Hi all. Im New:)
I play mostly SH4
Hi, everybody.
As an former soldier, I'm naturally interested by military simulators. But in this particular case, I will only speak about subs.
I keep an excellent memory of my youth, during a tour through many military schools or places in Brittany (Military Academy at Saint-Cyr-Coëtquidan, Naval Academy at Brest-Poulmic, School of Fusiliers Marins at Lorient ...).
In this last town, we were likely to visit a (french) submarine of the 2° ESM (2e Escadrille de Sous-Marins) in duty in the active base of Lorient (Keroman III). Impressing !!! When I saw later the film "Das Boot", I found the same environment of a submarine pen at work.
It is unfortunately finished : the French Navy left Keroman, given to the town. Only some naval or fishing activities in Keroman I and II. Keroman III stays in abandonment, with the possibility to visit sometimes small parts and roofs (the 3 Flak stations). Desperately empty, like La Pallice or Saint-Nazaire !!!
A small compensation : we can visit the Davis Tower (a building for training crews to escape from a sub, used from 1942 to 1997), near to Keroman I. And since last year, a sub named Flore (Daphné class) can be visited. I saw it a few years ago, on the slipway beetwen Keroman I and Keroman II, waiting to be cut in pieces. It's now saved !
About submarine simulators, I used :
Silent Service (Microprose) - DOS 1985
http://images.imagehotel.net/n839yril37_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?n839yril37.jpg)
Silent Service II (Microprose) - DOS 1990
http://images.imagehotel.net/7zzi750xp5_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?7zzi750xp5.jpg)
Microprose was the "ruler" about simulators ... RIP !
Wolfpack (Novalogic) - DOS 1990
http://images.imagehotel.net/u39up8mk1o_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?u39up8mk1o.jpg)
Innovator (and with a mission editor), but few battle stations ...
Das Boot (Three-Sixty) - DOS 1990
http://images.imagehotel.net/gs9jwhpwen_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?gs9jwhpwen.jpg)
Great with the use of Enigma machine and of the Flak guns !
SSN-21 Seawolf (Electronic Arts) - DOS 1994
http://images.imagehotel.net/dibuwpijgf_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?dibuwpijgf.jpg)
A try with a modern sub simulator, but not really my cup of tea ...
Aces of the Deep (Dynamix) - DOS 1994
http://images.imagehotel.net/s3ntmeo18l_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?s3ntmeo18l.jpg)
A reference !!!
Command:Aces of the Deep (Sierra) - Windows 1995
http://images.imagehotel.net/m15amockhf_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?m15amockhf.jpg)
An improvment ? But Dynamix/Sierra was another great simulators publisher (with all the "Aces"). Another RIP !
Silent Hunter (SSI) - DOS 1996
http://images.imagehotel.net/tnfghoquq3_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?tnfghoquq3.jpg)
Another reference. I got initially the French version, and then the US, and the 3 Patrol Disks (difficult in France ...). Brilliant with pilot rescue missions.
Silent Hunter: Commander's Edition (SSI) - DOS 1997
http://images.imagehotel.net/jf4bhlteev_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?jf4bhlteev.jpg)
A "must have", very difficult to get in France ! Using it during a lot of months, I even discovered the single cheat of the game (to move instantaneously the sub to the other side of the map or to destroy instantaneously a target without any shell or torpedo). I had some IT knowledges : I had left Army, and I had become developer, Unix (Sytem V, HP, IBM AIX ...) admin, DBA Oracle ... So some knowledges, but also some hacking "itchings" ...
Strategic Simulations was one of the great wargames makers (the "Steel Panthers" series, my other passion). Very regretted !!!
Silent Hunter II (UbiSoft) - Windows 2001
http://images.imagehotel.net/8o17uwbrr0_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?8o17uwbrr0.jpg)
Good idea to use with Destroyer Command. But ...
Silent Hunter III (UbiSoft) - XP 2005
http://images.imagehotel.net/dt8cufbwjx_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?dt8cufbwjx.jpg)
My preferred, with a lots of mods !
Silent Hunter 4 (UbiSoft) - XP 2007
http://images.imagehotel.net/a9nhwl9d55_tn.jpg (http://images.imagehotel.net/?a9nhwl9d55.jpg)
Good !
----------------
It appears that it exists a soft named "Silent Hunter 5". Some affirm that "the game must be linked with the Ubi.com, and the PC must be connected during the entire season with the Internet". It must be a joke !!! If not, it's hardly compatible with the French laws. In this case, only one solution : boycotting ...
Cheers.

