i use an software called fraps... is not free... but i remember that someone posted some free software also... i think is better to ask Otto.. he sendet me an PM with some links but i delete it... my PM box is full:)

1)How to use hydro with real navigation and realism 100%
2)How to find an ship course, speed, AOB etc only using hydro without having visual contact with the ship
3)How to hunt only with hydro in heavy fog days when is very dificult to have visual contact with hunted ship
4)How to sunk an ship even you are at 19 meters submerged (no visual with hunted ship) and using only the hydro and manual TDC in the Real navigation mode and ''NO MAP CONTACT'' - this methode can be used for fogy days also

Another question I have... How is the sonarman getting a range when you ask him to "estimate range to target"? Wasn't that impossible in real life? I know they can guess if its long range, medium range or close range but to get an accurate range reading wouldn't you need active (pinging) sonar?

Just trying to understand all the forces at work here. Thanks.

the fix that tdw made read from an cfg file the speed that the sonar guy report for you.. in sh5 the ping sonar it is not working... i know in real life they used the ping for estimate the distance and they used the rev engine chart to estimate the speed by hidro but this is not working also in sh5... so about me the sh5.exe patch is an compromise to simulate the sonar ping for range... the diference is that now the navigator estimation for range is to precise ... you can use or not.. it is up to you... i use this when i hunt in heavy fog days

Cool. I thought that was a Romanian accent. I really enjoyed my trip there. went in 2004. Botosani, Sibiu, Bucharest, Sulina, Brashov. Saw all the Dracula stuff. Very interesting.

One Question:

While using the realistic fuel setting why did you navigate to your Patrol Zone at maximum speed? It is a very inefficient speed for fuel consumption.

Perhaps because the PZ was fairly close to your base?

4 bearing method is still the only realistic method to use for those concerned about the realistic play. Pinging a convoy is like and open invitation to be killed. But the 4BM require time and patience.

Usually, when Im tracking a convoy I do it on a more personal way. Im just listening very careful and try to determine if the contact is closing or not and what type of sound is it.. a convoy, a single target, warships etc. Then I mark the bearing, surface and race in that direction. Every 15 minute I dive, stop engines and listen again and so on until I make a visual contact with the target. After that, things are a bit more easy.. its time to determine a precise bearing, speed and also plan an attack depending on the convoy size, escorts, weather etc.

i like to play realistic also and i am an patient person... but after this sh5.exe patch i have not the patience to use the 4 bearing again... i use this method from tutorial only to hunt in heavy fog day and to find an cource of an hydro spoted contact...

If you have these pieces of data, you set your sub up to be at a 90 degrees angle to the target's course and shoot when it crosses a fixed bearing. Usually 10 degrees to the right or left of your heading (depending on which direction its coming from). You set the TDC up much like stoianm shows here.

THere are many tutorials on this in the SH4 forums if anyone is interested. VEry effective for long range shots (with a visual on target) and very effective for sonar attacks but you should be closer to compensate for sonar inaccuracies.

You are correct. You are still limited with finding an accurate range but if you can find speed and course with 4bearings or by visual contact you can then submerge and use only sonar to carry out the attack using a constant bearing technique.

Here are some links. They are for SH4 but the principles are the same and work for SH5. Just make sure you don't have the periscope linked to the TDC or it will throw off your TDC data inputs.

The bottom-line is that if you can get speed and course by some other method while submerged (like 4 bearing method) you don't need an accurate range to carry out a Dick O'Kane attack. The 90 degree setup of your sub to the targets course cancels out the need for an accurate range.

And you don't need the four bearing. Just Speed and course. AOB sorts itself obviously if you know the course. You line up for a 90 degree shot, fire on your zero bearing and direct hit.

@TDW and the moders that are handy with the dds files:

it is posible to make the TDC dials more precise for the TDW interface please?... i mean only the ones for for AOB and BEARING and maybe a little much bigher:hmmm:?

EDIT: I just figured out why my 4th torpedo did not hit the target... i made an mistake when i wanted to put my heading at 90 degrees (my calculation was for around 45 degree heading but i used 41 by misteake... so i was not at 90 degree exactly on the covoy course)

Next level would be to quit using lock on target and pause game :)
Pls don't take it as criticism rather than an improvement. The most xp and pro guys in SH3 are using this and they don't really believe that is possible in SH5.

