To keep from cluttering up others threads with my nonsense and WIP things?
I'll place it all in this thread.

Everything I have ever done was inspired by requests or comments from our fine little place on the 'Net.
So feel free to post images or requests of things like better Weapons models or what have you.

I hope this thread also helps to give new modders confidence as they start out.
No one knew it all when they started modding SH and know one knew how far one could go.
We still have not seen the limits fresh ideas can take us to!!

I'll be posting images of different stuff in the works or done in the past as I bumble along.
You'll also see a list of names of all the great people that helped me learn stuff,
or assisted me with thier contributions in SO many ways.
I can't express my thanks to them enuff.
:salute:

From the way back machine here's an image from my early days here at Subsim.
:D

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Sub/Blimp4.jpg

You probably know it better like this.

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/SH4_K-Ship2.jpg

ref and JU_88 were far more important to this then I was.
ref guided me to get the damned thing to actually fly and JU_88 did the Gondola work.
My 3D skills at the time were 'lacking' for want of a better phrase.
:haha:

Close to follow were the Barrage Ballons.

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Sub/SH3Img1-2-2007_18-1.jpg

I've never been really happy with them and may re-do them at some point.
:hmmm:

The first Ship I ever kit bashed for SH3.
The River Class.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Sub/River_5.jpg

Mush Martin requested it and along with BBW, gave me advise and taught me many different things about modding Units.
:salute:

The dreaded ASW Trawler!
Mostly a kit bash with some adjustments to stock parts in 3D.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Sub/ASW1.jpg

SH4 also had a better version of this type Trawler on release.
:yep:

I was REALLY bad at 3D work at the time.
:nope:
I got better.
:D

The Army Sea Forts.
Better known as the Maunsell's

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Army_Sea-Fort.jpg

Sergbuto had done some work on this same subject but never released it.
I found his work fascinating in many areas.
I was pretty bad to him at the time.
:nope:
I did mend that bridge (I know there may still be some grudge but I deserve that) and highly respect many things I learned from him.

Those forts needed something to fire at.
We always say 'stay out of the Channel' so they get lonely!
The V-1 was created when I had a really bad time going on with my White Huskey.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Better_Flame.jpg

The amazing DivingDuck helped (Did most of the work) on the flame effect.

Keep in mind that this was all done with Hex Editors!
There was no S3D at that point in time.
:o

The Air Raid Siren was created from a discussion at the GWX Super Secret Hide away.
Better known as "The Lair".
:D
It looks like a standard Spot Light but has a few additional add-ons to get the sound.
It has a gun attached that fires a fake shell.
That's how the sound gets called.
The V-1 and Air Raid Siren share a common thing. Both use actual recordings of the real deal from WWII.
:yep:
I used Audacity to edit the sound files and adjusted whatever needed to produce the effect you hear in GWX.

Well if you're into forts you should get your hands dirty doing the two that reside in the Humber:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humber_Forts

Both a bit derelict now but had times of glory almost a century ago. And it'd spice up this part of the east coast as the ports of Grimsby, Immingham and Hull aren't best represented in the world of SH3. And Grimsby is definately missing it's biggest feature -

Funny you should mention the Humbar Forts.
:)

When working on the GWX for SH4?
We started many new things on Forts and such in the Channel and on the Atlantic Wall.
:yep:

There's one Old Fort in the Channel that I'm going to buy when I hit the Mega Millions Lottery.

I approve of this thread. If only I had the slightest idea on how to do 3D modeling...

Madox58

Grab any free 3D modeling program and just mess around.
That's how I learned what little I know now.
:yep:

I started with GMax and for the most part?
It's still an very good program to work with.
Misfit Modeler is another I like.
Wings3D and Blender are liked by many but I could never really get into them myself.

Somethings I never did finish.
Dye Markers.

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Dye_marker.jpg

Shells fired often had this to help adjust range. Aircraft dropped them also to mark where a Sub was spotted.

Udet
Started but never released.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Udet_WIP.jpg

Mikhayl did his own version and release them.

