Hello to all the Sailors of the deep!
I am a veteran SH3 Grey Wolves MOD player and just updated today to SH5.
By reading around, I noticed there have been a lot of improvements and upgrades to modify the original game, since the interface is somehow tough to handle.
I already experienced some bugs (periscope depth and my character walking underwater on the external bridge :shifty:)
Could anyone suggest me the "mandatory" MODs to be installed in order to make it closer to the realistic Grey Wolves MOD of SH3?

I downloaded Sober's package, but it sounds like it's going to be overload for me. Coming from SH3, I'm used to running my own torpedos but like the idea of having the WO give an estimate of a solution of his own. Not the 'Gods eye view' that you get by default with SH3, but something to confirm that I'm not completely off.
It also sounds like choosing German voices is required for some of the mods to work. Is there a list somewhere of the ones that require that German be installed? I've got it installed now but understanding what they're saying is more important than immersion for me now.
I started a new campaign tonight and wound up hunting the Balkan sea. I presume I made an error when starting the campaign?

You can also use a mod that I made "TDC helper" - this mod will run in the background in automation and when you target a ship - hit the shortcut key and a window will pop up with a step by step guide on inputting the solution into the TDC - see here

Thanks for all the suggestions Trevally! I'd hoped to give them a try tonight but my little family had other ideas. Maybe tomorrow, one can always hope!

Okay, ran into something of an oddity today when going to start a game: the game intro video was not running full screen and would crash after the video. Tried checking options I thought I might have changed for TDW's UI, but it didn't have an effect. Uninstalled and am in the process of reinstalling. If someone's run into this before and can point me in the direction of a fix, that'd be helpful in case the uninstall/reinstall doesn't resolve the issue.

Thankfully I found a solution because an uninstall/reinstall did not resolve it. I had to uninstall the UBI Game Launcher and reinstall it. Once it patched, I was able to launch the game again and get full screen video and sound. :up:
sigh...unfortunately, doing so ate up all the time I had to play. :down:

I tried switching out some of the mods and got a little bit of gametime in, but still wound up getting a CTD in the middle of desperately trying to submerge my boat. I discovered I'd incorrectly applied the MMM multi-mod but when I correctly applied it I'd get CTDs loading.
The list above is my preferred setup...is there something wrong with the load order?

I have JSGME and several mods i downloaded from subsim i put the unzipped files into my mod folder that i made went on JSGME.exe saw such mods i downloaded i activated them and still seems like none of the mods work or are activated i dont know what went wrong please help asap

Before you activate the mods with jsgme (right click - explore) - make sure the subfolder for each mod has a data folder.
Also make sure your MODS folder is here C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS

I'm sure Trevally will sing out if I'm off base on this. I used the mod type as a guide for where it went in my mod list. Since you want to use a german language pack, I would put it in the place of CaptHelms Audio mod in my list. In fact, I believe I just replaced Stormy's DBSM with CaptHelms because I wanted to stay with English.

Hi all.
Been out of the Silent Hunter loop for a couple of years, and man, is it a chore
to get updated again. Couldnt find the DVD´s so just bought them from Steam. UBI drive.
Guess I have to do a looot of reading up.

Hi all i have not been on these great site for a while now.Still playing SH3 GWX and loving it.
But have brought SH5 and found that even though i can play it offline now, i need mods to make it feel right and play right, so back to subsim to get my fix.
What are the default mods i would need to get going, i have looked around the site and there are quiet a lot of them.
The problem is i am a mod freak so i keep adding!
I thank you again for the subsim site and i am happy its still up and running, UBIsoft should really fund this site only way to play the Silent Hunter games.

When using Jsgme is it ok to let the new mod overwrite everything that you already have active? If I follow other members mod lists it still does it and then the previous mod is greyed out. Is this ok or am I missing something?