Make a 90 attack on a convoy without using any cheat like pause and lock on target and show them that you can be pro in SH5. And no mouse clicks, only voice command nor keyboard shortcuts. Play with your UI hidden.

thanks... i play my game using voice commands but i can not make an movie because i will have troubles if i will use the microfone in the same time... i do not pause my game when i play... i do this only in tutorials because it take my time to explain to people what i do... but you have an good ideea.... i will make an movie without explanation... only using voice commands... and no pauses and things like this... but i do not understand what you mean by not locking the target... if i do not lock the target i can not put data in manual tdc and i can not take range by stady... can you explain me what you mean by this please... and my next tutorial will be how to play like an pro sh5:D

I put a question about manual targeting in the SH5 TDC Tutorial thread but I don't think anyone has seen it. Here it is. Hoping someone can answer my question. I watched your tutorial on manual targeting but I still have trouble with AOB.

I'm used to SH4 which means I am used to the position keeper. Enter Uboat...no position keeper obviously. So what is the correct order of entering data into the TDC? I ask because every time I put my scope down ( to avoid detection) and raise it again to take a new bearing/range measurement, my AOB resets itself.

I've been doing this

1. Get target's speed through visual observations (using the 3min 15sec rule...mark target's position, wait 3 minutes and 15 seconds, mark target's position again, the distance traveled in meters corresponds to speed.)

2. Take bearing/range readings using stadimeter - enter them

3. Enter AOB (measure using navmap protractor tool).

4. Take one last range reading before firing (Note: I usually have to reset the AOB at this point because the last range/bearing reading seems to reset my AOB dial.

Am I doing something wrong?

Also, is the 3 minute, 15 second rule for taking speed measurements correct? In SH4 it was an even 3 minutes but when using meters as opposed to yards I believe it is 3:15.

No you are not doing nothing wrong... it is like an bug... after you use stadymeter the AOB is reset and is going back at the last locked value... i spoked about that with TDW and he will fix this soon:up:

Thanks. I'll try this new range method. As far as the 3 minute, 15 second rule, I've tried it in SH5 and it seems to work. If you can mark a targets position...wait 3min, 15sec...mark target's position again and then measure the distance between the two points. The first two number of the distance between the two points is your speed. For example, if the distance is 3,500 meters then your speed is 3.5knots. If the distance is 10,000 meters then the speed is 10knots.

Thxs for the PRO-with-RealNav-Vid. The voice-commanding is beautiful. The torpedo-hit animation was less pretty to look at. But the look of the burning and broken ship on the horizon was IMO quite realistic.

Stoianm, i'm still having problems with the AOB reseting when using the stadimeter. I know you said its a bug but I looked at some of the documentaiton in the NewUI mod and there is mention of a AOBFix that can be enabled to make sure the AOB doesn't reset every time you enter a new range with stadimeter. How do I enable this?

I also read through some posts from TDW in the NewUI forum where he talks about using the dials and entering the range and aob with the red button instead of using the stock XO box to enter data. If I use the AOB dial added by TDWs mod will that fix this problem?

It's too hard to reset the AOB after EVERY range entry so I'm pretty much only using the 90 degree fast attack (aka Dick O'Kane constant bearing) methods until I find a good way to fix this. These methods are good but not every tactical situation is suited to them.

I suppose I should post this in TDW's UI forum also but you are always so full of knowledge and experience about SH5 manual targeting.

TDW know the problem already ... not need to post on the UI thread ... and he will look at this problem but at the moment he has another ,,bigger fish to frie'' probably:DL... and i am doing like you ... because of that i am using the fast 90 most of the time... but you can use this trick to corect the problem:
1) take range
2) take AOB
3) mark the bearing corespondent for the AOB:

So basically you are "predicting" what a future AOB will be at a certain bearing and when the target passes that bearing you reset the AOB? Makes sense. I'll try that next time.

On a side note...I don't think depth soundings are very accurate. I did a test dive the other day in 100m of water (according to depth sounding). I set dive for 80m. At about 75m I hear a loud crunch....my sub hit the bottom. I think the depth readings are actually about 25m more than they really are. Anyone else confirm this?

This AOB will only work if your are at 90deg to target heading.
At 85deg the error may be small and torps will still hit if you are close enough.
The further away from 90deg to the target heading you are, the more error will be in this method.