Editing of animations is taken for granted today with S3D as a Tool.
There was a time when they were barely understood.
Working with ref and DivingDuck?
That was changed!
The very first complete keyframe animation change came from a fantastic mod by Mikhayl.

http://s108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/?action=view&current=Animated_Doors.mp4

As far as I know he deleted the original Development thread?
:hmmm:

Part of the final answers to this problem came from what I figured out doing this for Mikhayl.
ref and DivingDuck were informed and ref wrote the first Tool for working keyframe animations.
He soon followed with a Mesh Animation tool.
skwasjer was working on S3D about this time and he was informed of what We knew.

Somewhere along the line?
Von Dos needed a few custom Guns for his work.
I was glad to take it on.
Released as Guns for his work, they were placed in GWX of course.
:DL
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Guns_No_Textures.jpg

Note that SH5 has the same Guns (Different Models) now and even have the Gun skirts!
:D
It may just be me and wishful thinking?
But I kind of like to think they are Thanking me in a way.
If it's not that?
Please don't tell me! It would ruin my whole day.
:haha:
The Dev's for SH are GREAT Guys!!

Turms Your way.
This also came from requests posted.
TDW did a version that I found convoluted to use.
I'm not saying my way is better. Just different approaches to the same end results.
Mostly I wanted others to take what I did and copy the way I did them.
Then release all the other Turms.
Sadly this did not happen so we only have what I have released to date.
There is not a complete version for every Turm in SH3.
I doubt I will do the rest any time soon.
It just does not interest me any longer.
(This is all Hobby work and if it don't keep my attention? It's scrapped.)

A special name dropping to ANVART.
:yeah:

I can't even begin to explain how much information in many different areas this Guy is the Master of!
:o

He is a hard one to understand at times (It's the translation thing), but well worth the effort involved!

I place him right up there with ref and DivingDuck as the Top 3 Teachers I have ever had the Honor of knowing!!

As the years and Mods roll by? I have become friends of many Great Modders.
Rowi, TestPilot, The Frog, Alex (or Adrian as I like to refer to him), and SO MANY OTHERS!!
One thing I try to never forget is the fact that working together has always improved what We do.
As older Modders with the years and knowledge? We owe it to the newer Modders to assist and teach them so they can grow.
Far down the road? They will thank us in return and the Game will only get better!

One of the biggest issues I see today on many Mods or Mod attempts in the 3D area is the famous 'smoothing issues'.

SH Games have a very weird way of dealing with this so all 3D work must adjust to that.

For the most part? It's detaching objects that solves it.
Take a simple box. It has 6 sides. You need to detach each side for a crisp render in SH.
A sharp box should have 3 objects detached at the very lest.
When you go compound objects? The program you use can affect this rule.

I'll provide the 12 pounder shields as an example of a compound object rendered nicely in SH3 if done correctly.
I usually run My parts through MeshLab to reduce unneeded faces or verts to reduce file sizes.
This DOES NOT WORK for all objects and may cause problems!
You need to check in Game to be sure.

Of all the places in the world, you want to live on one of Palmerston's Follies.

If you ever end up living the dream on one of them, living in Portsmouth i'll give you this piece of advice, don't go swimming in the sea, use the swimming pool that's hopefully on the fort. A mate of mine went swimming off of southsea beach a few years ago and got a condom stuck to his face!

I have to say it was very funny at the time, but thats the kind of thing that will put you in therapy.

I'm not going anywhere nor retiring from messing with SH Games.
Just reminiscing a bit as another year has rolled by much to quickly!
:o

And again, I hope any new Modder starting out gains confidence seeing this thread.

I was trying to think of something I did that was an original idea of mine alone.
I can only think of one thing and I never released it to anyone.
I was mostly messing around with ref's Terrain Editor when the Sci-Fi bug hit me.
I saw one of those 'The Germans had Flying Saucers' things they have on different channels from time to time.
Neu Schwabenland was carved into the South Polar region with the Terrain Editor. I covered the whole area with a 3D mesh so you could not spot it with the external view camera.
The ONLY evidence I have left of this 'playing around' are the images below.

With the release of skwasjer's S3D the need for Hexing things was mostly gone.
(There are a few areas that still need Hexing as S3D can not address them.
But that's for later on.:D)

I mostly enjoy, and can concentrate on, working with the 3D stuff now that people can work the files themselves.

Another thread caught my interest and 'Kurfurst's Schnelltauchback' was the result.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Sunday_Test_1.jpg

This is another one I've never really finished to my satisfaction. I do still have the files for this though and may get around to tweaking it.