Hi Holty and welcome to subsim and SH5:salute:
When one mod overwrites another - a file they both use is being changed.
If the first mods need info that the second mod removes - ctd can happen.
But - in the SH5 forum, most modders take this into account and we share files. So if my mod changes a file that Gaps mod has already changed, we will where possible start with the modded file. This file sharing in mods will allow both to work as all the info is still there.
It is then very important that the correct mod order is used. Members who post their mod lists have looked into this (most of them:03:) and thus it is safe to follow their lists - in fact it may be the only way to get some mod combos to work

All good so far with the mod list, I'm not running a lot of mods so I have not had any major drama's as yet.
My first patrol did not go too well, the patrol area was foggy so I could not see much at all. Was chasing radar contacts all over the map!Hopefully this was just bad luck and not a problem with a mod.
Just need to get used to SH5's little foibles and hopefully I can start to enjoy the game properly.

Trevally, I noticed that there are no more Type II U-boats in the campaign anymore. Is this to stop people having CTDs? If so, perhaps you could release an add-on mod that includes the type II, for people who didn't get CTDs in v.2.1?

Your list of mods include the New UIs 7.1 mod.... there is a 7.4.2 version .... should 7.4.2 be used? Also.... there is a Setup.exe referenced by The Darkwater ... can this be use with your list? In what order....

I finally realized u can install a mod and allow it to override if mods are placed in correct order! I have printed your lists with NewUI 78.4.2 . I am also going to go to the TEC tutorials and watch the one on proper installation of mods...
I have been reading a lot of posts on a lot of threads.... this group of moders are incredible.

A question regarding 7.4.2.... it u expand it it contains mny of the individual files you have in your lists after the main file... should I leave the subfiles in the main 7.4.2?

Hello and thank you Subsim community for all your hard work modding SH5. Frankly I'm a little/totally overwhelmed by the massive amount of mods and fixes available.
I've had a look at the first post and I've spent about three hours in total reading various links, but much to my embarrassment, I'm stumped as to compatibility of the fixes.

From the balanced mods list in the 1st post the order should be

So where in that order do the others go?

Anywhere in this case .. the trick is to watch if JSGME starts complaining about overwriting files from other mods. Generally, you want newer mods to overwrite older mods, but only if they are compatible, else you risk breaking the one you overwrite, and possibly introduce CTD's.
3 weeks ago, I was where you are now .. not having a clue and feeling kinda lost. Hang in there, it's volume, not complexity that's getting the better of you atm :p Just mess around and make sure you have that backup, if you use JSGME you almost cant go wrong with testing, except for maybe having to restart sh5.exe a few times :p

I am not sure where to post CTD issues and possible mod order fixes but don't want to post in the wrong forum so could someone please point me in the right direction?
You could either open op a new topic on the find, or see if it somehow relates to the silentotto CTD hunt topic, or post it in a relevant mod compilation topic.
I think best would be to start a new topic with as titel the important impacted mods .. or list .. or something. That way it can both me discussed and refferenced if needed.

Take a look at your MODS folder and see which applies:
1: folder structure is: <gamedir>\MODS\<modname>\data
2: folder structure is: <gamedir>\MODS\<modname>\<modname>\data
My guess would be 2 .. make it 1 :up:

I use the UHS mod along with a few TDW mods but with no UI mods. My boat is floating really low in the water while surfaced. What's wrong? I've tried to fix this for hours now :p

Does anyone know of any mods that improve the way enemy ships take damage? I loved the way in SH4 (TMO 2.0) that ships flooded and took extra damage from subsequent explosions and fires. There's something deeply satisfying from watching a ship break apart and sink after a well calculated firing solution comes to fruition. In SH5, it seems we have to just take down a ships HP and wait for it to slowly sink in one piece, without so much as a list or trim change.
I have found mods for more realistic damage for my u-boat, but I can't seem to find anything that fixes the way enemy ships are destroyed.

Thanks. I guess that makes sense. I had that enabled with an earlier setup, but I cut about 80% of my mod list because of problems i was having, trying to make it more compact. I will definitely be putting that one back in the list when I get back into port.