Yep. This is true. But that's why the constant bearing method of Dick O'Kane/Fast Attack is so useful. You can adjust the AOB at the last moment if necessary.

yes... and also because the range is not important if you choose to hit at 90 degree... and the torpedo damage is maxim.. because of the perpendicular angle... and because you can hit 3-4 ships in same time in the same column when you hunt an convoy.. if you are at 90 degree you have some place left for small erorrs also

No... for this one i forgot to change these settings... you saw i run at tc128 in travel mode (yours settings is max 32)... i forgot the travel mode by misteaken... i do not advice to use travel mode when search an patrol area... and when i play SH5 usually i use the sober settings.. wich are the best settings in my opinion if you want to play realistic

I have rewritten Trevally's script on the search patrol to run at a higher TC value...kind of get sick of pressing the TC button...I'm wondering if anyone knows if you can put a condition in that puts the TC back to 1 if a sound or visual contact is spotted. Or if running at a higher TC whilst issuing commands to the sub to dive etc has an adverse affect. I've noticed if I'm running any higher than TC16 the boat will not change course etc. I probably need to do a bit more testing....even if it dropped down to TC8 to perform the commands and then back up to 1024 once the sweep and surface commands have been set it would be better.

I guess my main question is if there is a way to goto TC1 if something is spotted. But not for every message on the status page :)

He He... he is not empty 100%.. i go to swim in winter because i like the olimpic piscine..
i like the voice recog mod very much... MiTon will release soon a new version where you will be able to send aob and speed to tdc and also he will add a lot of new commands... but even like now i use my mouse and my keybord just a bit and i use just a bit ploting.. i play most of the time only by visual when i do my finnal attack ... like in real life.. navigator can not see outside...time is short and you need to find solutions fast... only you can see by scope and you give orders for everybody.... make me feel like in the WWII time:DL... btw i like your mods... special the one with emblems and the one with flags... nice work:up:

Some good news... i know that you do nice mods... so maybe it is the time to return to sh5.. in the mean time... TDW and all the moders from here puted SH5 almoust in the water line:DL.. if you will watch some of my tutorials you will see that we need only maybe more ships, and a complex campaign mod ... zedi extended the last campaign untill 1954... but i understood that in olders SH series the campaigns were more immersive... and also few little things to be fixed... but even like now sh5 it is a playable game... here is the mod that you liked:

Yes the campaigns and the extra ships are the only things holding me back right now. Unfortunately I don't know how to mod these things so I can only wait until someone else can do it.

Your videos helped me a lot to see that SH5 has reached the point where it can be played very well. Real Navigation too is interesting, I tried it a little yesterday because of your tutorial video, it adds a whole new level to the sim.

(Most reference 4XX card idles are from 30c to 40c depending on the circumstances, 54º is too much even for very low rpm idle settings)

No... i have not like that in idle... when i started my tutorial i just closed the sh5... in the room where is my computer is hot... because i am like now in hollyday at my parents place in the mountains.. so because outside is cold... in the room is hot from the cheminee... and the computer has a little case.. not well ventilated... it is my mother old computer

under load my card has been running at 100 c LOL....off load it runs about 70 c....mine is a 5700 HD but i have it overclocked...and its not the best ventalated....

i see... the stormys sound mod it is an complilations of sounds that use like base the das boot.. so maybe you use one of the stand allone sound mod that he use in his collection... for example after you hit a ship with a torpedo you hear the sound of the crew that celebrate and the XO that tell them to not make noise?

New to me was the ship propeller sound in the hydrophone ... I liked it

I want to learn about intercepting the convoy with radio contact.
Ok:

1) it is very important to start your ploting to intercept the contact ASAP after you will receive the radio contact
2) after i received the contact - the navigator will report me the: convoy speed, convoy course, the convoy scope-bearing (related to our position) and also the range between us and the convoy
3) plot these information on the map and you will obtain the convoy position on the map
4) draw with the proractor an angle from UBOAT-CONVOY-CONVOY COURSE
5) keep in your mind this parameter 3.33
6) if the range between us and convoy it is for example 600 km... make like this: multiplication factor= MF

MF = (range/100)*3.33... in our case MF = 600/100*3.33 = 20

7) We supouse the speed of the convoy it is 10 knots

MARK 1 = convoy speed*MF = 10*20 = 200 km

put MARK 1 at 200 km starting from the convoy position and going 200 km on the convoy course

8) Choose a speed that you want to travel to intercept the convoy... let say we choose 15 knots

uboat speed*MF = 15*20 = 300 km

9) take the compas and draw a distance of 300 starting from MARK 1 ... the circle will intersect the line between uboat and convoy... MARK 2

