Hello, just joined this forum!
How does anyone like to mod/play SH3?
I have been playing SH3 with Grey Wolves X 3.0 Gold with Commander for a long time, probably the best game setup I've ever played, if you haven't tried it, highly recommended. Darker water, named ships with cargo type, realistic deck gun (more hits needed), more detail, simply a much better game.

I usually start in August 1939 to get a start towards the Western Approaches or west of Gibraltar which has been the best area for tonnage so far. I've only sunk two ships in 3-4 years of playing bigger than an auxiliary cruiser: HMS Ramillies and a small carrier. Damaged another battleship but it escaped. If I survive the first few years the FaT torps and acoustic homing fish for destroyers in an attack run are clutch. Game's extremely challenging, but not bad, after '43 or so. Getting depth charged used to make me overly cautious. Now, I sometimes flank directly towards a destroyer, change the torp depth to 2.5 m and fire straight into it at 300m! Risky. If that doesn't work, just go deep, hard port or starboard, reduce speed again. Never successfully deck gunned an ASW ship ever...Anyways....

Does anyone have comments or ideas on multiplayer (Can I play someone else with this setup, is it stable, or do you have to go back to vanilla SH3).

How hard is it to edit the existing game files yourself, do you want to, has anyone and what for? Find out where capital ships are.

Is there a mod, or I had an idea for one, to basically keep track of your tonnage, and at some point you can win? Or what happens in '45? I've only made it to early 1945. Say, at a certain amount of tonnage by a certain year, you can force Britain into an armistice or with enough even win...

Like to hear some ideas from other enthusiasts of this excellent simulation.

Thanks!

It's a good thing most members never post, otherwise you'd be getting several thousand different answers.

That's the basic setup most of us use. You're preaching to the choir, but don't stop. We love hearing it.

I usually start in August 1939 to get a start towards the Western Approaches or west of Gibraltar which has been the best area for tonnage so far.
I also start in August '39, do a quick turnaround, use Commander to set my crew up the way I like them, then set 'Days In Base' to 18, which lets me come out on the 19th, which is when fourteen boats were historically sent out to wait.

On the other hand I've been playing subsims since 1986, and the sheen of "best area for tonnage" wore off for me long ago. I go to my assigned grid and stay there. If I come home empty-handed, so be it.

Does anyone have comments or ideas on multiplayer (Can I play someone else with this setup, is it stable, or do you have to go back to vanilla SH3).
That I can't answer. I loved multiplayer with SH2 and Destroyer Command (though both games were extremely lacking by themselves), but co-op multiplay just doesn't do it for me. Sorry to be negative, but it's just my own attitude.

How hard is it to edit the existing game files yourself, do you want to, has anyone and what for? Find out where capital ships are.
Very easy, and I do it all the time. I do it mainly because I have so many mods installed that I keep my own copies of Commands.cfg and Dials, so when I add something new it's easy to just reinstall the files I made last, rather than rewrite them every time. As for capital ships, again I no longer care, as that's not the way it was normally done, and a realistic feel is the name of the game for me.

I've never actually played beyond mid-1940, but everyone who's finished the war says that it ends, you surrender and that's it.

You can never win just survive. NYGM mod is a tonnage mod, and quite good. It is worth an additional install.

True, very truthful words...:lurk:
