No, not that John Denver song. :88)

I am currently working on a mod to finally eliminate the problem of destroyed engines/destroyed rudders stranding the player permanently. I have been thinking about this problem for a very long time. After much tinkering, experimenting, tweaking, and testing, I am happy to report success. :woot:

What this mod will do is allow the player to repair previously destroyed rudders or diesel engines and limp home. The effectiveness of the repaired rudders will be greatly reduced, but will still work. And the repaired jury-rigged diesel engines will allow a top speed of about 2 knots. Please note.. this is not a cheat. They will be permanently damaged at greatly reduced effectiveness, but will do the job to get you home.

I am currently ironing out the last details, but should be releasing it in a day or two. :arrgh!:

Testing Take Me Home 1.0 beta in Vanilla SH4 1.5 has given me the following results so far playing with Salmon class sub:

Diesel engines that were destroyed, and then partially repaired back into a working, but permanently damaged state- 5 knots on the surface flank speed. No battery recharging possible. Good enough to get home, but may take quite a while.

Rudders that were destroyed and then partially repaired back into a working, but permanently damaged state- very wide-turning, making the sub unwieldy. I like it. :DL

Propeller shafts that were destroyed and then partially repaired back into a working, but permanently damaged state- 12 knots on the surface flank speed. More than good enough to get home. :yeah:

Diesel engines and propeller shafts that were destroyed together and then partially repaired back into a working, but permanently damaged state- 3 knots on the surface flank speed, 2 knots submerged flank speed. No battery recharging possible. May be good enough to get home, but you'll need a bit of luck, too. :yep:

This mod will actually work quiet well with the repair sub mod. You can limp towards the repair spot and get the engines fixed.