Here's my problem guys. Everytime I go to play, I don't have access to the TDC guy to tell him range, speed, anything. Furthermore, because I don't have access to him; I can't use the stadimeter. I also don't have any of the papers that you can pull down. The one's that convert distance and time to tell you the speed, and for some reason. I keep CTD'ing. Please help. Oh, I almost forgot, I left the manos scope out because I couldn't find the mod. Is that one of my problems?

I'm new to this forum and i would like to ask a few questions.
First of all i'm new to SH series since 3-4 weeks,I've tryed out SH3,4 and 5.
And the mechanics seems better in the earlier games but SH5 have better graphics and a more reality feeling imo. So i found out that mods can improve the game in SH5 and thats why im here.
The big question is,Wich mods should i get? I've seen there's alot of them and some big packs aswell,And since i'm kinda new to the game i don't wanna get used to the standard game. Also is it wise to start with a big pack or just one by one and try it out? Also i want the game to be as realistic as possible except Real navigation(I'm currently learning how to navigate)

The easiest way, IMO, is to go with either wolves of steel megamod, or wolves from the deep magui megamod. Both are an "one step" awesome multi-mods package.The difference is mostly on graphic layout ( look on youtube for the difference), but both will give you a real good immersion and realism. When you are ready, there's also a version of Wolves of steel with real nav.:salute:

Welcome. Concider Sobers mega mod too.(Lame old wolf Mod) I think thats the most used..(or am I wrong?). I have not tried the others so I can t tell difference. Use real nav from day 1. You can get deadreconing or celectial from crew with an errormargin. good luck..:salute:

Don't forget to patch to 1.2 first for stability and use it with JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler (JSGME) (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=171237)

I have a pretty low end system with no immediate plans to upgrade. I would like to get the most I can out of SH5 so would Trevally's "balanced Mod List" be the way to go?
I'm assuming that Sober's mega mod or Wolves of Steel would be a bit much but maybe I'm off base here.
Any suggestions on a realistic or "lite" mod list would be appreciated.
I may not be the only one with a limited system wanting to take advantage the great work these modders have done.

Trying to get back into SH5 these days as problems with saving games in SH3 but there's a few things I can't sort out.
1. can't for the life of me work out how to get the dials in the new UI's TDC 750 Dark Wraith
2. Crash dive starts about 20 seconds after i order it, (too late!) How can I change that?
3. Out on patrol when enemy sighted the game goes to x64; far too late especially in foggy weather when your suddenly dead!
4.Tried the sobers list but game screwed up and crashed too often so tried following order garnered from looking at a few mod soups. Seem OK?
Any easy to follow idiot proof tips or help very much appreciated.....

If you are using the default Enhanced UI then there should be a button on the attack scope station for selecting.
In TDW’s Options File Editor Viewer (OFEV) if you want to change the UZO dials then go to the OFEV TDC tab and select UZO TDC mode.

In the OFEV go to the Crash Dive Tab where you can set your own time.
Order is given (simulates crew clearing the topside deck) default is 20 (seconds)

I am no pro and no geek. I know modded SH4.
I begin now SH5. Wanted a good modlist to make most of it since the beginning of a cool campaign. I want the best environment for manual targeting, but Im not hardcore, want to retain some automatic abilities.
I have a Steam version and won›t use the TDW. TheDarkWraight has created cool stuff with others, always looking at realism and accuracy. However, some stuff of his conflicts with other cool mods.
It has been been a lot of googling, subsim-ing, and then JSGME try-and-error. Spent more time on this than on playing it.
It maybe missing great mods, or with not-the-best mods, I don't know.

