Damn Buoys!

OK, this is just another one of those posts of mine whining about the flavor of the free ice cream, so don't take it as a criticism because it's not. :DL
I've noticed, with my aging system, that one of the "bottlenecks" giving my FPS's a real hit in the face is when I enter an area where there are a lot of buoys, particularly the exits from Kiel.
Now, I love the added immersion of those clinking, clanging thingies without which a real port would be unable to function and I can't begin to express my admiration for Trev in adding them to the sim. That's dedication above and beyond the call of duty if you ask me.
But since the sim apparently interprets them as vessels with all of the CPU cycles that means, it does hit me right when I don't need any hits. I don't want to make do without OHII, that mod is one of the mods that makes SH5 worth loving in the first place, nor do I want to make do without the environment that makes everything so much more real (not to mention that I tried loading OHII without anything but the Base Mod and it didn't kill the buoys), but I can do without the buoys as I'm fairly good at navigating without them. Several years at sea will do that. I like them fine, and when I get enough shekels saved up to upgrade my old Phenom box I'll be putting them back in, I just don't need them enough to justify the CPU load.
So I was wondering, and this is not a request for a new mod, if there was a way of just killing off the buoys and keeping everything else in the enviro package?

Yes Misha - this is easy to do:up:
Got to C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\data\Campaigns\CampaignProjects\Total_Germany and delete the file Harbour.mis
You will need to do this will all 11 campaign folders.
(the bouys are in the base OHII - not the enviro)
You will need to restart your career or wait untill you progress to the next campaign stage before the the buoys will delete.
When you next run the game (after deleting the harbour.mis) the game will notice they are missing and create a new harbour.mis, but it will have no information. Thus - they will be gone:DL
:har: misha starting a new campaign again.... i think i've re-started about 10 times, but i've lost count and haven't even completed the first missions....:yeah:
Same here. Several restarts, the farthest I got was January 1941.
Misha: GET THAT NEW CPU ALREADY!!! (just teasing):D
I love the buoys. Especially at night. Just the light and the bell

Restart? RESTART? RESTART???? :Kaleun_Crying:
You're killing me here! :haha:
Seriously, though. Thanks. That's great news. It's only in the harbor, so I can live with it until Coastal Waters is done and I won't have to restart.
One little question, though: Doing what you suggested isn't going to do other odd things to the harbors, is it? I mean, I do so love the way the harbors look (and the buoys too, but my ancient rig doesn't like them), and I seem to recall something about them being modified a bit, meaning that the Harbor Pilot script might not work (as in crashing me into piers) if they get changed. Minor stuff, I can plot my way out if I have to, that's what I used to, but that Harbor Pilot of yours is pure genius and I'm a lazy... A lazy you know what :DL
Misha: GET THAT NEW CPU ALREADY!!! (just teasing)
No kidding, Swat! :DL I need a new rig like anything (but considering I got three years out of this one I can't complain), it's just that getting a new CPU isn't all there's to it. I'll need a new MoBo, new RAM and, worst of all, the dreaded reinstall which is complicated a bit by the fact that I was too cheap to get the full Windows install disk the first time so I'll have to get one of those as well. So I might really just as well build a new box (minus the GPU, of course, since I have a race horse there already), which is what I usually do anyway. I'm already saving up pennies :DL

Me too! I love everything that Trev and the gang has done for us, they're bloody brilliant and ought to be showered with gold by Ubi for their efforts, considering that nobody would play this sim if it hadn't been for the modders. And I guarantee that as soon as my next rig is built, all of the bells and whistles will go right back in :yeah:
But this way I'll be able to keep it chugging along until that build without cutting out anything that is absolutely essential.
Thanks again, Trev, you're a king among men! :salute:

I hate you too, flostt :O: No, I don't. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with the "Restart Every Week Syndrome™" which, I have to be honest and admit, is my own fault a lot of the time since I just can't seem to live without constantly adding new mods :D

Oh, and speaking of my mod addiction, we really ought to form a group called "Moddoholics Anonymous" or something, because I know I need help :O:
In all of my years of SubSimming I can't remember ever seeing some detail added by some tireless modder somewhere that I thought "that's just silly" about. Quite to the contrary. I would always check it out and then, after looking at it for a few minutes, decide that my life simply wouldn't be complete without it, that the rest of my existence would be utterly meaningless if I didn't add it to my mod soup and that the mere thought of going through life knowing that somebody, somewhere was using this mod and enjoying it while I wasn't would be completely intolerable to me.
So I'd download it, enable it and, oh yes, restart for the umpteenth time. As a matter of fact, of all of the career "ends" I've had in all of those years, only about 2% of them were due to Tommy actually killing me and my crew. The rest were due to mod restarts. The modders were actually more dangerous to my career than the enemy in the sim :O:
Do I regret a single one of those reloads? No, I do not. I am in complete awe of all of the little (and not so little) things that get added all the time, and even more in awe of the people who make it happen. It's to the point where you have to be careful about mentioning what you'd like to see because you just know that out there, somewhere, is a helpful modder who'll happily spend the next three weeks making your wish appear :DL
At one point I was talking to a new SubSimmer about what made SH5 so awesome compared to the earlier versions and one of the many things I mentioned was the water splashing around inside the sub when you had flooding damage. I was almost about to mention that it would be really cool if the water also had pieces of paper and Bernard's stuffed teddy bear floating around in it when I realized that if I typed that out and published, some great guy somewhere would go without sleep for a month if necessary to make it happen. And now that I've said it anyway, I must apologize to that guy in advance for depriving him of his rest so that we may all have Bernard's Drowned Teddy™ appear in our game. :O:
But I'm seriously off topic here, so I'll stop. Just wanted to say thank you once again! :salute:

Deleting the harbour.mis will only remove the buoys.
There are a few ships that will go, but these are historical dated ships and in unlikely you would see them anyway.
Kiel is hard on your system - you may find that when you move to the next base that things improve without removing the buoys
If you are looking for better performance - removing the mines, dolphins etc may be your best bet. This is done by using base+ships

Excellent, Trev, thanks!
Considering that I'm going to be transferred to Wilhelmshaven in about 10 game days anyway, I think I'm just going to let it sputter along as it only IS in Kiel that it limps (which is perfectly realistic as Kiel IS a busy harbor). Then if it still stutters too much, I can kill the harbour.mis file and wait for the next campaign to see if that helps. :DL
Perfect. Thanks again :salute:

The better terrain V3 one?
If so, I've seen it. Do I install that on top of OHII or is it meant to be a replacement?
