View Full Version : Easy way to get ship silhouette's back...?

I'm running TMO 2.5, RSRDC and OTC on manual TDC mode but would like my ship silhouette's back as the dot is not allowing me to properly lead and target a known area of a ship
What's the best way to mod them back in?
Does RSRDC have ship silhouette's or the TMO Black dot?
Thanks

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do this. Each ship's "dot" is located in the Data\Sea\Shipname folder, and it's named differently for each ship, with only one thing in common: they all end with _shp (and they're all in .dds format, with maybe a handful being in .tga). As an example, go to your TMO2.5 folder in your MODS directory and look inside Data\Sea\AuxGunboat. You'll see a bunch of files, and among those there will be a AuxGunboat_shp.dds file. That one has to go. Then, move on to Data\Sea\AuxSubchaser. What have we here? A AuxSubchaser_shp.dds file! That one has to go, too. You get the picture, right? You'll have to delete each and every Shipname_shp file, not only in TMO, but also in RSRDC and in OTC (RSRDC for TMO uses the "dots", and CapnScurvy has added the dot on a few ships that lacked said file in his mod). By doing this, the mods won't replace the stock images when you load them.
But here's the catch: both TMO and (more so) RSRDC introduced new ships. So, if you delete the Shipname_shp file on a ship that doesn't exist in stock game, when that ship shows up in the game you'll have nothing on your map. No dot, no silhouette, nothing!
As it happens, however, I happen to like my silhouetted ships on the map. As it also happens, I'm using the TMO+RSRDC+OTC combo. I also happen to have lots of free time at my disposal, so I've done just what I described above, plus assigned a stock version of the silhouette to all ships that come with TMO and RSRDC.
I'll upload my version in a bit, if you're interested. Pizza just arrived and my wife will kill me if I'm late to the table :haha:

There is a mod that restores original SH4 silouettes. I no longer have it on my computer.
For TMO, I believe TMO Plot mod does the same thing, but as I recall the silouettes are not in color, but are black and white.

Nope, that one is for RFB users. It will add the dots from TMO as map contacts instead of the RFB no contacts at all approach.

I mentioned two mods. You, the ever delightful Mr. Beast referred to one, ie, "that one." Which one, may I inquire, is "that one?" If it is the TMO Plot, I would find it hard to believe that it is used in RFB. I have used it in TMO, unless my recollection is failing me.

Sorry, my bad. Men can't multitask, and my sloppy quoting of your reply is testimony to that
Yes, I was referring to the TMO Plot. From its description:
"This mod for RFB 1.52 only, replaces the standard RFB plotting system with Ducimus' plotting system from Trigger Maru. All target locations are shown by a position mark only (no silhouettes), friend/foe/neutral colors are gone, target notations of ID, course and speed are gone, zooming in does not make the target vanish ala RFB. If you love RFB but hate the plotting system this mod is for you." Bold parts by me.
I'll do a search to try and locate the other mod you referred to, the one you were using once and which restores stock SH4 map contacts. Wish me luck! :D

I think the TMO Plot restores the ships to TMO. I have never used RFB with the plot, but I have used it with TMO. If it is designed for RFB that may be the reason why the coloring of the ships is removed in TMO. Rockin Robbins lists this plot below his signature, so he may bear some responsibility.
If you search for "silouettes" in the mods forum, you might find it. I am playing with map contacts disabled, so I don't need them. Plus, if I can't see them, they can't see me (or something like that.)

:hmmm: perhaps you would like to build on this? A complete TMO 2.1 shapes package: http://www.mediafire.com/?jm9twkoa2tjnz29
If yes - and if you update it to TMO 2.5 :D - then please share!

Yes, that's exactly what I've done. Only touched the Sea folder, though, and I've also added stock map contacts to all RSRDC ships - which shouldn't cause any problems if you don't have RSRDC, by the way.
As for the aircraft...I just checked the TMO Air folder, and apparently old Duci has done away with the map contacts on all aircraft. It's just a blank texture :dead: Luckily, however, OTC reinstates the stock graphic, so all's well! Will add those to my mod and upload...hope you guys don't mind rapidshare, it's the only place I've subscribed to

It is not TMO Plot. It is EZ Plot. That will restore the silouettes, but they may be black and white as opposed to original colors. The download may be in the subsim download section. TMO Plot --EZ Plot---I was close.

Good for you Doc!!
As you know (and many that don't), by using the RSRDC mod adds about 50 new ships to the already dozen or so that TMO adds to stock. For someone that builds a mod like OTC, compatible to others, these added ships need to be given their just due. Dimensions like ship height, ship UnitType, carrier plane load outs, all need to be confirmed to be in sync to what the original authors intent was suposed to be (within reason to what your own intentions may be).
I took the liberty to re-add the plane silhouettes for the included RSRDC for TMO (v502) mod because there is always the option of removing them through the "No Contacts Updated" enabled feature. Besides the use of the OTC radar having the planes displayed, I just couldn't resist to put them back into the game on the nav map.
Regarding the original ship silhouettes for the nav map, that's a great idea to put them back with a mod. There's no way to have your choice of either the TMO "dot" feature, or the stock ship silhouette without a mod. I know why TMO changed the ship nav map ID's from a silhouette, to a dot. The change was to keep the actual direction of the target hidden from the players knowledge. In most of the RSRDC's ships, even the "dot" is missing from the files. You'll get nothing on the map when these ships are present. Putting the silhouettes back in for all RSRDC/TMO plus stock ships, is a large undertaking.
To answer the original question of this thread, "Is there an easy way to get ship silhouettes back?" No, not at all. EXCEPT for someone's hard work to upload a version that does it for you.
Thanks DrBeast!!