I am completely new to Silent Hunter 5, and I am not very computer savy, as some of the younger players are. To start I would like to know what is the single best mod download; that is simple and safe for a beginner. I would like kind of a step by step instruction, at least for the very first one. I need how to open the downloaded file, and how to put it the proper Silent Hunter file. I would like to know things like how to get torpedos without having to return to port, and ect. Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Can I first ask if you who you installed SH5?
Steam download?
Other SH5 download?
Installed from a Dvd?
Tdw’s Generic File Patcher (GFP) as well as fixing many of the bugs in the game especially the torpedo patches also allows you to make changes so you can personalize your game.
Some sophisticated changes can also be made for the player who wants to play with more control of his boat.
Without the GFP you are likely to have some problems in your games.
Trevally’s Tutorial is a mod and does not have any link to the GFP.
As far as Real Navigation goes this is a mod.
There is one change that may or may not be essential in the GFP regarding text menus.
There are also additional changes that can be made in TDW's Options File Editor Viewer.

SH5, well modded, is a great experience, for new subsimmers of for old SH4'ers like me.
First of all, go check TheBerbster's thread, with everything you need to know. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211804
Now, when you have the steam version only, is it that bad? Not necessarily. It took me a lot of subsimming and goggling to find out what should be known to any new beginner.
You have 2 main options (besides purchasing a dvd or playing the stock version...):
1. 'De-steamize' your game. Follow this procedure and use the whole range of TDW’s GFP.
That's required if you want to go ultra-realistic and use as they are the big mods' compilations out there, with TDW v7.5.0. Real Navigation', and the DBSM full audio environment, and more stuff. LAST MINUTE: TheBerbster points out that it fixes many bugs and allows for significant improvement and customization - I sure don't challenge that, but I assume it's not essential for a relative rookie.

2. 'Have a good steam-compatible mod-list'. This one works, and gives me a relatively stable, highly advanced environment. I play full 'realistic' mode, while keeping external camera and map udpdates. With this modsoup, you have all the good graphics, interfaces, tools and charts improvements I could find.
Lots of try-and-error behind this. I don't pretend it to be perfect at all, just that it works, with only few CTD (when I mess with the mods/JSGME during patrol...). If you see redundancies, omissions or conflicts, please let me know.
Still, it brings SH5 to another level altogether. Have fun and thanks to SUBSIM and all the modders who do a truly amazing job.

Yes it does other things that can expand your game experience.
The ability for a steam user to have the ability to be able to use sirrawrsalot SH5.exe patch has to be taken advantage of.
Any files that are going to be changed can always be copied and pasted to a safe place beforehand.

- Re Trevally’s stuff, well copied, thx. I have added the attack/evasion scripts and it-s cool and working.
- Thanks for the various tips, re Shadow and ECCD mods, I'll clean my soup accordingly.
- I get from you that Tdw’s Generic File Patcher (GFP)
a) stabilizes and fixes many of the bugs in the game especially the torpedo patches,
b) allows to personalize the game (text menus, changes in TDW's Options File Editor Viewer)
c) provides for some sophisticated changes to achieve more control of the boat.
d) Real Navigation.
I assume these are very sharp tweaks, the 'nec plus ultra'. which a casual simmer like me does not absolutely need, at least for now :) - as long as it does not CTD too often, let me sink some ships now, I'm tired of working ON the game rather than IN it.

Hi JvM
The GFP has no influence regarding Real Navigation.
Real Navigation is a optional mod in TDW's NewUI for those that like more realistic game play and is enabled with JSGME.
As you are running 7-4-2 then there would not be any changes needed in the GFP anyway.
If you were running the current 7-5-0 version 18 then there is one change that would be needed to the .txt menu in the GFP
In TDW's OFEV there is a Real Navigation tab where you can make changes to suit your game play.
The OFEV is a stand alone application and is not affected by steam or anything else. Tutorial post #6
Unfortunately without the GFP you are not able to lower your silhouette by using Decks Awash.
It looks from your mod list that you are not using the SH5.exe patch for the GFP then version 7-4-2 is the one to use. Tutorial post #25
You are certainly using some strange mods including some I have never heard of before.
It will be interesting to hear how you get on with that lot.
This mod should not be used as it is used with the R.S.D. base mod and others.
Requires a New Career to use R.S.D.

