Greetings all.

I have been trying to sort through all these mods and get them installed, but frankly, I'm pretty lost. I've downloaded a bunch of different mods, but right out of the pen I am having certain compatibility issues, and trouble tracking down pre-requisite mods for other mods that look good.

For the past year or so I have been running only GWX 3 or Gold or whatever the version is. The last one anyway. I lost everything on my system and figured after the reformat, this would be a good time to dig in and really get SH3 maximized for my system.

My onboard integrated graphics is pretty weak, ATI x1270 so I am not so concerned about tweaking external realism to the point that it will keep crashing. However, I would like to tweak my boat for maximum playability.
So, I figured a thread on the subject might help me and others get a good boat up and running to its full potential.

Please helpe me find these sorts of mods, and give me an order in which to install them with JSGME. Interiors, gramophone tracks, messages, uniforms, ambient and action sounds, better tools, clickable/operable equipment, all those sorts of things.

As I said, I really don't need to increase externals so much. Detailed sea floors, skins on other craft, not so important to me. Of course, if you think there is something really cool or important, feel free to drop it on me.

If there is a mod that has several different options, please let me know what the options are, and why you prefer one mod over another. For example, maybe there are several different periscope mods out there. Let me know what your favorite one is, why, and maybe some of the other mods that you have tried in that particular category.

Also, please drop a link to the thread where a discussion and/or links to the download can be found. I keep hearing about some mods, but can't actually find the download.

Hope this is not being too forward being a newb here, but like I said too, this could be a good thread for everyone to come together and assemble a nice sort of "package" like GWX did.

Cheers guys. :arrgh!:

First off, welcome aboard! :salute:

Secondly, the search function is your friend. Try searching the mod forum by putting some of your key words in and see what you turn up.

Thirdly, look thru the downloads section. Alot of the mods end up there along with links to the thread in some cases.

Also, try this thread:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=141242

It is a bit out of date but it might give you a starting point as well. I know there are a few other threads that have people list what mods they are using that might give you some ideas as well.

Everybody has different tastes. The key is to try different ones and see what you like. Problem is, once you get the mods set up just the way you like them and think "Now I can get some serious playing time in!", along comes another great mod that may require some rearranging of mods.
But, such is the life of an SH3/SH4 player.

:)

Kaptian,

I am in a similar situation to you regarding pc performance and I run the mods list in my signature. My aim is for a realistic (in so much that it is a game) and immersive experience which seems to me what you are looking for.

Things not included below are some of the optional mods with GWX such as alternative flotillas and enhanced damage effects that I have installed.

Just try your mods one at a time to see if you like it/them, and also to narrow down any compatibility issues.

Also it's no good having unnecessary mods activated, i.e. don't have St Naz active if you're operating from Norway towards Greenland/Canada.

Graphics card isn't everything, RAM is important too - you should easily and quite cheaply add some more and then enable SH3 to use it.

Have fun :salute:

Thanks again guys.

Yeah, I have had some compatibility issues, but I guess it will just be a trial and error process until I get 'er running smooth.

Some of the mods are almost redundant, but have other little things that I like, but then cause problems. Like I added a sound mod that killed the open-hatch function. Oh well, think maybe Ill dive been back in tonight and see what I can put together. Been distracted since I last posted and haven't even fired the game back up.

When I do finally get a nice set up running smooth, I will be sure to share.

Okay. The FM NewInterior mod appears to be the very best upgrade for the interior of the sub. Are there any other mods that will open even more areas of the sub? Like the torpedo rooms perhaps, or the electric engine rooms?

Also, I am noticing that the diesel engines are EXTREMELY loud in the command room but if I go to the engine room, they get quieter, and then stay quieter as I move about the boat after that. I can't remember what I did, but it suddenly got louder again. I just can't have that when I am playing late at night. Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Is there a better internal life sound mod that is compatible and that you might prefer?

I think I am also going to use a mod to put the crew in casual dress, and the pinup girls mod.

Lemme fire it up here and see what I got. Ill check back later with an update. Cheers.

I don't know what might be in the works, but so far the New Interiors mod will give you as much of an interior as you can get at the moment.

If you have S3ditor you can open up the Sh3.sdl file that comes with New Interiors (or Aces' multi-mod compatibility .sdl file, if that's what you're using) and play around with the settings for the diesel sound that Flakmonkey added.

I also found the internal diesel sound a bit too loud for my liking, especially since it drowned out the toonz from the gramophone, which I really like to listen to sometimes when playing. Plus I got what most people described as the "jet engine" effect when switching from station to station. That can also be done away with, although as I understand it you lose some of the 3D effect of the sound that way but I couldn't use the mod otherwise.

