Intro
This mod will provides an environment which is realistic and immersive. It will raise Sh3 to the next level.

Concept
I created a model which I calculated values of the parameters for the various scenes instead of tweaking them one by one. This idea I already used to mod SH-5 but I lost my interest in that game. The model directly changes the EnvColor.dat file. Of course still a lot of tuning and testing is needed but it gives consistent and results.

Features
· Great immersion. Many improvements over the previous versions but reuse of the goodies like the wave motion.
· More Natural colours based on real life pictures
· Consistent inter-scene colours. Colour adjustment with a natural result during the transition between two scene.
· Storm/cloud based on grey sky and improved green "Das Boot" like water.
· Improved rain. Thinner and more grey so rain becomes less visible, more as it is in reality and at night the effect of unnatural white rain has been reduced to a more acceptable degree.
· Improved sunset and colour changes during the day.
· Night scene kept lighter so it can be played more easier.
· Colour above and underwater are consistent.
· Natural wave motion as in the previous version.

Important Notes
· You may need to adapt Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic filter settings in your graphic card drivers to enhance visual quality. But be careful and check if it does not effect colour quality. I had for example very bad experiences with the Ati tray tools.
· This Mod has been tested with GWX and LSH. For LSH-users a foam mod is included. I expect that it will work with other mega mods.
· Like the previous version of SH5 Water for SH3 this mod will need some extra effort from your hardware.
· I did not create different versions for the Mediterranean or Artic like in the previous version. I noticed that most people use the Atlantic version (default). During campaigning the game is stuck in the Atlantic version where ever your are. This is a stock bug.
· Right now the 8 Km and 16 Km are available. The 20K has issues on which I'm still working.

Installation
· Unzip the archive to your MOD map and activate with JSGME.

You can download the mod here:

Screenshots

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Freighter12h15mstorps.jpg
Mid-day. I experienced a lot with this scene as it is very dull. I found out that this scene lives up when the sky is made light blue rather than just blue.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/mediumtanker18h8mstorp2.jpg

Afternoon. I love this one! From three hours and more around sunset/sunrise yellow creeps into the sky and sunlight. Notice the change in the underwater colour, the foam and overall scene. By using a model high consistency is achieved.

Another evening shot.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Splash1915h8ms2.jpg
I learned that there are many sunsets. This one is just great. Problem with the sunsets/sunrises is that it should fit with the scenes before and after.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/BlackSwane1915h8ms.jpg
Beautiful Black Swan destroyer.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Sunsetperis19158ms.jpg
Sunset: through the periscope.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Destroyer20h8ms.jpg
Destroyer just after sunset. Colours are consistent as the model calculates them marvelous.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/LargeCargp20108ms.jpg
This is a complicated scene. It would have been easy to make it blue. But in reality the sky turns to a kind of blue green before it turns blue during the night.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Nightstalker.jpg
I made the night playable by not making it too dark.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/PeriscopeNelson22h8ms.jpg
... you should still be able to hit something instead of wondering if your scope is above or still under water.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Orion23h.jpg
The sign of Scorpio through the persiscope.

What about bad wheather?

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/DasBoot.jpg
"Das Boot" like water.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Mediamtankerstormnoraiin12h15ms.jpg
The green-grey storm scene has been a huge effort to create. Unfortunately the SH-3 reflection has a will of itself. SH-3 has a tendency to spoil a scene by adding red. At certain moments I really doubted that it would be possible.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/SH3Img12-7-2011_19941_511.jpg
This is just great! Compare it to stock...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Rain.jpg
I made the rain thinner and darker grey. This makes rain less visible during the day and night.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/Destroyer20h15ms.jpg
At dawn with storm and destroyer. The sky becomes more blue.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/periscopestormraon12h15ms.jpg
Storm through the periscope during storm.

Have fun with it! Looking forward to your reactions and experiences!

I am fiddeling around with my "own" SH3:

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/961/capture0081507201123023.jpg

I have to use the 8km version for some reasons. Today is May, 22th, 1941, 22:00...

I tried (I think so...) every environment mod, I could get my hands on. Even your v.9

Your v.10 looks really good so far. The fps on my laptop drops around 5 - 9, so no big deal. VSync on. I am going to try it out tonight.
Really nice one, thank you very much. These shots are with your v.10:

Hi Danasan. Thank you! Looking at your screenshots I would suggest to cranck up the AA and/or AF but that would yield 5 fps... :)

Hi,

It was just a quick test while sitting at my laptop. So when it comes to the PC, I'll squeeze everything out of it. Both have the same "version" installed.

Unfortunatly, my girlfriend is playing the incredible settlers II on my PC atm...:rotfl2:

thanks for your efforts in this...but the water does not stand the comparison with sh5! the sh3 water is not very tweakable as some basic instruments are missing for a good/real looking water -> nice shaders!!!

using the sh3 ressources, we will never get a nice looking water.

Congratulations on the progress in the environment of sh3.
But it lacks a bit, perhaps, are the reflections of clouds and those ships in the water. If now, the water does not seem too sh3 transparent, it would give the effect of mirror objects that are above.
This is not a criticism but a notice to change this mod.
Claude.

That's obvious & I fully agree with you. The name of this mod came as the first version was released a few months before SH-5. I was then inspired by the preview-screenshots.

Mmm. Do you use Nvidia?

I expect that the sunhalo is too weak for the afternoon scene but only with some trial and error it can be increased. Does this problem also exist at sunset? Or 12:00 O'clock?