I would suggest that you base your mod list on my tutorial post #35 as this will at least give you the correct order for some of your list.
This will give you a better chance of working the odd ball mods around the other mods.
When things go wrong you will have a better idea of where to look.
This is why I would also suggest that you have a look at the JSGME mod validator on my tutorial post #28.

Only 1 mod from each number.
You cannot use for example a and b.

Just a quick question abou tmodding. When i enable sometimes it already saus another MOD has changed that specific file. If i choose to still continue the previous mod turns a light grey whilst the new mod is dark. Which of the MODs is actually being used? and even though some of the files have been changed by the newly added mod will the rest of the 'greyed out' mod still be running?
I know thats a pretty bad question but cant think of how else to ask. Apart from, stacking MODS, which is the best way tro make sure they all run together?

Nothing wrong with your question.
When a mod overwrites another mod or a number of mods those files will not work in the overwritten mods (greyed out).

Not new to playing Sub Sims, but new to this whole Modding process! :up:
Im currently playing Silent Hunter 5, although im craving for a much larger imersive gameplay bringing the realism up quite a notch so am currently filtering through some MODs to help do this. Along with a load of new FX and graphics MOD's im really enjoying playing with some new AI mods making the destroyers attacks more 'hard hitting', also my other favs are the reworked sub damage and Real U boat damage (although ive yet to activate this one)
Any suggestions you guys might have to help enhance the game play from your expericnce thats worth trying?

I recently bought Silent Hunter 5 Gold Edition on Uplay and have since then been trying to install mods by using JSGME
I downloaded JSGME into SH5 folder and downloaded a number of mods and extracted them to a different file i.e. my documents.
I have run the exe for JSGME and imported the mods to JSGME and activated them but none are working in the game.
I have also downloaded the guide for JSGME and have noted the example file ptth is E/Games/SHIII/MODS .
My file path reads C/UBISOFT/SH5/JSGME/MODS which I think might be wrong.
Can anyone help me get the mods working?

Hi to all.
I have sorted my problem with JSGME and have activated a number of mods which appear to be working including open horizons ii.
The new campaigns appear but when I click on any of them the start game button does not work.
Any ideas what is wrong?

How do you know your mods are working if you say the start game button does not work?
Use my tutorial post #9 to post your mods list so we can see what mods you are using.
To play SH5 the first time you need to select "new career" from the main menu.
Choose a captains name or use the default.
Select your level of difficulty from the drop down box and start the game.
The game should then load the tutorial.

Hi these are my activated mods.I know open horizons is working because the new campaigns to play appear.Language pack is working as crew now speak German.Mighy fine crew is working because crew appearance has changed.

started from scratch with new version of SH5 patched it to 1.2.0.
Downloaded JSGME again after deleting previous download activated mods in prescribed order .Getting same problem that start game button does not work .
Tried loading a save game and got a .CTD.
Tried using continue campaign and got a CTD again although this has worked previously!
Followed your instructions to check on activation of mods JSGME mod validator not in specified location.
Despite all your help I am seriously beginning to give up on the idea of moding the game.I am running the game on windows 7 do not know if this is the issue!!

Are you using the main NewUIs_TDC_7_4_2 main mod. No comment was made by you, mel24, maybe that is why the start button was a problem.
Followed your instructions to check on activation of mods JSGME mod validator not in specified location.
Despite all your help I am seriously beginning to give up on the idea of moding the game.I am running the game on windows 7 do not know if this is the issue!!

The game plays fine in Windows 7. Have you checked out the errors thread for JSGME found in my signature link? Help any?

The tutorial Mod validator is for when the 7-4-2 base mod installed.
Try this download as it can be used for SH3-4-5.

Your mod list is the problem.
Use my tutorial post #23 to put mod list together or post #35.
The problem you have is that you are using bits and pieces.
Everything else sees to be ok , so do not give up.
Use my tutorials, they are there to help and stop problems happening.

