How can a merchant ship spot me

From over 10,000 metres away, I am using the very good M.E.P v3 mod but I think it would be just about impossible for a merchant ship to spot me fro that far away. :hmmm:
I have used the mod for a while but for some reason it just came to me and had me wondering

The furthest I've been spotted is just over 11km. I was going ahead standard and the Granville was 45 deg. off my port bow. Crystal clear day and sea like glass.

The only time I ever approach within 8km on the surface anymore is in rain or after sunset.

Coming in decks awash can get you a bit closer, but not close enough to make a significant difference in clear daytime conditions.
