Hello to all,

3 and 4 are much prettier, and look more like modern maps. I voted for 1 and 2, however, because they look more like German period maps I've seen.

i got the 'picture' of what most of you like !

soon , i will show you the final map colors . with a new FANTASTIC tool that TDW created i managed to create the colors that fit to mine and your tastes for the map . it will take some time becuase each color (256 total) must be seperately adjusted via their hex values but it will be done ! (thats why i showed you only two very 'lightly' tweaked versions...just to 'catch' your tastes) .for this reason it will be only one version and i just hope to be the same in-game as i see it through TDW's tool

@Firewall : take a closer look ...all four colors sets are different
@Herr-Berbunch : the texts can be at german or english at whatever version.it is in a seperate file than map colors

If you double click the values under red, green, or blue you can adjust the value (possible values of 0-255). Gradient and map will be updated to show change. Here you can see I adjusted the Red value for Index 4 to 255. Notice the current gradient and map.

You can pan map with mouse.
Zoom/unzoom with keyboard (going to change to mousewheel)

Have to add/code in ability to save changes
You'll have the ability to save as a different file so you can scroll through different gradients and see what they look like without having to enter the game.

Works with SH5 also (originally made for SH5 but I ported it over so it can be used with SH3)

yes it will save changes directly to terrain.act file for SH3 :up: You'll be able to create 'gradient' files for SH3 by creating multiple terrain.act files (terrain1.act, terrain2.act, terrain3.act, etc. and then you can cycle through these by pressing G. These files will be located in the folder where the app is located)

If by water depth you mean the colors used for the water on the map then yes. If you are referring to the color of the water when you use external cam then no.

makman94 has a test version of the app. It's not complete yet but it's close (few little logic errors to correct and have to code in the saving of the gradients). Works with SH5 or SH3 :up:

the tool is not ready for sh3 but also is not released yet .

I have revised that app to also work with SH3. It's not complete yet but should be soon. makman94 found some issues I need to fix and I also need to let SH3 read .bmp files for the gradients (currently it reads .act files) :up:

There are no more different .act files. Everything is done using either tgas or SH3's .act file.

Very baffling to me as I have no problems on Win 7 64bit. When asked I can use SH3 or SH5 and I can use the gradients or the .act file :hmmm:

Maybe there's an entry of an older SH3 installation in registry?

Look for this hive key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter III
InstalledPath...... REG_SZ -> ????
Path ................ REG_SZ -> ????

???? = entries of an old installation ?


Did you move or copy the SH3 installation folder to a different path?

I'm reading the registry to get this info. What does your registry key say the install path is? I'm looking for this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter III

could also be:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft\Si lent Hunter III

and I'm looking for the value of InstalledPath

okay this finally tells me something.
you see the 'map: creating gradients' which is good. The next entry should be 'Gradient: creating gradient'. This entry is the first thing the class's constructor does but since it doesn't show up then during class initialization it's failing (variable initialization) :hmmm:
What version of DirectX do you have installed on your computer? What OS are you using?

this will give me info on the exception being raised when it tries to create the gradients

Gotta love these problems that only some people experience :shifty: Nature of the beast I guess :-?

Does this app work for anyone here in SH3? I know it works for me but that does me no good.

Does this app work for anyone here in SH3? I know it works for me but that does me no good.

...I would like to test when anybody answered me my question from post #23 here...:hmmm:

I don´t know furthermore the sense behind this tool, sorry ! :oops:

For what is it ? What can I do with this tool ? How I see this tool work when I start the game ?

Sorry folks, but what are "gradients" ? :hmmm:

You know the map that shown in game? This lets you change the colors of it. Plain and simple. SH5 uses a .tga file that specifies the gradient (a list of colors in a line) for the map. SH3 uses an .act file to specify them. This will let you make custom gradients and see what they look like before applying them to the SH3 .act file.

I'm really miffed about this ATM :hmmm:

I have 0 problems with the app and I can't figure out why some others are having problems when it comes time to make the gradients. It has something to do with DirectX I do know that but just can't quite pinpoint what....:shifty:

alrighty then it's time to swap hard drives on my computer and fire up XP 32 bit and see what happens :shifty:

Problem was a threading issue :shifty:

I got this to load on my laptop (XP 32 bit) so it should work now

You need .NET framework 3.5 intalled (found this out by trying to run on my Windows 98 computer)

Tried it on a VM for now with WinXP Pro SP3 [32bit], latest DirectX 9.0c [June 2010] and .NET FW 3.5 SP1 installed.

It's working so far but huge parts of the window are out of screen range [17", 4:3, 1024x768] basically the lower part, also at left and right side. Is there a way to downsize the window?

When minimizing the window I get the following error:

your last version (.11) is working for me too BUT :

1. huge parts of the window are out of screen range . i am also have set the monitor to 1024x768 and almost all the lower part (with the adjusters) is out of screen range . i changed my screen resolution to maximum set (1680x1050) and still not all of it were vissible

2. still unable to change gradients or Terrain.act files (by pressing 'g' or 0-9).
editing ,updating map and saving is working perfect.
still can't find the fuction that app is 'reading' from gradient but saving to terrain.act

Hi Mate I vote for 4 :up:

How about trying to make a black and white version to make it look more like the authentic Kreigsmarine maps :hmmm:
It might need remaking of the maps to get rid of the land gradients so they appear all white but this is possible.
If I get a chance I'll try altering the Map level 1 to see what it looks like :salute:

I'm working on the ability to resize it currently :up:

You won't be able to change terrain.act files. It now works with only the game .act file or the tgas. So you load up the game .act file and then save it as a tga (when saving in SH3 it will ask if you want to save as game .act or tga). Edit it in Photoshop (or use the app's editor to make changes to the gradients) then copy modified tga to app's folder. Fire up app and then press G to cycle through gradients till your edited one is visible in Selected gradients. Press save button in selected gradients and select save as .act file to apply to game.