10) Take the proractor and draw an angle from MARK 1 - MARK 2 - CONVOY

11) Let say that angle is 40 degrees

12) take the proractor and make the same 40 degres angle from CONVOY - UBOAT - AND GO to intersect the convoy cource line
14) MARK 3 where the proractor line intersect the course convoy line... this is the point where you will intercept the convoy if you will run at 15 knots

15) measure the distance from your UBOAT and the MARK 3 - lets say it is 180 km (i choosed all numbers random... do not try to match those numbers)... so if we run 15 knots for 180 km wee need around 6 hours and 30 minutes

16) lets say your time it is 12 am

17) order to your uboat to go in the MARK 3 direction and order a speed of 15 knots... mean that after 6hours and 30 min you will be in the same point with the convoy... so this will be at 6 and 30 minutes pm

18) order a speed more than 15 knots.. lets say 16 .. or 16.5 knots... in this way you will be 1 hour or more before the convoy will be in that point... prepare you for an fast 90 attack and wait for the convoy... you can search with the hydro in mean time... if the convoy will not change course in mean time he is like an mouse in a trap:up:

IO learned this methode from Kylania... here you have his explanation... with his explanation, my tutorial and this writting i thing everything is clear:

I'm not entirely happy with the intercept image, but since I made it at 5am I won't worry too much about it, but here's how I intercepted a convoy last night. This is with map contacts off, so no ghost to follow for me.

Here you see the first contact report, at 05:26 about a large convoy 614km away, moving towards me at 13kts. What you don't see is that at the time I started this plot it was already 05:45, so I should have taken that into account.

Next comes the big messy picture!

Step 1: I use the protractor to draw from my u-boat to the contact, then out along it's path of travel. When I did this, I made three mistakes. First was waiting so long to start it, second was not bringing the line out far enough and third was not getting the angle of travel perfect.

Step 2: I draw a line from the contact out along it's direction of travel according to it's speed. Since it's traveling at 13kts and was 600km+ away, I picked a multiplier of 20, meaning the line I drew was 260 (13 x 20) km long. If we were closer I might have picked a multiplier of .5 or 2 or something to plot a line 6.5 or 26km long, depending.

Step 3: I use the compass to draw a circle from the end point of the line I drew in step 2 which is equal to my speed (13.6) times the multiplier I used before, which would be a circle with a radius of 272 km.

Step 4: I find the point where the circle crosses the original bearing to the contact, the first protractor line I drew. I measure the angle from the end point of step 2 to the meeting point of bearing and circle then towards the contact. In this case you can kinda see it's 32 degrees.

Step 5: I now take that 32 degrees angle and measuring from the line towards the contact, to my u-boat, then towards the path of travel of the contact and draw out the 32 angle line till it crosses the travel line. This is where I made another mistake, since the original protractor I hadn't drawn out long enough, so I had to use a ruler to make it longer. That's the extra 170km line there.

Step 6: The point where the step 5 angle and the step 2 course lines meet is where I'll intercept. I'll place my waypoint at that point and head towards it at my current speed. It's Mark 1 in that image.

So now I'm chugging along towards the intercept point. I draw a 30km circle around the point to represent basically the hydrophone range around the spot where I should be able to hear the convoy.

What's this!? At 17:28 I get a hydrophone contact from my sonarman saying he hears something coming from the general direction of where the convoy should be. But as you can see I'm still some 80km or so away from the intercept point!

In order to cheat a little I draw out a 50 degree angle from the front of my boat to the left (360 - 310 contact bearing = 50 degrees port) and send my external camera to see what's there. :oops::cool:;)

And there it is! The beautiful, battleship escorted giant convoy! Turns out it was only traveling at 9kts by the time I reached it (which is why I met it ahead and past it rather than right on) and also changed course a bit too I think. It's changes like that which can cause you to miss convoys a lot, especially at ranges of 600km+ like this one was.

So, took me 12 hours or so to intercept it, and I almost missed it, but I got close enough to be able to intercept and sink 4 ships from it!

You do not need real nav to play like this...

