not using TDW UI, and for a not to intelligent person, how do you work out the speed of a target.
please keep it simple and easy if that is possible please.
i keep missing my targets, and it's the speed issue that is the problem.
help please anyone.
many thanks.:salute:

The way I do it in SH3 is mark the target on the NavMap ... start the stop watch and time out 3 minutes and 15 seconds then re-mark the target
Take the ruler and measure the distance between the marks and times by 10 will give you the speed of the target
I haven't played SH5 long enough to see if the same principle applies here but I would think it would but with the different UI mods ya never know

approach your target with low speed (maybe 2 knots), if it closed in to a range lower than 3000 meters, make distance measures using the stadimeter, repeat that at least 3 times, with at least 30 seconds time in between the measures. After that, you should get a good "estimated" speed using the XO targeting dialog (estimate target speed function).
accuracy depends on own speed, distance, and time in between the measures, dont forget to set the targets relative (from your view`s) bow position (AOB) correctly, fire if the target enter a 80 to 90 deg position.

Use the RAOBF - most UIs have them

If it's a convoy reported by BDU - you already know it's speed.
If not I usually using RAOFB: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqX1n5dxFow&t=3m47s
Other methods:
1. Place marks on map at same periods of time and calculate speed yourself. I hope everyone knows that speed = distance / time.
2. Use U-Jags Chrono http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1655674&postcount=54
3. If you submerged sonarman can say how fast ship moving. If I have no time and/or no opportunity to calculate speed, I set 5 knots for slow moving targets and 10 for medium speed. If ship is big (like cimmaron tanker) and distance is less than 1000 meters - it usually enough to hit.
4. Ask XO for estimated speed. You should set correct distance and AOB before measurements. Best results will be if you are stopped. But this method never worked good for me for some reason.
P.S. It's all working with TDW UI mod. Don't really know about stock game.
