View Full Version : Which mods would you recommend here...?

Good day chaps,

After doing a search in the mods section (and there are a few that interest me already) I was hoping you could recommend or direct me to any of the more popular mods that do the following -

- improve ship smoke, especially when being hit by a torpedo
- improve the overall burning effects, especially concerning oil tankers
- moon mod.I already use AIL's moon mod which is perfectly acceptable I was just curious if there were any others out there that may be even better?
- is there a mod that gives us back the translucency of the surface of the sea when submerged, like we got back in the stock game. What GWX3 did was make underwater pitch black and remove the 'watery' look from the surface. This is only a minor gripe though,I could never return back to the stock game.
- a more realistic torpedo 'impact' sound, instead of the unusual clatter of cutlery? that we got with GWX3.

Thats all for now.Could I finally just say,I would rather not hear from anyone that replies with comments like "have you even LOOKED through the downloads section?,man you are lazy!" ,yes I have, and this is a perfectly legitimate request.I would also like to keep this thread open in case I can think of any more as and when I decide I want them implemented in my game.

Many thanks :salute:

Thank you very much
I already have the torpedo damage final and the real depth charge mod, which I havent installed (wil wait until I return back to base from my current patrol).Does the real depth charge mod only affect the sound of a DC from inside the UBoat and not sounds of an actual detonating torpedo?
The torpedo explosion mod looks interesting.
Thanks again.

I did not use it with GWX so far, so I am not sure about an issue here. The rest should work fine.

Really nice mate,I will try this one out tonight for my next patrol.
I noticed the underwater image is not black,I never liked this in GWX3.
Thanks a lot for this

Any recommendations for:

1 - a mod that gives more realistic rain.At night during a storm you can practically see,NOTHING! in reality rain would be almost invisible.
2 - a mod that makes the sun look better, less flat and with a distinct halo effect.

PLEASE NOTE
I would prefer the mods that just do the above and not alter the actual environment provided for us by the GWX team,I am generally pretty happy with how they look, although if the above mods can only be done by altering something else, then so be it.

Many thanks :salute:

I managed to get fubar's face and beard mod the other day,and was hoping for some new clothing to compliment them.I downloaded the Das Boot clothing last night and am contemplating whether to use them, and also got another clothing mod too.
Ideally I would like to have all my officers in German wool overcoats (the types that were worn at Stalingrad),and the sailors in regular blue overalls (possibly with braces) stained with grease and diesel.I am not too big on stiff regimental dress, after all, this is their bloody home and tomb!
Which mods would YOU recommend for me here, and is there an overcoat mod somewhere? That would be TOO cool :|\\

Cheers guys.

Ought to keep this thread alive,I expect a lot of people may be using it before long, especially the newer members

I currently enabled fubars face and beard skins which I am really enjoying,I managed to merge that mod with the grey leather skins for the watch crew by raptor, now I am wondering if I could finally get the officers into the clothes from the Das Boot mod? .Just to also clarify here while i'm at it,the officer body files are located in the OFF.tga folder?.I will clear that folder out and replace it with the DB files, after making a quick backup of course :yep:

Do any of you mix and match clothes etc without problems?

By the way,the grey leather coats from raptor merged with the skins & beard from fubar look

AFAIK Rapt0r's Uniforms already includes Das Boot style clothes for officers other than the WO. It's the only uniform mod I use and all my officers are in sweaters, flannel shirts, etc., except for the WO.

As far as I'm concerned Rapt0r's Uniforms has everything I could ever want for uniforms - the leathers for the WO (and watch crew if desired), "Das Boot" style clothes for the rest of the officers, a "no medals" option, bearded faces. It even allows me to use a customized .tga file to put a side emblem on the officers' caps that matches my turm emblem. I don't leave port without it!

pAUL ITS THE ONE THAT mAGIC111 POSTED.I was just agreeing with it.:D

The map is not real because we can zoom in and out. Most likely in real life you have the zoomed out map and other map sheets that cover a smaller area...for example a map for AN56 sector or a map of kiel to allow a captain to navigate out.Thing is you need the zoom map to be able to plot courses in the game.I actually hate(strong word)the way you watch the boat move and the nav line disappear.I am trying to find out which file to make invisible the nav lines disappear with the sub.

Sorry its Magic1111;)

-pditty8811

I also switched back to the 1024 res version after I traced regular crashes back to the other version. What was odd is that the game would always crash when I passed through a particular area on the map. It was a spot right along my usual departure route out of base, which is how I noticed that I was *always* crashing when I tried to pass through that area.