I see it's the navigation mission. Can you set the "Clouds=0" in the Navigation.mis file in the directory:

....\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\NavalAcademy\Nav igation\English\Navigation

And try again?

For the golfball problem can you help with some experiments?

-Download experiment.zip:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/dp1pszsqudpzst2/Experiment.zip

-Rollback your current SH-5 Water install
-Activate Experiment 3 and test
-Activate Experiment 2 and test
-Activate Experiment 1 and test
-Then you can rollback them all...

You can use the navigation from the naval academy as these mission load fastest.

Look forward to the results

But there isn`t a problem with the halo but with the size of the sun.

So you do see the halo? Because the sun is small (0,15 whatever unit) the same size as in the previous version and can be increased. What I see from Seeadler's screenshot is that the halo is missing. Enlarger the sun will not help. Do you have the same problem? Can you upload a picture?

I have the impression that people with the golfball sun do use Ati.

Hi rik !

I test your MOD (16km) and I must say: All works well, no problems, looks very nice !!!

With HiResFix enabled (1280x1024) I don´t have the Golfball Sun !
Without HiResFix at Standard Resolution I´ve the Golfball Sun too ! But this is the same with each Env.MOD (e.g. from makman). Always when HiResFix enabled, no Golfball Sun, without Fix > Golfball Sun !

I´ve an nVidia GTX260 Card !

So I play since years always with HiResFix and I would recommend to anyone do the same ! ;) With Fix enabled is another game-experience !

I see what you mean. Good news is that there is no real problem. It is indeed the SunHalo in the EnvColors files. The SunHalo is buggy. It doesnot respond to changes in settings as you would expect. That makes modding difficult.

I tuned the size of the halo in the game with what I saw in reality and I tried to create the effect that the sunlightlevel decreases when it disappeared behind the clouds. When that happens the halo color will be tuned down to the color specified in the environmentfiles. The other moment that the halocolor will appear is at sunset/rise.

I will check if I can use the alphachannel to get the clouds less transparent and I will look into a bigger sun(halo) as an optional mod. At the end this is matter of taste and what is possible.

Great news and good to know. HiresFix should be on top of everybody's list. There are two versions. The original one (d3d9.dll created on 24-3-2005) and one that comes with the widescreen mod(s) (19-3-2010). The original one has the ability to change the overall color which the latter lacks.

Beautiful work!

Just a thought... When looking at the last screenshots with optional sun sizes. The brightness of the sun appears very fierce and stark. I'm no sure but maybe the whiteness of it makes it look like a shot from Deep Impact or similar movie. Also (I think) if you imagine those screen shots without the sun, the colours would be perfectly believable. But with the sun, it just doesn't feel quite right. I'm guessing it's something to do with the rest of the scene not relating to that bright fierce blazing star in the sky; just some constructive critisism. Hope you don't mind. And perhaps it is a limitation of the engine anyway.

great mod and very good results with the 16 Km atmosphere. I like the 20 Km atmosphere better for game play; any progress on the issues?

I will check if I can do something with the sunhalo.tga.

I will check if I can do something with the sunhalo.tga.

I think it may just be the lack of glare. It's almost as if I'm viewing the scene through a dark tint lense -a pair of Ray Bans maybe! Just my own feeling. But I do love the screenies in the original post; the best sea yet in my opinion. :yeah:

Thank you! Keep your Ray Bans up... :haha: The sunhalo.tga can be made a bit brighter. You can experiment with it yourself. I must say I prefer the one with that comes the original mod and not the bigger versions.

is compatible with the mod NYGM?

It won't break anything essential an d cause CTDs, but the problem is that sensors get affected by environmental colors and NYGM's ones have been tweaked for its own environment. So you will probably get more blind AI because this excellent mod is darker than NYGM's original one. However, if you were feeling that you needed to be more invisible at night in NYGM, then the mod will work great for you.

Thanks for the cool water mod! Looks excellent, and the sun looks great too! No FPS hit to worry about. 2 GTX 260 cards in SLI, and she runs at the lowest, 75 FPS, and averages 130 to 160 most of the time.

Thank you for the great looking mod - I'm really enjoying the look of the water and colours in the sunrises and sunsets.

I too though am having problems with a golf ball sun. It's not quite the same as earlier posts though - I do have a "halo" of sorts around the sun (so it's not as golf balley as the earlier screengrab posted with no halo at all), but the halo is very faint, leaving the tiny sun very obvious. I'm using an ATI X1900XT card, with ATI Tray Tools.

I've tried the bigger sun mod, and it makes the halo bigger - but not the actual sun itself.

Is there anything else I can try?

I just installed this mod yesterday and I am getting the golfball sun.

I think I have an nVidia GT250 card but will have to check when I get home.

The Sunhalo.tga is indeed the solution for this problem. So what exactly do I need to do?

Basically, I'm not getting any halo around my sun.

Thanks,
Steve

Don't go over 4x AA and you should have a halo. Worked for me.

AA Setting in the NVidia cards can distort halo. Unfortunately I have an ati card.
@timbob: The sunsize is stored in the scene.dat (EnvSim->EnvSim->Sky->SunRelativeSize[13]. Now they are set to 0.33 you can update it to 0.6 or whatever you like.

Notice to all there is a 20 Km available (see #1). I tried to create a 24Km version but I ran into problems.

Hi Fubar, you are right! The update will be in the V11 serie. Subversion 60+. You should say something like: V11.60.