Ace's was doing some great work blending different mod's for the Turms into a workable package. Along with that headache?
He was adding new ideas of his own useing different 3D models from the Game.
The MG-34 on the Turm was one of those ideas the Community brought up.
The original in Game model just don't cut it when you view it that way.
I like doing Weapons so I threw this out as a 3D mesh for anyone to use as they wished.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/RENDER_TODAY.jpg

Ace's and TestPilot both took advantage of the offer.
I'd like to make this usable in Game at some point.

I have to point out that danlisa and Dowly have been giveing me pointers on textureing when ever I ask them for help.
Both are still my 'Main Go To Guys' when it comes to PhotoShop stuff.

Hi Privateer,

first of all, I'd like to thank you for all the great mods. I'd say, there not a single guy and Frau, of course, who is playing without work done by you.

As a German:O:, I'd say that Neu Schwabenland is a nice concept. So why not release that?

"For historical reasons" would be your answer. Well, the concept itself is not a secret, but its a fact today. Or, were do you think the thing that came down in Roswell / New Mexico 1947 did come from? A weather balloon.... :O::D:O:

As a guy from Flensburg, I'd like to see the Naval Academy at Muerwik ingame. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Academy_at_M%C3%BCrwik)

Why, you ask? Well, it has been one of the torpedo schools, some uboats were here and been scuttled at the end of the war. The Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_D%C3%B6nitz) assumed the office of President (Reichspräsident) of Germany from May the 1st until May the 23th 1945, when he was arrested there. And it is likely the largest building in Flensburg. Oh, and all the sea traffic caused by the evacuation of Ostpreussen.

I often take a break with my uboat here in Flensburg for a cup of coffee and for being awarded the newest self-knitted tea-cozy made by my girlfriend. :O:
There are already so many bridges, bunkers, pens and other land units in the game, but Flensburg is all empty.

Well, I have seen a computer before, but no idea where to start a model of a building... But you did ask.

I usually don't like it when people make demands for something they won't learn themselves, but I finally worked up the courage to ask for something you mentioned ages ago - the animated lifeboat. I much prefer the liferaft mod that you guys finished, but I've been using Iambecomelife's version instead, just because it has the big boat along with the rafts. I remember you saying that you were working on a full-sized animated boat, but never finished it.

Puleeeeeze? :D

Madox58
01-23-12, 04:13 PM
Good one Steve!
:yeah:

Everytime I see the current Life Boats they bug me.
To square looking for me.
A more rounded look would do them good.

The Large Boat I did for SH4 is what I plan on useing in the SH3 mod.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/New_Boat_2.jpg

Which also brings me to the statement I made about S3D not able to address everything and Hexing is still an important Tool.
I use S3D and have no complaints with it! Hell I even did some work on the CS files to address SH5!

In the image above, notice the color of the oars.
Those are in the SH4 animation which has yet to be totally opened up for modding.
So you can not re-UV them!
Hex to the rescue!!
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Oar_Colors.jpg

I was able to change the textures by editing the dat file itself.
Us Old Farts that still hex stuff come in handy now and again.
:D

This was also the 1st model I started useing Softimage Mod Tool 7.5 to do my AO stuff and Njob for Normal mapping.

The K-Gun in SH3 bugs me.
It's not correct for the early years at it's worst.
And at it's best still bugs me.
In GWX, We stuck a Guy near it so it looked like it 'might' just be a manned weapon.
:haha:

I've got a start on the 'ThornyCroft' DC throwers MK I version.
The model is pretty simple but I wanted that bit of 'pop' in the texture.
I want the ThorneyCroft Logo to stand out like a cast-in thing like the originals.

danlisa was The Man to bug once again.
:D

A few tricks and examples from him will be used on the final version.
Along with animations that do a better job of making it look like a manned Weapon.
:03:

This thrower, along with the 12pdr, were started for the Bathurst project.
I still have that in an active folder on my Desk Top.
Started as a partial kit bash useing some stock textures?
I've dumped all that and build each part a piece at a time.
I follow the basic rules for SH rendering so some parts still look like the parts found on existing Ships.
(Hey, you can only build a box one way right?)
All textures are original and change as I learn (Bug danlisa or Dowly) more.
The list of credits for the Bathurst include JScones, Blue Zulu and daughter (who made a personnal visit to the Castlemaine to get me pictures!), and Tarjak (Who sweet talked Blue Zulu into going.)