I went through hours of looking at campaign layers in the ME (there was a waypoint right in that spot on one of the scripted shipping routes) trying to figure out if it was something related to one of the units that the game wanted to spawn there, but everything in my files checked out fine in that respect. Finally I just disabled everything and starting adding mods back in one by one... and it was the higher res version of that Grass mod that was the culprit. I never did figure out why.

Same, in fact I think you were the one who pointed this out to me. For me it was when I went from one terrain to another, like artic to arid or whatever, it would crash. So when the terrain textures had to be reloaded because the different climate, that is when it crashed.

I'm running 8gb 1666mhz. :hmmm:

oh does the 4gb hardcode fix fix this? I just did it but haven't tried these textures with it.

I don't know, I never went back and tried it again. If you find that the crashes no longer occur after installing the 4GB patch, let me know. Unless someone confirms that it makes a difference I'll stick with the 1024 version... too many bad memories of starting a new patrol only to have the game CTD over and over again.

What was also odd was that I could start a new career in Aug 1939 and pass through that same problem spot on my first (and sometimes second) patrol with no crash. It only seemed to be *after* I got past the date where the war actually started that I would have problems. Which is why I wondered if it had something to do with scripted routes or units that might have changed once the war began. I don't know how the game works in terms of rendering terrain, maybe it was trying to use a different .tga file because of a change of season or something. But I never investigated that, I just switched out the mod and got back to playing.

I just figured it was the rendering of the terrain because I currently have my SCR and RND layers blank for testing and adding mods. So I was leaving Wihelmshaven and heading to the north pole, then I would crash near Norway coast. I loaded up career in Narvik or Trondheim whatever, with no problems, but headed south to Scotland and I had a ctd. So I just came to the conclusion it was a change of terrain textures that were loading that caused it.

My crashes also happened off the Norway coast, as I was heading roughly NNW through the North Sea after leaving Wilhelmshaven. I would go east of Helgoland and then head north into AN34 and in the SE corner of that grid square the game would crash every single time. If I avoided that area I could get through the North Sea fine... but of course I could never be sure that the same problem wouldn't crop up in some other location, and if it was a change of terrain textures that was causing it then it probably would have eventually.

If you wanna try the textures now with the 4gb patch that would be cool. I'm currently making fixes or hybrids of mods at the momment. I'm working on a switch between old and new emblems. I just got done with a blend of the open hatch conning and Aces super for Type IX.

I wont be able to test the terrain textures not for awhile. :salute:

Thanks guys, it's just the constant stuff with trying to get mom's estate settled. Too many fingers in the pie and most info I get is in the form of "he said that she said that he said the lawyer said" and decisions that need to get made in order to move things along are held up because everybody's got a different understanding of what needs to be done.

Good news is I should have the title to mom's car next weekend and I'm hoping to get the registration on that one plus disposal of my old car taken care of at the same time, if all goes well. Had several people interested in buying the old car and if I can get that set in motion I may be able to take care of all of it in one visit to the appropriate county office. It just means a lot of loose ends to try and tie up in a very short time, lol.

Any recommendations for a new deck gun sound?,that ideally contains the actual reloading sounds and a 'beefier' sound to the gun maybe.I once had a sound file that altered the something 'pop' file and i'm sure the reload sound was included, but I sadly lost it after succumbing to a data loss issue about 1 year ago now,I formatted my entire system while foolishly leaving my 250 GB external hard drive still connected that contained all my game mods, screenshots & saved games on,formatting that in the process!.
Thanks a lot :salute:

I think these are what you might be looking for. Highly recommended, (the best I've come across), both AA and deck sounds included. Simply drop them in your 'SH3\data\Sound' folder or enable via JSGME and you're good to go!

I just tested the files and they sound pretty good. The deck gun sound is very similar to the old one I had the only difference being is on mine there was an extra "los!" at the end of the shell case ejection sound and prior to firing the next round.
Do you know if these are authentic sounds?

Thanks again mate.

Thank you for these files , as I was looking for a sound file for the AA guns. I also had the sound for the deck gun as Paul Riley had.

Thanks again.

Do these AA sound files fire at a high rate as you'd expect?,because when I tested the file earlier there is only a single shot sound.I expect the sound will be repeated to simulate a high rate of fire weapon.

They will fire at the required rate.

The sound file has nothing to do with the rate of fire. It will play every time the gun fires.

I tested the flak guns and the sound works fine. You can hear the empty shells as they hit the bridge floor one after the other.

I feel as if there is a small conflict between the sound of the gun and the sound of the shell casings hitting the deck when shooting a long burst but that might just be me.

I tested the sound file on the early war 20mm and it was ok.
When more rapid firing flaks are available I'll repeat the test.

Could well be the case because I was using the twin 20mm with 80 rounds capacity.
