Question about convoy/ship routing in TMO

I seem to have run into alot of ships and convoys in the middle of the ocean without TMO now I am having a pretty hard time finding ships. Are they routed near the coast in TMO (like in real life)?

TMO significantly reduces traffic, which in the stock game was like walking down Oxford Street on Christmas Eve.
