View Full Version : Realistic Damage for stock SH3

Hi, I'm currently running the stock version of SH3 and I was wondering if the was a mod for it that made the ship damage more realistic, such as showing a gaping hole in the side of a merchant ship after a torpedo hit instead of a darkened area where the torpedo hit. Any help with this will be much appreciated.

Also affects shell holes.

Actually I lied. Those last two aren't from shells. They're from the torpedo fragments ripping up through the opposite side of the ship. Probably from this mod:

Also, you really need one of the supermods and SH3 Commander. The game has gone so far beyond stock you have no idea what you're missing.

thank ye kind sir, I have been meaning to get GWX3 but would that mean I'd have to remove my current mods and then reinstall them after installing GWX3? I don't use the generic Mod enabler as I couldn't seem to figure out how to use it with the steam version of silent hunter 3.

The SH4 Effects For SH3 mod is tailored for GWX, but the Torpedo Damage Final mod works with stock. On the other hand any supermod is better by far than the stock game, which basically stinks to high heaven.

I don't know about Steam partly because I like having the box on my shelf and partly because Steam refused to sell to me. But that's my problem, not yours.

To compliment Steve's photos above, here are the TGA's...you'll see the bullet damage is identical but the explosion holes differ between both versions:

On version two why is there an orge out line on some of the hole?

When you see it in-game it looks like the interior is burning.

I must admit to preferring version 1.

I can't seem to get GWX3 to work, it loads and gets to the main menu but when I try to play a mission or look at the museum it loads to about 95% then it freezes/crashes.

Hard to tell what crashes your game, since you do not use the Mod-Enabler to show the load orders.

You sure you installed ti properly? Most of the game-relevant data, like campaign, ships and so on load after the the main screen.

On a side-note:
AFAIK the enabler has an ini file, where you can enter your custom install-path. SO you should be able to use it with the steam version too!"
I'm not at home so I can't double-check. Somebody please confirm.

actually I had the mod enabler that came with the GWX3 install but none the less I have reverted to the stock SH3 as the time spent fiddling with super mods could be better spent sinking allied ships.

Were you already playing the game before installing GWX? It must be installed over a clean, unmodded, unplayed copy of the game.

ahh but still right now I don't want to fuss with it now as this is the fourth time I have reinstalled the darn game.

Nothing wrong with that. I was just pointing out the possible reason for your problems. In six years I have probably reinstalled the game more than a hundred times. Sinking ships? I've done that so much it has lost its luster. I like playing with the game as much as I like playing it, and without a decent supermod the harbors are naked, and these days I need the Canal and harbor locks with gates, or it just doesn't feel right.

Also have to have Commander for Ship Names if nothing else. But that's just me. :sunny:

You've possibly got a file or two left over in your registry that the game is calling upon but then sees two.

Your best chance of a resolution may well be to uninstall the game (preferably using the disc option) then delete the SH3 folder in C\MyDocs, then perform a registry clean.

There is a free trial version of the one I use here:
