Hey all,
Silly question (I feel like such a n00b), and one I know I asked way back when SH5 was just released, but cant find the answer in a search.
How in the heck do I aim my torpedos? I guess its way different than SH3 and 4 (using arcade mode...I dont have the guts to turn on manual).
I just shot 4 torps at 2 ships (from 900m range), and all torps went BEHIND the ships (really ticked me off is early in the campaign when tonnage is hard to find...these were two juicy tankers). I didnt use any of the special Torpedo man features (heard they were bugged)..but I did set the torpedo speed to fast.
Thanks in advance... oh and mods I am using

For the 'Arcade mode' as it were, open the TAI options in game and set 'round numbers on torpedo track' (or words to that effect). Then when you lock a target, just line up the matching numbers on the TAI by moving the periscope and fire when they match.
You can also lock a target, aim the periscope where you want the torps to hit, then unlock and fire straightaway - for some reason this auto-plots the torps, and it's possible to hit from several thousand metres with that trick.
If you want to give manual a try (with New UIs with TDC you can just switch to manual regardless of your difficulty setting), my rough written guide to AOB, Speed & Stadimeter is here:

Hummm...thats pretty much what I did.
I locked the target, set torps to fast with 4m depth (setting torps to FAST is probably what messed things up and caused them to miss), and hit fire. All torps went behind the ship.
So am I right in thinking it was resetting the speed that caused them to miss?

click on my sig for a link to "Trevally Tutorials"
They will run in game through TDWs Ui
They will take you through the steps in real time as you play:up:
oh - that reminds me - I need to update for OHIIv1.3:D

Changing the speed will change the positions of the numbers, so if you match up for slow and set them to fast just before firing it will go astray, especially at range. This should be fairly obvious though, you'll see the numbers on the track move in the TAI when you change the speed so it'd be hard to miss. If you're selecting spread fire, make sure you don't set the spread angle too wide and zoom right in on the TAI to check both will hit.
It's no good just firing when the triangle icon goes green, those shots are always way off. You need to line the numbers up on the track. Alternatively the torps could have been spotted and successfully evaded - it does happen. Take your shots from 1000m or less to reduce the enemy's chance of evasion, and have your torp doors already open or the delay can put you off track as well.
Or just lock, aim at the middle of the ship, unlock and fire. Crazy, but it works. :D

Hummm :hmmm: I did set the torp speed before locking on target, had torp doors open, was 676m from tgt, at 90deg to target. Then (like in SH3 with Manual targeting not being checked) I unlocked aimed one torp at the bow , and one at middle (under superstructure)...and all torps happily went scooting 10m or so aft of the ship
I will have to load the tutorial and practice. Maybe using TDWs UI (even though I have the MANUAL TARGETING unchecked) is a bit different?

Open the torp doors before firing, see how you get on then I would recommend Trevally's torp tutorials to give you the confidence to try manual targeting. If you try manual targeting you will at least appreciate what all the TDC dials are doing in the TDW UI mod then even if you go back to automatic.

I would use manual but I usually only have an hour or so to play...
But one of these days I will try it... after all the work TDW put into getting the TDC dials to work, I at least owe him that much :yeah:
Which btw...found out what I was doing wrong. I was locking the ships up, THEN switching the torp speeds and firing. So now that I know to set speeds first, lock and unlock target..then aim where I want the torps to go, I think Im good!
Thanks for your suggestions everyone...this great community is why I keep coming back!!

I think for this to work you have to have manual targeting enabled in options. Sounds weird I know.

No you don't. I have manual targeting disabled in options. This is coming from an experience arcady targeting pro :DL I never wrote that someone on here did I can't remeber who but before I found out about it I was just like Faamecanic missing ships, then I tried the above method and never looked back. Arcady targeting FTW! :arrgh!:

LOL....thanks Kiwi...
The other probelm I had was no numbers... didnt know it was a setting in TDW UIs that I had to turn on.
Its all good now... sank 32,000 tons on my first patrol :) Had to return to port early (with 48% hull and 4 wounded officers) due to surfacing in the middle of a convoy, and I guess with OHII mod some merchant ships are ARMED in 1939 :o Needless to say I will be much more cautious in the future about surfacing. :haha:

by default they are disabled. You can click on the map options button on each map (TAI and nav map) to enable/disable options. To make the changes permanent you'll need to edit the options file.

I can't even remember everything I've put into the mod :88). I've been coding and testing the GUI for the options file and I look at some of the options and say to myself, "hmmm..I don't remember that" :dead:

:rotfl2: Sorry to go completely off topic, but I've had similar experiences with my music. Sometimes I'll listen to an older recording and say "Was that me? Did I play that?" Sometimes it's actually pretty good. :sunny:
