I'd really appreciate some assistance with some photo's of HMS Victory if possible. Google's search isn't quite giving me what I'm looking for. Basically I need some shots of the fo'castle from the head showing the blue and yellow facing of the forward fo'castle bulkhead. Any shots from around the upper main and gun deck would be good as well.

Just post good sized shots here please.

Thanks in advance.:salute:

Only ever been to Portsmouth once Jim, and that was on the way to the Isle of Wight, many many years ago. It's about 150 miles as the crow flies from here. :03:

I could send you pictures of the box of the $350.00 HMS Victory model sitting on my "to do" shelf. I seem reluctant to start it.

Thanks gents and AJR. They are a good start. Any shots of the gratings on the main deck or the upper gun deck?

I'll PM Zirran and see if he can assist.

I have photos somewhere of HMS Victory. If I haven't got what you need I could always wander down to the dockyard with my camera and get some snaps and some film footage. Been meaning to have a proper look round.

I hope these can help. If not i'll be near the dockyards on thursday, but the weather is awful at the moment so might not be able to take any pictures.

I happened to pop down to Pompey the other week to have a look round and at the moment Victory is not looking her best! She's currently (or was when I was there) dismasted and with her paintwork, copper and outer hull stripped right down on the bows as they were checking for rot and I think replacing the timbers/masts, so if you want some up to date photos it may not be the best time to go.

I think I remember them saying shed be back to her previous glory by spring though if you can wait that long for your photos??

I don't mind waiting. I have made a start but its going to be a long road.

Hi Tarjak,

i'm not near Portsmouth, but i have been there several times. Since i am a wooden ships buff i bought all the stuff you could get on V., and there were two sets of b/w drawings (each size appx. 30x30 centimeters) showing all kinds of details. As well there are two giant plans showing the standing and running rigging of the ship.

I am sure this material is still available (onboard or via the museum), and dirt-cheap as well. So if anyone living there could spend this one pound or how much it may be now and send it to you ?
If i remember right the front wall of the V.`s foc'sle (behind the galion) is made of wood carved to look like roman looking arches (half circle at upper end), and the columns painted (or plated) golden. I remember asking to go there and look, but thy would not let me. At sea those quarters were the toilets ..
On very small models, the colour yellow will look much more convincing than gold.

(If you really want to do the rigging right (depends on scale of course), work from inside standing rigging first, and by all means use the correct diameters exactly - most models suffer of too thick rigging, and it really spoils the looks)

As well the navy of the time demanded models of the ships to be built, those so-called admiralty models can still be seen and visited. They were painstakingly-made miniatures of the later ships, the lower planking was not fitted to show the ribs' distances and the hull's resistance. Maybe you could gest some of those photos ..

I also have some books on ships of the line through the centuries, so if you need some info an some special detail just write -

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

I will look into this next time i'm at the dockyard and see what they have. I went there yesterday and sure enough she is being worked on. I think they said she would be back to normal sometime in April, which actually means they will probably be back to normal in August. That's British craftmanship for you lol. Anyway i'll wait till April to take some up close and personal photos for you TarJak. And in the mean time i'll find another suitable time to go to the dockyard and find the info Catfish is talking about.