Oh! and reaper7!
He re-UVed the main hull for me cause I was getting frustrated with it.
I still have a lot to learn and I'm not to proud to ask for help when I need it.

Regarding that Naval Academy again, the great advantage is, that it is still there, unchanged. So, if images are needed, floor plans and stuff, that shouldn't be the biggest problem. If sources have to be translated, no problem.

Your maps are great, I can even see the house I live in.

On google maps there is a good image from above if you type in Flensburg marineschule mürwik

I've collected 80 images of the Marineschule Mürwik so far.
Being in the construction business? This building is a Master Piece as far as I'm concerned!
I noted that there was/is alot of work takeing place to repair/restore it.
I did track down many images of the repairs in process from those hired to do it.
Outstanding work by them! I'd have loved to be involved in some of that work.
:yep:

I tracked down a proper brick texture and Roof tile texture also.

What I have not found is any basic plans with dimensions.
Not from lack of trying mind you!!
Any chance that you could find something like that being local?
Many sites like that have tourist things that give the basic dimensions with drawings.

Also found a few sites with details of the nearby Bunkers.
:D

I may add the model to Bing Maps 3D if I can do a good enuff version.

The bunker on your image has a house on top. The guy who developed and built that house is an architect and a friend of mine.

Regarding the plans and maps, I will try and do the best I can.

One question, if you don't mind: Are you going to build / model the whole complex? Please keep in mind that the area is 14 square kilometers / 9 sqare miles.

I thought of that beautiful main building only which can be seen from the sea side...:hmmm:

Edit: If you are interested in bunkers in Flensburg, visit this page (http://www.luftschutzbunker-wilhelmshaven.de/flensburg.html) and this (http://www.luftschutzbunker-wilhelmshaven.de/flensburg2.html) and this (http://www.luftschutzbunker-wilhelmshaven.de/flensburg3.html) with a nice view of the Acadamy

The main building and the walls and such down to the dock area is my goal.

I can use the over head images from the many maps to do a basic layout of everything.
It will be a rough scale unless We can obtain more accurate information.

Oh, and for those interested? The Brick Pattern is known as Monk Bond.
:yep:

I love that House by the way.

Maybe your friend could find a bit of information for us.

Unrelated..............

I am pretty sure that this project is a real challenge, look at the details:

http://static.panoramio.com/photos/large/5301647.jpg

This (http://www.google.de/search?tbm=isch&hl=de&source=hp&biw=1440&bih=735&q=Marineschule+M%C3%BCrwik%2C+Flensburg&gbv=2&oq=Marineschule+M%C3%BCrwik%2C+Flensburg&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=0l0l0l8405l0l0l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0) would be too easy.

Oh, and I am glad to introduce a bit of my silly little town...

I'll try to get in touch with the Commanding Officer, let's see what happens...

Madox58

The biggest challenge will be the texture work.
I'll keep the face count as low as possible of course to fit with SH needs.

But I'll also work on a non-SH version for the fun alone.
That will not require limiting the 3D details.

Early testing of my layout pattern.

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n12/privateer_2006/Early_Test.jpg

I also have a pretty good scale from the same map that will come in handy with some adjustment.
It breaks down to 10 meters but I should be able to get it broken down to 1 meter markers.

I did some adjusting to the map from this site this morning.
http://www.truppenmannschaftsbunker.de/objekte/objektefortsetzung/flens3/bu.html

I doubled the size then cut and rotated the layout to use as a pattern.
The scale was cut out as a seperate image to make a scale I can move around in 3D.
:yep:

It's a rough way to work but much better then some other things I've had to guess at scaleing for.
Once I get a section scaled to a known size? it should be easier to work the rest from all the images.

The Roofs appear to be around 20/12 pitch I'm thinking?

I rang the Katasteramt of Flensburg today. That is where all the buildings are recorded to make sure that they are within the borders of the owned property. And to calculate the correct taxes, of course...

That guy told me to visit him in the office next Monday. He will try to give me the most detailed map of the building. Thinking of "Deutsche Gründlichkeit", that will exactly be what we want... :D

Speaking of the roofs pitch:

http://img.fotocommunity.com/Schleswig-Holstein/Flensburg/Marineschule-Muerwik-a21654794.jpg

Look at the roof of the turret on the left in the back of the photo.

