Hey there,

I came back to SH5 after two years. Actually I never played SH5, last I played was SH3, two years ago.

Downloaded a bunch of recommended mods and launched the game. Works fine.

Left kiel and killed myself. The keyboard shortcuts I'm used to don't work. I couldn't even find a way to pause the game to find my ways. What happened to [ and ] for hard left/right? I found a keyboard shortcut mod by Church's, which I'm downloading at the moment, but still don't have all the shortcuts I'm used to.

It was kinda funny actually. I pressed F3 thinking that I would be taken to the map view so I could plot my course, but... not quite. Pressed some other keys I was used to and I was then heading to a wall at full speed. In desperation, I found the automation button, and asked for Kiel outgoing waypoints, which made me avoid the wall but crash into another wall, probably cos I'm not supposed to move the uboat first and then use the automation. I had to quit the game and come back to subsim to try and find answers.

Back in SH3, we had a tool that allowed to manually change all the keys, a software called "Setkeys" if I remember correctly. This software still works with SH5? If not, do we have a new one compatible with SH5?

And what happened to the . (dot) key that would put you into outside camera following the uboat? All I can find now is a freecamera that doesn't follow the uboat.

Also, I'm using TDW's MO and UI, but I couldn't find anything on my screen telling me how many degrees the rudder is pointing p/s. Nothing is familiar, but I'm trying to adapt.

I'm old gang. Played SH3 for so many years, I was a pro. Now with SH5 I can't get out of the dock without killing half of the crew. Need some help and tips and links and mods from all of you old gangs like me who are already used to SH5.


EDIT:

Ok, I found a way to make SetKeys work with SH5, and fixed most of my problems. Still, the UI is like inverting your arms for your legs in your brain, takes a while to get used to.

I have the feeling that my first torpedo attack is going to be an utter comedy, since I didn't practice any kind of tutorial or single mission, straight from SH3 to SH5. Let's see what happens.

I figured out most of the stuff already, but there's one thing that is breaking my leg and I can't find the answer anywhere.

When I ask the WO to identify the target, I can't see the identified target anywhere, the book doesn't show anything and I can't see the name anywhere. What's going on?

And sometimes I can see the shadow of the ship when it's about to sink, but the whole shadow above the water level, upside down.

This is my mod list.

Again, I'm still facing a problem that I can't find the solution anywhere.

When I ask for the weapon officer to identify the target, nothing happens. I can see that the command is giving, he reports back "WO: Identify target" in the text panel, but nothing happens, nothing shows the target type/name, nothing shows on the recognition manual.

Am I missing something?

Click the small button up beside the clock to get extro options.
Click on the XO button
Through the WEPs Id target
Targed id will show in box
Move the box out of the way by pressing "L" key
You can then view the ship details in the SOAN (id book)

Shouldn't the NewUI be installed after IRAI and FX? I see it listed above IRAI on the screenshot Thomsen posted.

This mod (meaning IRAI) is fully compatible with my UIs mod. You have to install my UIs mod first then install IRAI and then the add-on mod for no hydrophone on surface if you want that. Say yes to all JSGME warnings.

He has said that he makes all his mods compatible with each other.
So when he updates one that has a shared file - the newext one should be on top.

Also, I was attacked by an airplane and I got flooding, but I didn't find any option of sending my crew to do the repairs. Boy this is so different from SH3. Also, all my officers went red, and my flooding went all the way to 100% in the engine room. But the game didn't end. After 16 hours, the flooding went back to 0% and the officers went back from red to normal. What does this all means?

I can't find a tutorial explaining all this. I'm watching "let's play silent hunter 5" on youtube, but so far I didn't find anything on this matter.

That order is the most recent suggested by TDW after the release of the last FX_Update, and is the one most people are recommending for that reason.

For the other problems, post a screen of the attack periscope view so we can have a look. To send your crew to repair, you need to talk to your Chief Engineer (in the control room). Crew will heal wounds over time, and there's probably a default repair level that is 'always on', with the order (and special ability where applicable) to send more men to damage control simply speeding things up. Being at Battle Stations improves repair time as well I believe.

One other thing I'm wondering about: where should the manos patch for my resolution go? Before or after NewUI? It's a part of Magnum opus mod but I guess it should overwrite New UI... :hmmm:

So far no answer from TDW, but I have another question.

The uboat you start the campaign with is the VIIB, isnt it?

I mean, I've clicked and opened all the logs and charts and etc I could find to discover what boat I'm using while in patrol (sh3 would give me the uboat number and type when in the crew management screen), but I didn't find any info on the uboat type, only the number, U-21. Searching the net I found U-21 to be a IIB type, and I'm pretty sure I'm not using a IIB in game.

Reason I'm asking is, I modified some files in the VIIB gr2 file and nothing happened in game. I checked twice to make sure I modified the right file, and yet in game I saw no difference.

Pretty sure my campaign started with a VIIA, flak gun down on the deck
behind the bridge. Only 11 torpedoes also. I'm usually very tired when I
play this, so thats what I think I saw. :hmmm:

Ok, finished my first patrol.

Got lucky, found a very juicy convoy on the western approaches and took down the destroyers and the biggest ships with torpedoes, and the rest with the deckgun. Precise shots below the water level are very effective in SH5, I found that 5 shots with the deckgun below waterline is enough to sink most merchants (HE shells) and shots in the engine/cargo compartment with the AP shell, with the merchant standing at 45 aob.

Used every shell and torpedo I had, went back to Kiel, got myself the trouble of going all the way inside the den, exactly the same place I left, park with stern first and all, clicked "Dock at Kiel", clicked "end patrol", and got back to the same place I was in the beginning of the patrol, walking in the bunker, being able to talk to a bunch of fellows. Neither of them finished my mission, so I just hit esc and choose exit to main menu.