When you open the file, the entry you need to look for is DD_Engine.DieselEx, with a wave name of Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav. In the FM NewInteriors .sdl file (which you'll find in the data\Sound folder), it's at the very bottom; in Aces' compatibility version I think it's about 3/4 of the way down from the top. When you find it, highlight it by clicking on it once and the values for it will appear on the right. You can adjust the volume down from 100 to whatever you like, I have mine set at 75.

To get rid of the "jet engine" distortion (if you have it) you need to reset the Doppler factor to 0.

Make a copy of the current file and do your tweaking on that and then save the changes on close, and then put that version of the into your data\Sound folder (make a backup of the existing version first!) and the next time you load the game you can see if it sounds better. I had to adjust the volume several times but it was worth the tweaking in order to use such an awesome mod.

An easier solution would be this handy little mod by brett25:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162778

It's designed specifically for FM Interiors and it simply replaces the existing diesel sound with one that isn't as deafening. That way you can listen to your music :03:, or even just your own thoughts for a while.

It was really bad on my system, I couldn't take it. But whatever works. The suggestion about using brett25's mod mentioned above might be the way to go if volume is your only concern.

If you are happy with the way SH3 sounds prior to FM_New Interiors you can just delete the mod's data/sound/sh3.sdl before you enable in JSGME. That way FM_New Interiors won't overwrite your usual Sh3.sdl and you'll get the new interiors but retain the unmodded engine sounds.

It worked for me, it was just too loud on my system and strangely the doppler effect worked the wrong way, it got louder the further I was away from the engine room rather than the other way around.

So I pulled the sounds folder from FM's Interiors mod, and then tried to use SH3 Internal life mod v 1.2, and still have the same problem with the super loud diesels.

Are there any good sound mods that don't have loud diesels, or am I stuck with vanilla sounds to avoid them?

If it's still too loud, you might want to edit the volume of the ambient sound in the data file. You'll need to use Silent 3ditor to make the necessary adjustments. IIRC you can set it through the sh3.sdl file or, (if not there), simply run the ambient file through a freeware audio program and turn down the amplification. Good luck! :sunny:

Ohhh, I gotcha. So it's not really a matter of more or less data, just repair times. Hmmmm. Think I might go with full. More realistic I would guess. Maybe combine that with the depth charge range reducer mod I found somewhere. Reduces to a more realistic 20m damage zone I think it said, half of stock damage range.

Just looking at your mod list, a couple of things jump out at me. First off you should try activating New Interiors after Flag&Pens. Second, IIRC, Super Turms 6 adds it's own .dat file for the command room which is likely overwriting the one supplied by New Interiors. I believe the two would have to be merged in order to use them together.

Try disabling Super Turms and then adjust the mod order so that Flag&Pens is before NI. Next, run a test and see if the hatch and flag behave themselves. :sunny:

KapitanSpinks

Okay, put them in in reverse order, so I got the hatch and the flag now. But I notice that I am not getting any sound from the one mod that is supposed to give me bells when I switch speed. Might play around and see if I can get that working, not an important one though.

Also, I notice that I ami missing two sailors at the controls in the command room. Is that part of the FM Interiors mod to lose them? Again, not really all that important really, just curious.

And now that I have the engines quieted down, I am kind of missing not having ANY engine sound at all. Lol. I think I still have the electrics though, and I can still hear the diesels a little when I am standing outside.

The rationale is the post doesn't need to be manned while you're surfaced and two members of the watch crew will take up station there (a la Das Boot - wearing slickers and all) once you submerge.

All the years I have owned this game, I have yet to get to 1941 playing from start of war. I know it's not necessarily realistic, but my original plan was to play a full campaign, from beginning to end of war... and flee to a secret base in Antarctica! Lol. :arrgh!:

Ah. sorry about that.

I can relate to that. When I first started playing I was in mid-1940 when Beery's 'Real U-Boat' came out. I wanted to try it from the beginning so I scrubbed the campaign and started over. Then Rubini's original 'Harbor Traffic Mod' was released, and I needed to see the ships coming and going in 1939. Then the first 'Grey Wolves', and you get the idea.

Since SH1 I've also been in the habit of running simultaneous careers, one from each available flotilla. Currently I'm not playing at all, waiting for a new computer that will run FM's New Interiors and the Merchant Fleet Mod without crashing. I've already been waiting for more than a year, and it doesn't look like I'll be getting one any time soon, so I'm thinking about starting another set of careers on the 1st of July.

We'll see.
