I thought it may be interesting to have a place where we can post all our various 'contact' and detection conditions we find ourselves in here so we may be able to compile a sort of 'chart' as a future reference,much like some of you did with ship speeds etc.
Ideally we need to have approximate detection ranges for the following conditions.This will also be dependant on ship type,ie warship,merchant etc,and the relative skill of the watch crew on the enemy vessel.

- dawn,clear
- dawn,reduced visibility
- dawn,low visibility

- day,clear
- day,reduced
- day,low

- dusk,clear
- dusk,reduced
- dusk,low

- night,clear
- night,reduced
- night,low

- stormy,clear
- stormy,reduced
- stormy,low

Last night for instance I managed to successfully engage a merchant at night undetected with decks awash at 1000-1200m from his SB flank,and conditions were fairly clear.I fired at bearing 290 so this may have helped a bit because if I was dead level with him he may have seen me.These ranges would be far closer say in reduced visibility,even allowing for ranges as close as 500m on the surface.It would also be important to note that this information will change as allied detection gets better.
Knowing the above information can help us quickly decide what type of attack to carry out.

..hi Paul. i work from this 3-part chart:

SHIP SPEED.
SLOW= 1-6,7 KNOTS.
MEDIUM= 7-14 (8-9) KNOTS
FAST= 15-24 (12-14) KNOTS
VERY FAST = 25+ KNOTS.

RANGE.
LONG RANGE = 3-15 KM
MIDD RANGE = 1-3 KM
SHORT RANGE = LESS THAN 1KM

VISUAL RANGE.
(him spotting me)

CLEAR DAY = 10-15KM
ROUGH SEAS GOOD VIS. = 8-10KM
ROUGH SEAS BAD VIS = 2-3KM

(make sure i am barely able to see him
whilst flanking.)

note: i am not sure how night visability is worked out. maybe i can make this a four part chart with someones advice and experience.

Thanks for the input mate.
I have decided to make some reference cards for my game mounted on thin card,the visibility ranges are going to be my first.
I notice you can see shadows at 10km?.Do you have a mod that extends vis ranges beyond say,9km?.

...sorry Paul, i dont have a mod that you suggest.
but on another point might'n it be better to take the 'reduced' out from your chart as we dont actually know to what degree 'reduced' can/could mean.
i think the reduced bit is down to personal interpretation far more than the clear or low.
maybe the reduced could be interpreted in another way - same way as range in mine, as a set standard with a boundary?

Reduced visibility,anything from slight to medium fog,or the reduced light conditions normally experienced at dawn and dusk.
