View Full Version : [REL] Ship Names April 2012

Yes, it's back! I was updating the Ship Names files every month, when exactly a year ago my computer got hit by a virus. It made my entire desktop disappear, so I had to reapply all the icons I had there. I started with the Ship Names mod, then found out that nothing was lost - they had merely been converted to Hidden files. Unfortunately I had already replaced the Ship Names files with ones from February, which means I lost two months' work. I was so frustrated that I just quit doing it.
After ten months off I got the bug again (not the virus, but the sickness that makes us do weird things) and picked up where I had left off. So now, exactly one year after the last update, is a new Ship Names list.
Thanks to redoing those two months' worth of work, I've only added 21 new names for a total of 11795. I probably redid 500 in the process.

As always, load directly into SH3 Commander/Cfg and overwrite the old one.

Motor Vehicle as opposed to Steam Ship or SS
Basically means ship is oil powered not coal :salute:

As BBW rightly states.

Well, almost. It means "Motor Vessel", which is a small thing, but more importantly it means the ship is powered by diesel engines, not steam. Some sources call the MS or M/S for "Motor Ship", and some even sort them out by type, i.e. "Motor Tanker".

Actually I was more concerned about the "oil vs coal" part. Both are fuel for steam engines, so are still "SS".

I'm not sure where Jim got his picture. I'm sure he has some he took himself. If you want to look at ship pictures the place to do it is here:

If you're asking about my ship names, I own several books with records of merchant ships, and I have a list of ships that sailed in the British Convoys. I use that list and the books to find out what kinds of ships had what names, and I put them into the list created by JScones for SH3 Commander. It's slow work but not hard.
