I use Photoshop with some nVidia plugins. But I think there's a plugin for Gimp too, the latter being free.

I think Gimp would be the best choice. It's free and relatively close to its costly "counterpart" photoshop. Don't know if it can natively edit .dds files, but there's certainly a way.

If you can get your hands on photoshop, it's even better as it's been the undisputed king of photo editing softwares for ages. It doesn't deals with dds out of the box, but nVidia has a free dds plugin (and also a free one to produce normal mappings) for photoshop on their devs website.

Personally, I used photoshop for quite some time now.

DXTbmp

no need for plugins, opens any dds and you can send it to the editor of your choice. Its the easiest solution. Even previews/enables editing of the alpha. IMO everyone should use it. google DXTbmp

I use photoshop from back when I could afford it many years ago, but I have used DXTbmp once and it did the job well - certainly easier than trying to figure out Gimp - you just have to make sure what .DDS setting you need to use (I did with DCS's A-10C, don't know if SH5's .DDS files need the same care?).

Whatever you choose to use, good luck :yeah:
