Hi all, I am currently working on my first mod, the HMS Tally Ho. She's only just gotten started, so this might take a while...

Excellent

Will this be a playable or an AI? What polycount is your target?

U570
09-29-11, 11:52 PM
I will try to make it playable, that is my goal, and my maximum polycount is around 20,000 exterior, and will work from there.

Nice start Mate.
:yep:

Just try to keep some sections detached or you'll end up with alot of work when you go to import.

Really clean model mate, you have certainly a good eye for this

What program are you using, is that 3DSMax?

U570
10-01-11, 07:32 PM
Its Gmax, the free version. And thanks for the great feedback :salute:

Madox58
10-01-11, 07:33 PM
Remember that you must change it to triangles to import with S3D.
So your count is going to double as all quads will split into 2 tris.

And in case you wonder?
I'm just some old Guy that spends WAY to much time messing with a silly Game.
The wife says that to me every day!
:har:

U570

the polycounter already counts it in triangles, I found that out when checking, and I had the blueprints in. each plane took up 2 poly.

I am also reworking the hull so it is one piece, and better detailed

and the total polys are up to 7780

This is looking really good. I've been trying to get started modelling, and have been trying to learn Wings3D, without much luck. Based on what you're doing I've downloaded GMax and taken a first look at it. It looks pretty cool.

Would anyone know what how to write the .sim .cam .dat .dsd .sns .val .eqp and .von files. I know how to open them, and save a file as one, but I don't know what is actually in them

Your best bet would be to use the S3D Editor. It's an amazing tool that allows you to view (and edit) many of the key in-game files. Full details can be found in the thread here:

Hope it helps and keep up the good work! :sunny:

Hi all, sorry for the delay, but I was searching for the camouflage to make textures, when I stumbled on this:
http://support.caswellplating.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/List/Index/40/submarine-plans

So seeing as this has more detail, I shall be re-modeling the entire thing. And to top it off, as some of you know, I have joined the U-Boot_HAHD 3d modeling team, so that will slow progress slightly.

================================================== ======================================
Edit: does anyone know how to convert .pdf's to .jpg?

U570
10-15-11, 02:00 AM
I've tried to put the new blueprints on in Gmax, use them as textures to go off on planes, anyway, they turn out like this.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=551&pictureid=5013
and they should look like this
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=551&pictureid=5014
This happens to any bitmap, jpeg or just about any picture file I try. Does anyone know what is going on?

You are in luck, i've had this problem with 3ds Max.

Click Customize at the top of your screen, then preferences, viewports, configure driver, and then tick "match bitmap size as closely as possible".

That should solve your problem.

Every time I read a thread like this I realize just how little I know...

And how grateful I am for the people that do know.:salute:

Very interesting as a laymen to see how it comes together.

Here's a link that should help you setup blueprints for GMax.
It's for 3Ds Max but it's the same deal.

http://www.the-blueprints.com/tutorials/3dmax/

For Max users? There is a Blueprints Manager script that is killer.

I tried that, and everything in the link privateer put up, and nothing has changed :damn::damn::damn:

Related/Unrelated question...

I downloaded Gmax to do some quick modding work in preparation for HAHD (I'm tired of the inaccurate type II interior) and I was wondering if you (or Hans) could point me to a good way to import/export .obj files (especially with regards to painting parts and getting a nice image to import into S3D or whatever)

I'm mostly working on this to kitbash FM/DD "open conning hatch" mod to have operable peris (I am going to import the obs scope for the attack scope IAW vessikko pics), and the conning tower is the wrong shape and size for a type 2.

(post-thought, should I have opened my own thread for this?)

postalbyke, There are scripts for this that you can download, http://www.katsbits.com/tutorials/gmax/exporting-meshes-as-obj-models.php and just download the gmax-obj.zip, that is the one I'm using

*awesome*
Thanks, U570, I'll look at that now!

Reaper, I had seriously considered attempting to join the team just for those tutorials, but I'm seriously bad at finishing projects, which wouldn't help the effort at all :(

Also: U570, your work is a serious inspiration, bro! Keep up the good work both on your mod and the HAHD team!

U570
10-26-11, 12:10 AM
thanks postalbyke, I am looking forward to see what you could make, I assure you, with enough positive feedback from everyone at Subsim, you will be able to finish a project.

Also: the computer with the decent version (doesn't have the blurry blueprints) gmax crashed, so work will be slightly slowed :damn::down::damn:

Wicked bummer, yo! I hope that gets sorted out in a jif!
I was doing my 3d work in Sketchup, but it doesn't have any uvw that I can tell... maybe I should research that... :hmmm:
It does make slightly sloppy textures, but apart from that, I was doing simple modeling in that before I decided to undertake SH3 modding lol
Aaaand I just found a UVmapper for Sketchup. Guess I'll be busy again on the other computer (no internet, but much better graphics card...)
I'll tell you how I feel about the sketchup tool, I'm hoping that I can make it work :P