Then I got this screen:

What am I missing? How can I finish the patrol?

The mission was a success, I needed 70k tons and I got over 200k.

I do NOT understand! :damn:

Says "Mission Failed - User exit".

I saved before I hit esc, just in case. Can anybody explain what I'm doing wrong? Where's my "captain's room", the place where I can check my boat, my crew, give and receive medals, distribute attribute and skill points for my men... where where?

and to add think you start with the VIIA sub...it kinda has the torp aft on the outside i belive


you reload and check your boat at the guy next to the captain that gives you the orders or the map where you can choose orders...cant remeber excactly since iam not playing stock sh5 iam running OHII

Were you on a mission for the Western Approaches? Because the first mission is generally the 50,000/70,000 on the Eastern side, so sinking ships on the west isn't going to count towards anything really.

Awards and stuff can be done at anytime now from the Crew Page. There's no Captain's Office anymore. You basically just hand out promotion points to increase abilities and give little Iron Cross awards (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1338264&postcount=8) that seem to do nothing. :)

Sorry, my bad, I said western, I meant eastern approaches.

The convoy I attacked was not in the mission patrol grid, but it was in the eastern side of England, between the patrol grid and Scapa Flow.

That probably should have counted. You'll need to sink one ship near the yellow patrol area to get credit for that, but the thing that sober posted should have filled up if you basically sunk them anywhere along the east coast there.

I've unfortunately not completed this first mission in my 7 campaign restarts since starting again last week, so can't remember exactly how to finish that mission. Maybe it's date locked? Like the next one can't start till X date so it won't let you finish the first one?

Got myself a nice small convoy, no escort, total around 40k tons, sank them all with the deckgun, send report to base afterward, but nothing shows in the progress of the mission? Is it cos it's out of the zone?

Saved and exited after sinking all the convoy, total of 8 ships, and the screen is showing over 20 ships and 180k tons? What the hell is going on in my game? That convoy was the first thing sighted in the whole patrol!

This is exactly what I see on occasion. Sometimes, if I move the camera closer the texture 'pops in', other times it doesn't - but nearly always with that ship. It's nothing to do with the in-game texture option as it's only this ship that does it, and my textures are on high. Afaik it's not possible to run the game without the launcher either, so I doubt that's it, and I get it while running via the launcher.

I think it's the AOTD/MadMax Passenger (which is also the same as the Hospital ship, I think). I've posted about it before.

Is it included in MO? And hence not compatible with the campaign layers on OHII? I don't know it's ID in the Sea folder so I don't know for sure if it's a stock boat or a modded one. Just throwing out guesses but something's causing the texture to go wonky.

I'd love to find out why, it annoys the hell out of me!

Yes - this is why your campaign is not working.
You must load through the launcher for the campaign files to update.

One note:
Antilag is not to be apply via jsgme.
Just copy the two uziped files from the Antilag (.dll + .cfg) into your game folder:salute:

That's all JSGME does anyway, so might as well use JSGME to keep your install clean. :)

Ok, on the third patrol I assaulted the port of... forgot the name now.... its the first port in the huge bay south of scapa flow. Got nice tonnage and complete the first objective.

Now I got the orders to infiltrate scapa. Seems like it's working. :rock:

One thing weird happened on my last patrol. I surfaced and started heading back home and I got a warning about CO2 too high. I checked the hatch and it was open. I opened and closed both hatches again, nothing.

I rushed back home ahead flank and managed to get there with 78% CO2, crew almost dying.

Is this a bug of some sort? How does one fix or prevent this?

Yup, another common bug. I'm pretty sure a simple save/reload fixes it. I got caught with the "attached destroyer" bug last night. So annoying having a "closest visual contact" at 14,900m and shadowing your every move but not attacking.

Patrol #4, so far no CTD.

Went into Scapa Flow to do the mission "breaking the fortress", sank both the Renown and the Hood.

Was leaving Scapa, CTD when close to base.

Had a save when I was about to leave Scapa, reloaded and got back to base. Was offered a new sub, accepted. Modified the new sub with conning tower and camouflage. Accepted new mission and click to start, CTD the exact second the loading finished.

Reloaded the "auto_save in base", re-modified the sub, re-took the new mission, click start, CTD, same situation.

Reloaded the "auto_save in base", didn't modify the sub, started the mission, CTD again.

Reloaded another 3 times, CTD in the exact same place (as soon as it finished loading into the sub after I clicked start mission), all 3 trying different things, modifying the sub or not.

Reloaded the save when leaving Scapa Flow from the previous mission, and saved again just before docking in base (Wilhemshaven) so I could load and test closer to base. Accepted the new sub, new mission, CTD again the same place.

Reloaded and tried not accepting the new sub, CTD again.

Tried to reload and CTD half a second after the 3D image rendered (in the sub).

Tried to reload another 10 times, same thing. One of the times it actually loaded and didn't CTD. Went to base and accepted a new sub and tried to start again, CTD.

Loaded a save from 2 days ago, before I went to Scapa Flow. Loaded fine. Went there, entered, lined up a shot on Renown, the torpedo hit, a catastrophic explosions starts and half a second after the torpedo hit CTD.

It never CTD before and now I can't play a bloody single mission and everything I try doesnt work and it's not even crashing at the same place, it's all random.

Start new campaign?

regarding the ship textures, the devs had allready problems fitting all the textures into it, so on some systems, with some mods (mods using higher texture resolutions) it could lead to problems.

By the time priod as i did some first test versions of textures for the new passenger liner, i recommended using lower dxt5 texture resolutions for the new ship package, having more mem for the game, iam not shure if this idea made it in the package.