You know the map that shown in game? This lets you change the colors of it. Plain and simple. SH5 uses a .tga file that specifies the gradient (a list of colors in a line) for the map. SH3 uses an .act file to specify them. This will let you make custom gradients and see what they look like before applying them to the SH3 .act file.

Window width -> OK
Window hight -> still a little bit too large [lower edge covered by task bar]

Minimizing and resizing don't work properly:

resized it so it will fit in 1024 X 768 screen :up:

These errors when minimizing and all are puzzling. Once again I don't experience these problems but I did some more checking before DirectX tries to render the map to ensure there are no errors in v0.0.13

Problem is I can't make it any smaller than 1024 X 768. If I do then I can't display the data.

Now the minimizing error just baffles me. I can't get it to reproduce and thus can't trap it to see why it happens. It doesn't happen to me - I can minimize, maximize, resize all day long without error :hmmm:

still i have the same issue with SquareSteelBar (an error when attempt to minimaze it) but i haven't notice any side effect by this exept that it is generating the map again from the start (when you caome back to the app)

Hi Mate I vote for 4 :up:

How about trying to make a black and white version to make it look more like the authentic Kreigsmarine maps :hmmm:
It might need remaking of the maps to get rid of the land gradients so they appear all white but this is possible.
If I get a chance I'll try altering the Map level 1 to see what it looks like :salute:

yea sure Reaper ! no problem to make one version with the historical colors of kriegsmarine maps . can you post an original map to get an idea of its colors ? (googling shows many different results).

don't worry about the land gradient . if you make it all the same color it will appear with no gradient at all so ,i think, there is no need to edit the map level 1

So let me see...you minimize the app and when you restore it you see a box in the middle saying 'Generatig map' right? If so, this is normal and expected (because the DirectX device was 'lost' and everything has to be re-initialized). Is this the error you speak of or something else?

I will make a change so you can save the terrain.act file to another location :up:

There is this crazy guy on the site that has a Damage Caused by Fires mod and a DC Water Disturbance mod. I use them! They are great. Let me know how to use the app when it is ready.

I like map pic no. 2, becuase it looks just like the view I had of the middle east from a jet airliner when I flew to Saudi Arabia years ago.

If you are saving as .act file you have the option to choose folder to save to
If you are saving as .tga file you can choose folder and filename to save to

Everything should be 100% functional now :yeah: Barring no bug reports I'll make an official release in a couple of days.

Yes TDW, I was talking for the error that appeared when you tried to minimize the app (the same that SquareSteelBar described to you ) but i see that this is allready solved at your 0.14 version :up:
also, thank you very much for the addition to save the terrain.act wherever user want ! thats it !:up:
something else that i notice (very tiny !) is that if user tries to adjust the values at RGB adjusters of your app(via num numbers) ....the side effect is that app is changing also the gradients.tga at the 'selected' area becuase both ('adjusters' and 'selected area') are using the num numbers. better to allow user changing the gradients.tga only via the 'g' button .

with version 0.15 i get exactly the same error message like the SquareSteelBar (version 0.14 also works perfect for me).

I didn't get the 'problem' to reproduce until I entered an invalid value. Fixing now :up:

Going to add something also:
at app start it asks if you want to use the game file or not. If you opt not to I'm going to have it ask you if you want to specify a gradient to use (select one from a GUI) or let it use the default gradient (current behavior)

when I click on a recently saved gradientx.tga [not .act file !] windows explorer crashes immediately. It's impossible to get access to that file and I've to delete it via cmd.exe... but explorer doesn't work properly anymore.
I've to reboot...

You open explorer to view files and you navigate to where you recently saved the gradientx.tga file. You double click it via mouse thus asking explorer to open it up using the default program associated with tga files correct? And when doing so it crashes? It's quite possible this can happen with some image editors because the tga is a very strange size and bit depth (width 256, height 1, bit depth of 24bpp). Try right clicking the file and selecting open with and using another image editor (I use photoshop and it has no problems with the saved tgas).

Nothing to do with associated prog.
When single clicking [right or left] the file WE immediately crashes.

After I saved gradient.tga to a different folder the crashes also happen with the .tga files inside SHMapViewer_0_0_18_by_TheDarkWraith folder although they haven't been changed [checksum].
Since WE doesn't work properly after the crash [freeze] I'm forced to reboot the system.

That all seems to me like parts of WE are kicked out of memory whilst saving the tga...

I can open the file with Photoshop and can use Explorer to open it up (double clicking it - Win7 Ultimate 64bit). I can also open it up with the app with no problems :hmmm:

After system reboot I can open the file by double clicking with the associated prog but when I try to 'Open with' by right clicking WE crashes again.

But the loop way is working: 1. starting e.g. Photoshop, 2. menu bar 'File' 3. 'Open' and loading the file - no prob.

But right click in WE let it crash [maybe 'crash' is the wrong term -> WE window is closed], so I open WE again but now any access is impossible, WE window is immediately closed, open it again now WE freezes and I'm forced to reboot [relogin doesn't eliminate the error, restarting WE via task manager either].

Just tried it on a VM with WinXP Pro SP3. What do you think?

So to be clear:
I need .NET 3.5 or better to run this?
I'm running a winxp SP2 machine (I need to get it connected to the internet to get sp3 :oops: ) and .NET 4 says it needs sp3 to run?
Is there anything else other than the download itself that I need to run this?

Yes you need .NET 3.5 or better. You also need Microsoft's DirectX installed (and updated to latest version via web updater). All rendering is done using DirectX (no OpenGL or anything like that). Those along with the app is all you need.