Alright, so technically I joined in July, but I haven't actually gotten around to posting, so...here goes nothing!
My name is Shmun, and you bunch of persuasive jerks won me over. :P I had a scant passing interest in submarines before watching jefmajor's Let's Play of Silent Hunter 4. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to give it a shot myself. Searching for information about the game, I found a link to this very forum. "Ooh, that looks useful." A few days later, I'm hooked. Three campaigns in to SH4, and a consistently updated knowledge base about submarines in general. I fear for what the future may hold, as quickly as this has grabbed me. I'm gonna lose friends and families to underwater metal tubes! Curse you all, you magnificent bas- right, family friendly!
So here's to you, folks, and the knowledge base I've launched myself into!

A warm Hello to everyone in the community at SubSim. :DL
I've been around the forum for a while now (since June of 2010). It was in mid-June 2010 when I stumbled across the game-simulation Silent Hunter 4. When I have time to play I like to custom-configure all of the simulation-type games that I own, even if it means that I'm not playing games constantly. I love games that are as realistic as possible -- but not frustratingly impossible -- FUN + REALISM is the key for me.
I'd like to thank all the modders who have shared and contributed their works and allowing the whole sub-community to customize their own game and enjoy the best playing experience. :salute:
Take care.

Hey Everyone,
Been a longtime fan of Flight & Sub sims before switching to a Mac. I thought my Sub sim days were over till stumbling across Crossover Games & Steam. SH III & IV work flawlessly and it is a thrill to hit the high seas again!
I did figure out how to mod some things, but couldn't get JSGME to work. Still happy with the Map & Environmental Mod that really enhance the gameplay!
I am hoping for SH V to be able to run someday on my Mac, but am very happy to back in the game.
This is a great site and resource to Sub Sim fans and I am delighted to be a part of the community!
Cheers

I started in sub sims with the original Silent Service from Microprose, on a 4.77 Tandy 1000. Have played them on and off since then, and am now getting back into SH4.
Thanks,
BWW

Hello everyone!
This is my first time here on this forum. In the past I played SH3 from mid 2005 till end of 2006, but in this weekend I bought a new SH3 (DVD) from a local store (I think it was forgot on the bookstand from several months, maybe years :DL) and in the next days I'll try to play it again.
One question: I have Win7-64bits, it is possible to make SH3 to work with this OS?

Welcome to SubSim Matey...I have the same OS....load the game into C\Program Files (x86) and right click on the SH3 desktop icon, Properties>Compatability tab and tick the Disable desktop composition box.

I have been a huge fan of the silent hunter game series since the first silent hunter. Silent hunter 3 was by far my favorite:haha:. When I bought the fourth and the fifth titles. I became irritated by all the bugs and trouble with the AI that I stopped playing the games for good:damn::wah:. But my heart always longed for another game that would come out with improved graphics yet with the awesome game engine that was silent hunter 3:zzz: to bring me back to the game again. You guys did that.
Thank you guys for restoring my interest in playing silent hunter 5:yeah:! Thanks to your hard work and the many mods you have made. Now the game is fun and you have restored my love for playing the game again. Too bad the developers couldn't put out the game to the level that you guys have raised it to. It would have saved a lot of heart ache.
Now I'm just trying to figure out the right combination of mods. And what order to put them in. Downloading your stuff like a kid in a candy store.:rotfl2:

Hello everyone,
I've been playing SH3 for about two years now. I'm using GWX under SH3 commander with 80% realism settings. I've played many complete campaigns and survived only a few of them.
Subsim is a great place to be when you love this game as i do.
My next move will probably be using RUB mod and trying muti player.

Hello fellow captains,
I have just joined subsim as i have started sh4 again. I have played all of them except sh1 and 2. I still think i like sh3 the best. I have been particularly interested in the career playable ships as i have never found a navy game as good as the SH series. I have been playing sh4 with TMO and the career Cleveland cruiser, very fun! Can anyone recommend any other career playable ships, like destroyers etc. Is there a Jap career yet? I think there was a team working on one.

i've been a member for a few years now, just rigged for silent running.
Great community.
I managed to find SH V in a bargain bin and decided to take the plunge, have been downloading the mods used in the Let's Play series on YouTube , but the limit, being a necessary evil, is preventing me from getting it all in one go so i had to surface to continue.
Can't wait to get it all installed, up and running.
Anyway, enough of the sub references.