This page (http://ankerplatz.npage.de/kuestenbilder_87372181.html) contains an image of the roof that could help to find out the angles...

Madox58

The plans sound great!
:yeah:

I leave Monday for Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I'll be gone for about a week but that will give you time to scan or photograph things.

I did rough in some roofs today and it did not look bad for a test build.
:yep:

danasan
01-27-12, 04:09 AM
I hope you'll have a nice time in Louisiana. Enjoy yourself!

Here is an EXAMPLE ONLY (http://www.victor-immobilien.de/suche/bilder2/386630023.jpg) of the maps, could you work based on that? I am sure the one I will get breaks down to the single piece of ground ( as the one which is marked red in the example ) that we need on an US letter sheet 8.5 x 11 in... So, if we just say the building is 300 meters long, we would have 1 centimetre on the map that would be 10 meters in real life. It will have a scale to measure the lengths, of course.

Edit: Need some details :D for your HighDefVersion? It's the stairway only. To give an impression of the dimensions: The stairway is just 20 feet wide. (http://www.bbi-bergmann.de/marineschule-treppenbauwerk.html)

@ Rowi:

There was a very nice ship related to the Marineschule Mürwik. It was there as a ship to live on (Wohnschiff) and was moored at the Blücherbrücke. It had some historical appearances there... It was the Patria (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patria_%281938%29)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/79/Patria1.jpg

Any ideas? :D

Nice ship, danasan,

but I think, there is something wrong in the “Wikipedia article” you linked here. This ship should have an over all length of some 282 m, beam of some 22.5 m and a draft of 7.77 m. But only 16,600 GRT or some 20,000 ts?

On the other side – I think we could model it for SH3. I will look for further information about this ship.

Greetings

Hi Rowi, here is another source with the newer name:

Empire Welland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Empire_ships_%28U%E2%80%93Z%29#Empire_Well and) or this source: http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/EmpireU.html similar 17,780 GRT, but LüA is 182,20 meters: http://www.schiffe-maxim.de/patria_3.htm. (http://www.schiffe-maxim.de/patria_3.htm)

That's much better... Think of the relative wide, the ratio CWL : wide of the ship  (http://www.schiffe-maxim.de/patria_3.htm)

rowi58
01-27-12, 07:21 AM
Hi danasan,

yes, 182 m of length seems to be realistic. I think, 282 m length was a typing error.

BTW, i've asked or friends from UUW if they have better plans from that ship.

Most of the roof is greater then 45 degrees as you can really see here.

My pitch diagrams place it nearer to 56 - 60 degrees.

Regarding that Naval Academy again, the great advantage is, that it is still there, unchanged. So, if images are needed, floor plans and stuff, that shouldn't be the biggest problem. If sources have to be translated, no problem.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/thumb/7/74/Sonderbereichm%C3%BCrwik.png/597px-Sonderbereichm%C3%BCrwik.png (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonderbereich_M%C3%BCrwik)

Amazing... The stadium NW of Fruerlund, I used to play football there as a kid. Back then, I had no clue on what kind of historical grounds I actually live (lived in Engelsby, also noted South on the map). Also, I had the chance to see the Marineakademie from inside because the father of a friend was a Marinefotograf (Navy photographer) and took us there, showed us a nice museum and took us up to the belltower... Good `ol times!

Years later, while reading a book about the grey wolves, I found a picture of a crew standing in front of the stairs of the Naval Academy.
~Sixty years later, I was standing on the same spot, not knowing that this stuff would interest me so much later...

Sorry for OT and bathing in some childhood memories...

18 / 12 seems to fit fine :yep:

The angle the photo was taken from distorts the true angle of the roof edge.
I'm sure there's a fancy math formula that explains it.
Distance skewness maybe?
But you can test this by folding a piece of paper and changeing the angle you view it from.

I suspect the plans will give us nearer 20/12 or better.

I'd like to see those again.

Any news on the plans of the Marineschule Mürwik?
I'm going to be in Virgina for 2 weeks on a job come Monday but I'll have a little better access to the 'Net this time.
I won't have anything to do actual modeling but I could study things and plan the work needed.

I'll get a newer version of the 12pdr done before I go.