By start game what do you mean?
You cannot "Load Game" from the Main Menu?
Start a "Autosave In Game"?
Have you started a "New Career"?
Use my tutorial post #9 to post your mod list.
Have you tried disabling all your mods.
Staring a "New Career" with a different name and seeing if the stock game will start?

You might also consider replacing this 5 year old mod.

You are using the wrong patch.
FX_Update_0_0_22__Stock_Torpedoes (modified for torpedoes failure patches)
Notice that it says Stock_Torpedoes.
You have TDW's NewUI so it cannot be Stock.
You used folder 5 but you need to replace this with folder 3.
Regarding Open Horizons check out my tutorial post #64.
All missions are date controlled.
You will not see the next mission until that date appears.

The Generic File Patcher (GFP) basically fixes the problems in SH5 and also adds a few game play functions as well.
My Tutorial Post #2 will show you how to install the GFP.
Post #3 will show you how to make changes and run the GFP as an administrator.
Post #56 will give you an illustrated basic + set up.
Post #41 will show you how to change the map colours.
Installing TDW's Options File Editor Viewer (OFEV) allows you to personalize many of the settings. Tutorial post #6.
For example making a change in both the GFP and in the OFEV adds a new icon that allows you to be able to go to Decks Awash. Tutorial Post #40

Where are you going to for depth under keel?
You can either use the icon, bottom left corner.
You can ask the Navigator by selecting the Depth Under Keel icon.

I cannot see anything in the the GFP that would cause your ctd.
I am using the GFP and have never had this problem.
The only problem that I am aware of is sometimes you get the pings and no verbal response.
Have you tested Depth Under Keel in a Historic Mission?
Do you get a ctd every time?.

I have tried getting depth under the keel by using both the icon and the navigator.Both caused a CTD.
Tried an historical mission and still got ctd.

Because we do not know where the problem is it is easier to use mep files.
By creating different mod lists you will not need to manually keep disabling and enabling mods.
My tutorial posts #124-125-139-140 are all mep file tutorials and will be of help.
Basically you need to do this.
In JSGME tasks you need to save a mod profile.
This will create a mep file. (Mep file 1)
Copy and paste it in a blank space.
Rename it (Mep file 2)
Go in to mep file 2
Delete the 3 mods.
Remove any empty lines/spaces.
Put the mouse curser at the end of the last mod.
Press the Del key.
This will make sure there is not a empty line under it.
Go to file.
Go to save.
Your curser should still be showing at the end of the last mod.
Exit.
In JSGME go to tasks and load mod profile.
This is mep file 2.
Your original mod list is secure in mep file 1.

Make a copy of Mep file 2.
Rename it Mep file 3.
Remove these 2 mods from mep file 3.

Do not leave empty lines or spaces.
Place the mouse curser at the end of the last mod
Go to file.
Go to save.
JSGME > Tasks > Load mod profile > Mep file 3
Start a new career in a different name.
Do not worry at this point about the bubbles on the crew heads, that can be sorted.
What are your computer specs?
It is worth installing this in you main SH5 folder.
Comes with full simple instructions.

CPU AMD Athlon II X2250 processor
4gb ram
Windows 7 Home Premium operating system
Haven't tried removing the steel viking interior mods yet.

A 2gb gpu is probably now the minimum requirement to run SH5.
There are some posts kicking around Subsim that can point you in the right direction to help reduce the gpu load.
It is interesting that you said you could run stock ok.
Stock = minimum load
Running with your mod list = game problem.
If you read the documents that come with this mod then I would suspect that these are heavy on resources.

You do not have the resources to run DynEnv mods with high resolutions.
High resolution mods should only be used with a top spec computer.
If you still want to retain these mods then change to low resolution and enable in numerical order.
Personally I would just run these 2 below in JSGME positions 2 and 3 and see how you get on.

