Hi there, can anybody tell me the name of the wave files who are used for the underwatersound(that is audible inside the Sub) of the Destroyers and Merchants. I am planning to tune up the SH.sdl, to make the sound more louder.... Thanks

do you mean 3D sounds or hydrophone ?

SDBSM take care for both types, have a ear on it...

...i mean the 3D sound you can hear from inside Sub, not the Hydrophone.

I agree, currently you do not hear surface ships inside boat when submerged until they are almost right on top of you.
Hearing surface ships in sub interior at range around 1000m would be more realistic to me.

the 3d screw sounds of ships, especially warships have a exchanged / extended sample and audible range in SDBSM, its tuned up to get some kind of "Das Boot" feeling.

i dont know if that behavior is realistic, but plz take in mind, that escorts and DD`s sometimes sneak over you (even while dropping charges then) using a very low speed and sound then.

And I disagree. Sound does carry better in water, but a searching destroyer was limited to about 12 knots, or water noise along the hull rendered them much less effective. Destroyers lost contact at a fairly close range, and accelerated to avoid damage to their own hulls just before the drop. I think it's unlikely you'd hear the escort until he was almost on top of you.

Of course I'll gladly retract that opinion if someone can cite anecdotal evidence of submariners hearing propellor noises at long range.

The book Silent Running:My Years on a WWII Submarine by James Calvert has a passage that details the sound of a destroyer running overhead and was discribed as "ear splitting". I assume if it was that loud running overhead at depth charge speed, one would hear at least something from out to 1000m. Gona read links Vendor posted, this topic interests me as well.

Hi,

I agree with Mobucks ! Each ww2 books about submarine I read, related these facts. Even, in some cases they described the sound like a "running train" over their head !

I read U977, The Grey Wolf, Atlantic damned, The UNBROKEN, SUBMARINE,... from German, English and American submarine commander.

So, I think it woukd be a great sound improvement !

Best regards,

Jean

well,

i would test it using SDBSM on a relative shallow dept first...

...if its still not scaring enough you could rise "Ship.Destroyer.Propeller"`s volume entry in SH.sdl from 94 to 100, the maximum range is set to 1000 meters atm.

and if even that is still not enough, there is also a little bit peak room in the wave file itself (Vapor destroyer propeller.wav) before it overmodulate then....

Hi Stormfly,

Thank you for the reply and for your help.

I did tests sometime ago, but the problem was that the ship sound was increased under and also over water. And it was unrealistic using ext cam.

I will do test again as soon as I can, because today we have a family at lunch...

best regards,

Jean

...yep, this ship screw sounds play also over water, that was one of the reasons i didnt make it to dynamic, but keeping in mind that most of us immersion hungry Kaleuns dont use the external cam to much or have it deactivated mostly.