I bought Silent Hunter 5 just last weekend (a drunk decision no less), but I'm glad I got it. Either I've played the 'run & gun' type of games too often (mindless games) or most games just aren't very 'strategic' anymore. I'm having a blast with SH5, even though it took me quite a while to 'master' the torpedoes. It's probably the first 'real strategic' game I've played since Silent Service for NES.. forever ago. I have the steam version (which I've been reading, it might've not been the best choice :damn:) but I'm going to see about using the mods.
Happy hunting

Hey all, I have installed JSGME and have a few mods ready to be activated.. now I'm just waiting for boring work to fly by... Can't wait to try them out when I get home.
But one question I do have, does anyone else find themselves taking a bunch of screenshots when your torps hit a ship? :D

Welcome aboard all you guys.
And CrowSHV, yes! Seeing the plume of water rising is a fantastic sight, and it means you did something right. I don't know how SHV works but with SH3 a lot of people have it very realistic - except for external camera, so they can take exactly that kind of shot.

Hi Herr-Berbunch, I know what you mean on the plume of water :DL. I have a few screenshots where I have blown off the first 15-20' of the bow.. I didn't realize the default game had 'those' kinds of details. I will definitely be using realism a mod, but will keep searching throughout the day for a good/the best one, unless there is no noticeable difference between them.
Sorry for the chitter-chatter if it's not allowed here.

What's a forum if not to chitter-chatter :D
If you've been on many other gaming forum, with their rude fanboy-I-know-it-all-why-don't-you mentality then you are if for a refreshing suprise here. Most people are mature (in actions, not neccesarily years) and we all want the most out of a game, and to have a good time in doing so. :arrgh!:

I haven't been on many gaming forums, I usually browse through them first (to find answers or hints) and most of the time I read lots of that 'elitist' stuff going on; That's when I don't bother. After a few days of searching and reading on these forums, this place IS completely different from the others (like you said) which is why I registered. :yeah:
There are huge amounts of info on here and helpful people, so I'm sure I won't be needing to ask many questions. But I don't mind interacting and chatting either. :)

A friendly challenge for ya.....if you can get a BB to 'turn 'turtle'...be sure to post a screenshot of before, during (torpedo explosion) and after and I'll send you a GWX enamel cap badge, I'm sure I've still got one lying around :03:

Oh wow, I had no idea that could happen either. I'll try to do it out of curiosity, I think I may know how. :hmmm: I'm guessing multiple repeated hits on the very bottom (~6-6.5m?) in motion with the sway, but I'm probably wrong. I'll have it figured out by this weekend.

Hi mates,
Like many probably here I got the U-boot virus with the movie "das boot" long ago. I used and appreciated this forum a few years ago when i was playing the great SH3, but never registered. Now that I'm back into a good old type VII with SH5, i want to register to say "thank you" to all the passionate people here, always helping around. This forum is a good example of the beauty and strength of the free internet : it can accomplish much more than dumb corporations !
I send you a wave (;)) from Montréal !
All hail the forum !

It's been a while since I was on this forum. In fact, my old screen name was forgotten, and I've changed email addys several times, so I don't have a clue.
I first was introduced to Silent Hunter with Version 2. I purchased SH4, but didn't install it until recently. Now, I have begun the learning curve for the game.
There's a LOT different from SH2! I get a little shaky with the crew management issues. I've played with the Mission Editor in order to give me a simple 2 tanker convoy with NO escorts. This way I can practice without the threats of depth charges. Working with different difficulty levels.
Jeff

Hi I have been signed up here since August 2010 I think.
My husband plays SH5, but I mange his downloads.
Having some problems with the downloads atm.
I read the sticky, so hopefully it will work fine again in an hour ^^
He can't wait to get the mod 'Open Horizon'.
:salute: Patience is your best weapon now, then everything goes smooth.
I have owned SH5 since 2010 but I didn't play it much:dead:
Now I will try it again with some mods and hope it feels better:DL
