So this Friday I'll be heading off to Auburn University to study engineering (maybe, for now). And then on Monday I start a week-long orientation for freshmen NROTC midshipmen, which should be interesting...

Anyway, since there seem to be a lot of, ah, experienced (;)) grown ups around here, and quite a few Navy folks, I thought I'd see if I could glean any tips from ya'll.

So, any tips/do's & dont's/college jokes? :D

1. Classes before beer.

2. Beer

The rest of the college experience follows after the beer.

Good luck and have fun. If I could spend my 4 years at the University of Maryland all over again I would in a heartbeat. Good times. I learned some stuff also. :DL

Good luck staying sober and congratulations :yeah:

Unless you take online classes. In which case you can do Beer, interrupted by some classes. :D

Yes. Don't become stuck up. Seems to be a common problem with freshmen in here, thinking they are all special and super intelligent because they are in university, have timetables and even cook their own oatmeal! Most of them seem to calm down by their second year, but some even graduate still looking down on anyone without a degree. Pathetic.

You are there to learn. And that doesn't mean just learning and forgetting what's written in the exam books. It's an opportunity that you won't likely get again, so use it.

And as others have said, remember to have fun too.

:yeah:

Nah, although I guess it might lead to something like it later. For now it's just pre-engineering with some Navy stuff Tuesdays and Thursdays.

First, it is spelled y'all

Second, don't end a sentence with "at". Example: Where is the car at?

Now let's not go crazy on the poor kid. It may be Auburn, but it's still Alabama. I doubt anyone will notice. :O:

I've heard it both ways... I guess it depends where you're at.

Have fun, but don't forget to step up when you need to - and you will need to.

Don't take it all too seriously - but do take it seriously enough.

Sleep when you can - enough rest will get you further than not.

Remember that the guy who graduates last in his ROTC class is still called, "Sir."

OK. I'm studying naval engineering, was just wondering if we're going to be in the same proffesion :DL

First of all find something to do outside of school, join a sports club, hiking group, political organisation or student organisation. Its the simplest way of getting new friends.

Second:
Once you have passed the first calculus and physics classes don't be afraid to attend some of the graduate courses, you don't need to take the exam, but it might help you make decisions later.

Well, on Friday night our class of 65 midshipmen returned to Auburn after 3 and a half days of nonstop insanity at Fort Benning. BUT in between the screaming and discipline we did get to fire 50/60 rounds with the M9/M16A4 (only hit 4 out of 40 targets with the M16, but scored 226 out of 250 with the M9 :arrgh!:), rappelled down Eagle Tower and learned the commando crawl, ran the confidence course at Ft Benning, and hydrated, hydrated, hydrated. I swear I have never taken so many leaks in one week.

Yesterday we had a picnic with all the midshipmen to cap off the end of orientation, and I got to 'officially' meet our sergeant instructors (mostly marine option midshipmen, but a few of them were MECEPs), and we got to show our families what all we did, and we did some skits and poked fun at our instructors. Sometime tomorrow I should be moving into my dorm, and then I'll have 2 days to get ready for school. Should be fun :haha:

I'm looking at mechanical right now, maybe electrical, but for at least the first year it's basically the same stuff all around.

And...Do not drop out of your engineering program because it is "hard", all worthwhile things are. Not enjoying it is another thing, but take it from a BA that is half way through his second undergrand degree, a BS.

Well so far the second day of classes is going okay. I was 5 minutes late to muster this morning and almost late to my naval science class, definitely have to tighten up as far as that goes.

Also there are so many pretty girls at Auburn :yeah:

That there are many girls .... is just a plus, then you have little to choose from......as long as they are not too redheads, which temper :haha:

Old guy advice.....

Don't get married in college.

Sometimes it's better to sit and silence and look stupid, rather then open your mouth and remove all doubt. So just spend the first few months walking around with your mouth shut, just smile and nod your head.

Don't hook up with the first girl who makes your crotch happy. Trust me. Being single in college with provide you with many opportunities for making your crotch happy. Don't miss out on those opportunities by hooking up with a latch on unit. Sample as much candy as you can before you decide on a favorite flavor.

Learn to learn. Learn how to learn. Don't memorize. Today's facts are tomorrows history. Keep an open mind.

Don't get married in college.

If someone comes up to you and says they want you to try something, do something, or help with something, expect that you are about to be made the butt of a joke. Just say "no thanks, I'll watch you do it first".

Don't drink until you pass out. We'll be monitoring Youtube for videos of you waking up with duct tape on your arse, or worse....

All I can think of for now. Wish I was you, knowing then what I know now, I'd do it much better the second time around.

Hehe, thanks for the tips MothBalls. Dunno that I would have time to get married anyway ;)

Bugger if I know, but it was plenty hot in our blueberries. (although I have to say that I personally kind of like the look of those blue utilities, at least when there aren't any Marines around looking hardcore in their woodlands) When we got to take off our blouses and lounge around in undershirts it was heaven, until the flies found us :haha: But to be honest half the time I didn't mind the heat; we didn't do much physical activity until the last day, and even then I was having too much fun on the obstacle course to care. And anyway, after a month of triple-digit temperatures in Dallas, anything in the 90s is paradise.