DynEnv v2.9 - 2. Main Mod Low Resolution Patch < In 2nd folder

Sorry to bother you again but I have a problem.
When I load a saved game most times everything has been fine except occasionally the depth under keel request only produces a ping and no verbal or written report and also the verbal acknowledgement of course changes etc. does not occur.
If I exit and reload the same saved game the problem has been remedied in the past ,however recently this has not worked and the above problems persist.
Any ideas?

First I would suggest a dvd or other download rather than Steam as you will continue to have SH5 problems without TDW's GFP.

Put the zip file in the new folder.
Open the zip file and you will see the 28 mods.

Go to the copy tab.

Now just copy and paste the ones you want directly in to your mods folder.

New to SH5 and are not sure what mods to use:doh:
Here are some of the main mod types.
You must first ensure that you are updated to SH5 v1.2
The game version number is shown at the top right side of your screen when you are in the main menu.
Goto C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\Support\GameUpdater\GU.exe to force an update if the auto update did not work.
The next thing you should consider is your PC.
If you are using a 32bit operating system - adding mods can push your machine over its memory limits (http://174.123.69.202/~subsimc/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1775953&postcount=11) and cause CTD. You can take some steps to reduce this happening. This is done by following this guide to enable a 3gig switch that will allow your system to give itself more memory.

***Edit: - as it turns out, SH5.exe is alraedy set to use the full allocation of memory. As such, using the 4 gig patch will reverse this - so DO NOT USE in SH5. I will leave the link as it may be handy for other games 4gig switch info (http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php) ***
If your PC is good and you have a 64bit os - SH5 with mods should work fine.
How to install mods.
When installing mods for SH5 you should use JSGME. This is a small app that will make adding mods both easier and safer. Ensure you also read the guide to using JSGME or watch a vid tutorial here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1629507&postcount=26)

When to install mods.
Only install mods when you are off your boat. So when in the bunker save your game and exit. Install mods and then reload game and your saved game.
This is because most of the information is preloaded in you docs/sh5 as part of your save game and will be read by the game during the whole patrol. If some information changes when on patrol (by adjusting you mod list) ctds can happen.
Some mods can be installed when you are on your boat - read the mods installing instructions to see if this is the case.
Bug Fixes
AI & Human Historical Gun Fix (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=198510)
This fixes some of the issues found with the stock game with guns. It applies a general rebalance of armaments /ammo / zones and armour.

Torpedo Speed Fix (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=169477)
This fixes a bug when you give promotion points to your torpedo man. This makes your torps run faster. The bug is that your TDC does not know your torps are now running faster so does not offset to take this into account. Installing this fix will reset your torps to the original speed.
NOTE: you do not need this fix if you never give your torp man points or use any mods that remove your crews special abilities.

This bug causes a ctd when you listen to enemy subs in the hdro station.
NOTE: You do not need this fix if you use TDWs Ui mod or OHII.
SH5.exe patches to fix bugs and add functionality (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=181433)
This bug in the hydro reduces the bearing range that you hydro can pick up contacts. It means that there is only a very narrow bearing when you can hear ships. This fix increases the bearing range where you can hear contacts.
CO2 bug fix is for the schnorkel that you can use with TDWs UI mod. This stops CO2 increasing when schorkel is in use.
Dud torp fix will enable duds
Mag torp fix will allow the magnetic detonators to work (to the range specified in the torpedoes .sim file).
Fixes the resupply bug where you were only allowed to use once per patrol. Now you can resupply again if a tanker has the stores.
Automatic closing/opening of sub's internal compartment doors when battlestations ability (key F7)
Added a new patch - Crew wakeup - that 'wakes up' the crew and makes them do their job (contact spotting/reporting)
Independent engine controls
Contact reports wolfpack patch - where BtU may send a wolfpack to attack contacts that you report
NOTE: this fix will not work for steam users. The fix is applyed by running a patcher app to update your SH5.exe

In time you can than add to your balanced list with some of the other mods out there. You should only do this one mod at a time and then test for a good few days/weeks, ensuring there are no issues before adding any more - This will help in the long run.
