Bought SH3 off of steam a few days ago for a fiver, and with a few days off work played it none stop for 3 days while watching the extended version of Das Boot. Decided since i was enjoying it so much, I'd buy SH5 to give it a go.

Now I've looked at the auto targeting thread, but it just turned into a manual targeting discussion. What is this 3 numbered dots crap? Is their any mod that turns it back into the SH3 way of targeting. I never used manual targeting in SH3 as i'm not a fan of trigonometry, and more a fan of the thrill of the hunt, and playing cat and mouse games against destroyers.

Also, i'm surfaced, but none of my watch crew are on the bridge, and the uboat is filling with Co2, even though the hatch is open and i can walk around. What's going on?

It feels like they've picked some aspects of the game that need streamlining, then went and streamlined them too much.

Welcome to the forums!

Just save and reload to fix the CO2 bug.

As for the AutoTDC thing I believe you're stuck with the numbers thing. Just match up 3 with 3 for example.

Manual targeting doesn't really use a lot of trig, you can eyeball a bunch of it and there are built in devices, like the RAOBF, which you can find out all information about a ship with. Or just setup 90 degree attacks. :)

Ok, found a video with the lock then unlock method, works perfectly. But doesn't work anywhere near as well as SH3. Was much easier to plan larger volleys if you found a convoy, and the notebook would always tell you the speed, so you could leave them and circle around ahead of them out of visual range and know where they'd be when you need met them.

My watch crew are pretty hardcore, they don't even come inside for diving.

Try to avoid alt-tabbing and that won't happen. They can hold their breath for ages sometimes ;)

What you need is some mods.

NewUIs_TDC_6_8_0 by the darkwraith - Changes the UI to look like SH3/SH4 or the enhanced SH5

the 3 number dots you mention is disabled with this mod, can be enabled by clicking on one of the buttons inside the map will bring up a window where you have stuff you can enable.

One mod but I don't know which one but I'm sure its 'Open horizons II' or a mod implemented in OHII where you get the SH3 buttons - identify target, target solution etc. Ive never bothered to use the buttons tho as im too use to the auto targeting method which is this:

1. Aim at ship.
2. Press space bar to lock.
3. Press space bar to unlock.
4. Select turn tdc on (in xo box)
5. Press space to lock.
6. Click on ship type in xo box(tanker etc) this will showRM
7. press space bar to unlock.
8. Aim at any part of ship and fire.

Anyways this is my mods list to give you an idea.

Damn that's a lot of mods.

Currently trying to find the carrier after killing 5 AMC ships.

Do carriers launch aircraft to scout areas if they get intel?

I'm thinking i might attack a random merchant ship, and hang around in the area waiting for a plane to show up. Then follow it. Most of the time when i see them near the coast, the scent goes cold as i get out to sea.

Assuming you're using a stock campaign this post (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1417897&postcount=17) of mine explains where the AMC ships are and where you can find the carrier.

I'd already killed the AMCs thanks.

I was just looking at a way of luring out some of it's planes to track back to it, but I've managed to run into it. Got just into the middle of the destroyers, fired 4 torps at it then dove down to about 100m silently. They all went searching the area in the direction i shot from, but further behind me.

Give up m8 the game is S---
I have had it since it came out.
I have installed it and uninstalled it more time than i can remember.
Every time i install it after finding a new mod thinking it will be better.
only to find its the same crap game it was when i got it.
If you want to move up from SH3 take SH5 back to the shop.
And get SH4 with the u-boat add on:down::down::down::damn::damn::damn:

SH5 has a long learning curve and is not a game you can enjoy without some effort

Yes - I have seen some of your posts and everytime someone offers to help, you do not reply http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=188885

I'm enjoying the game.

I've noticed ships seem harder to sink, and the health bar is a bit lame.

I think it's easier to sink a ship if you hit it twice in the same spot. But i have seen videos of ships going down from one torp.

Can anyone confirm this?

you can untick the ship healthbar in game options and it will go away.
To do this - hit esc when you are in the bunker and select options.
Note: you must continue from the bunker for the changes to stick. If you load a save game stright away - you will lose the changes:up:

For sinking ships - yes - you can kill with one hit.
You should try TDWs FX mod. It enables better sinking (flood, fire and time):yep:

You can turn off the health bars in the Gameplay Options. Remember though, for the campaign you need to set the Gameplay Options IN BUNKER after starting. The stuff you set from the main menu doesn't apply to campaign games.

Usually spreading damage across the waterline of a ship is the most effective method of sinking on. Four little holes everywhere will be better than one big hold somewhere.

Some ships can be taken out with just one torpedo. Sometimes even one will hit and it looks like it won't sink, but it eventually will. For fast moving ships giving them a nice hole in the bow is good so that they end up plowing forward and drinking the sea in! :)

The reason I don't reply is because the game is crap
So I put 20 or 25 mods in to the game to try and make in playable
Then I try the single missions and it all looks nice and seems to work
But then I try a campaign and every time the game crashes
I am hoping that one day someone will make a super mod
That will work until that day comes I will be on SH4

Though it can be frustrating by times, the good things done with SH5 since it's release far outweigh the bad.
Cheers to all the great modders here

God damn, i can hit merchants easily, but really struggling at the moment to hit some destroyers, I'm using the lock unlock technique.

They always just skim the bow and travel past them. Even if i aim for the rear of the ship. Are they hearing the torp coming and slowing down?

You're a u-boat, your job is to sink tonnage to prevent supplies from reaching England or it's armies. You shouldn't be attacking destroyers, that's a job for the surface fleet. :)

Use your best weapon against destroyers: stealth. Not being seen by them while sinking merchants is worth far more than sinking any number of escorts. :arrgh!:

Nah just tried against some other merchant ships, same thing. There's something off with the lock unlock technique still.

Any mods to give SH3 targeting?

If you have been giving your torp man promotion points - this causes your torps to run faster. The faster torps are not taken into account with the auto target. This is why your torps are missing by running in front of the target.

You can fix this with a mod - there are two that will work here.
Sober's crew skills mod
or
Torp speed fix (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=165056) <<<link

Sorry - these are not the correct names - but may help with a search

I'm in the med now, and i'm running into the same trouble as this guy.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166051&page=2

If i destroy those dido and kent cruisers i keep seeing, will they stop appearing? I'm sitting waiting in the suggested area, and they just keep popping up in groups all the time. I think it's the same ones cruising around, but i don't know how the game handles it.

I've reloaded saves and had different weather instantly on load, and i've reloaded and went to areas where i've seen a certain ship and it's been completely different. So i'm thinking the game just randomly picks what you're going to see sometimes (and therefore won't matter if i sink those cruisers).

Ok i went back and started the atlantic part instead of in the med. I've managed to get all but 1 star in the total bar, so I'm basically set. However, whenever i try to leave Reykjavik (where i got my last 2 corvette kills) the game crashes. Should i just alter the save somehow to get me through?

edit - Argh, i've tried reattacking, and the same thing happens. It just doesn't want me to leave. I haven't tried leaving without attacking though. So not sure if it's some alertness bug.

edit2 - Yeah, i can leave as long as i don't shoot at anything.
