View Full Version : [WIP] Depth charge surface effect

This is my first try at modding something for SH4. I always missed that water surface "disc" effect when DCs exploded that was present in SH3 but didn't show up in SH4. I couldn't find a mod that fixed that so I decided to see if I could make the effect work in SH4 and by (lots of) trial and error :damn: and a bit of luck I got something similar to work in SH4. The effect itself was already present, I just had to tweak it so it would show up.


It's just an eye candy mod, and far from perfect, but I think it adds a more realistic touch to the explosions.

This is the default depth charge effect (very plain):

I'm still tweaking a few files and when I'm done I'll post them here. It's a small way to give back to the modding community that helps making the game more enjoyable!

The mod should now work with shells and bullets also:

NOTE: This effect should work with TMO 2.1, 2.2 and 2.5. It won't be compatible with any mod that changes particles.dat or Materials.dat!

There are two folders, JSGME ready:

Splash_effect_DC_bombs_bullets_shells_1.0_for_TMO2 ---> Effects on depth charge, bomb, bullet and shell splashes

Splash_effect_DC_bombs_only_1.0_for_TMO2 ---> Effects on depth charge and bomb splashes only


There are a couple of issues:


- Just like the Sun halo and the explosion effect when planes hit the water surface, you will be able to see this effect through objects:

For what I understand this is an original SH4 bug. If you can live with that, fine, if not I hope some of the more experienced modders can fix this bug! :)

- Sometimes some of the effects won't show up if you change camera views when an explosion(DC or bombs) is about to happen or if the explosions are far away. But most of the time it works fine.


If you wish you can tweak the effects' bitmap by editing the texture file DC_halo.dds to your liking.

Same "complaints" about the link - all it do, is offering a download to play Casino Poker...

Great looking effect! Just need to figure out how to get the water in the surrounding area of the DC explosion to rise before the column shoots up.

Actually I was also working on that! For machine gun bullets and shells as well.

I looked everywhere on the SH4 forum but couldn't find any mod that had this effect. There were a few threads talking about it though. If you find it let me know! :)

Loaded it up. All spash effects works great with TMO/RSRD. Really great eye candy when a Type C escort unloads 6 Y guns on you...

I'm glad it's working with RSRD, I had test it only with TMO.

Seems some ships the charges don't splash, but not sure how you did it, could be added ships or charge types.

I noticed that the new effect showed up sometimes, and sometimes did not, even when the charges were dropped from the same ship. I was wondering if it was a difference between y-guns and roll-off racks.

Other than that, I like this mod.

Reading his post and testing it, I think it's just cam angles that may goof the effect once in awhile, but no big deal, great lil mod concept.

Hi Fish40, this is based on TMO2.0 only, I don't have RFB installed so I'm not sure if it will work with this mod. It should work with TMO+RSRD though.

Maybe, but I think it's more a cam effect. At times I've briefly seen the effect turning the cam and if I move fast, the effect goes away. Also, on every escort using RSRD I've seen the charge effect so far, just at times it's not there, sometimes the same run some charges will have the effect, others won't. Still, mine work most the time.

Really one of my fav eye candy mods. Gives you a much better idea how different ships drop patterns.

Click the link in my sig, and look for splash effects. When the page loads, change the listing from most popular to Names A-Z and it should be the 3rd one from the top.

Ugh, this mod overwrites the different smoke mod for TMO, anyone know how to fix that? They share a particles.dat file for some reason.

Vickers provided another particles.dat for use with the splash effects mod. I remember getting it sometime around Sept 2011. I tried to find it searching this forum but with no luck. Try sending him a PM.

I have taken hiatus from playing for a few months so just saw your question. I am not aware of Vickers posting his modified particles.dat element. I found though that having his version of particles.dat can lead to other conflicts with others mods that also use particles.dat. Just saying! I eventually dropped using the smoke mod in favor of the "eye candy" of the splash effect mod as I didn't get the same thrill from the smoke mod.

I have done a same effect in another file (no overwriting materials.dat and particles.dat from another mod).

I Haven't made a "real" mod, because I have just copy the modified files from the original Genius mod from Skybaron. So I am just a copycat :-?.

But if you are interested I can send it to you...

I DL'd the adapted splash mod for FOTRSU 1.1 , and the 40mm AA guns on a Balao become silent, no sounds when firing them! Is there a fix for this?