1)unninstall the TDW UIs
2)to have course and range reported go in the option.py and search for these lines:

The movie was made at Hollywood my friend... and it is a method.. called the circle method... some writters use this method in their novells... you start the story in a place...you do the middle part and you end the story in the same place where you started... you see... that was the ideea... to make movies is not so simple... and also to work with actors like sober (you can easy supouse by his name how is he) ... and my navigator sabotate my often... he has some english - scotish roots... but i am happy that you liked:DL

Hi stoianm,

I just want to say a massive thank you for your video tutorials. Whilst i'm not new to SH series as I still play SH3 with GWX. I rushed out a bought SH5 on its release thinking it would be the next big thing in the series and was like many very disappointed. So it got uninstalled about 6 months after release and has sat on my shelf since.

Then last night I was going through you tube for uboat video and stumbled on your tutorial video's. After watching a couple of the clips I have decided now is probably a good time to give SH5 another shot. Looks like the modding teams have once again tried there darn hardest to make SH5 a simulation, I love that new UI and how customizable it all is, and to top it off your videos are like icing on the cake hehe. In the world of computer gaming/simulation nothing says more than a good video clearly explaining how and why stuff should be done.

A big thank you from me. I'm going to spend my day off today setting up SH5 with a few mods and see what happens.

maybe.... when you want to use the attack disk?... to intercept a convoy?

just to know how to use it...not sure what it could be used for but least then i would know all the different things of the sub....and if it would help with plotting for intercept then ya...

I think it's for calculating AOB because it's got a button in the middle that links it to the TDC.

With the the Attack disck you can:

1: Determine the fastest course to intercept a reported contact

2: Determine a course and speed to waylay a reported contact

3: Determine the true course of a target from bearing and angle on the bow

4: Determine the angle on the bow of a target from bearing and course

5: Determine the angle on the bow of a target from its aspect ratio

6: Determine the range of a target from its mast height

7: Determine the speed of a target by plotting its position over time

8: Determine the speed of a target from its length

9: Determine the speed of a target with constant relative bearing

10: Determine the speed of a target with a changing relative bearing

11: Determine the speed of a target with two bearing and range observations

12: Determine the time for a target to reach a future bearing

13: Determine a perpendicular attack course to a target

14: Determine the distance to the track of a target

15: Determine an optimum speed for attack position

16: Determine the lead angle for a perpendicular attack with 0° gyro angle

17: Determine the torpedo gyro angle

18: Determine the torpedo run time

I have boths installed... but i do not use because i do not like to alt - tab the game... the hydrophone traker was good tool when the 4 bearing method was released first time... there were a lot of ploting... but the new 4 and improuved bearing method is very simple.. you do not need anymore the hydrophone traker:up:

yes ... i use fraps for video in game and after that i use Windows live movie maker to compact all pieces in one... and after that i use the StaxRip to encode... is transform them in mkv file (half of the dimension that was before - keeping a good cality) and if you want to put on youtube after you can use ''mkvmerge GUI'' to split in parts no bigger than 15 minutes

Hey fantastic tutorials, very helpful..just want to ask a question about the dad boot sh5 movie, what sound mod was being used in it? Really liked the realistic sounds of the periscope rotating and the torpedoes firing etc..can someone please tell me the sound mod used in it?

The only one thing I can't seem to figure out is in your videos when you use the map tools like the protractor and the ruler you have a nice big round bearing wheel surrounding the pointer, this makes it nice and easy to read bearings when using the ruler etc.

However on my map with the tool helper turned on I do get a round bearing wheel around my ruler point etc but it's a lot smaller than your video one and quite a bit harder to read.

Any ideas? or is there an option I missed somewhere?

This is much the same as the RAOBF speed finding method but built into the clock. This is a fantastic method. Aob does not matter as it will always take a ship the same time to move through its own length no matter what the angle.

This will be my new method of choice for finding speed:up:

It is like you have not nothing installed in C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\data\Automation ... can you enter in that path... you have some files there? try this:

1) unninstall trevally autoscripts v0.5 and delete
2) redownload the trevally autoscripts v0.5 and reinstall .... see if is working

if not maybe tdw or trevally will have an ideea why you not have those files there... but first try what i sugested to you

Run the DbgView app (\data\Applications) before running the game. It should shed some light on what's going on/not going on.

You went straight from message received and navigator giving you a bearing etc.....how did you get the navigator to provide a bearing to the radio contact? not to mention the other info he provided?

This is probably a noobish question but i don't know how you got the navigator to provide that contact information.

Plus, the radio reports I usually receive have only a vague speed and course for the contact, are there specific ones with better contact information?

usualy if a convoy is heading away from me and is at a bad angle and distance i do not folow him... if is in a good position to intercept i just plot the normal interception and i increase a bit the speed to arive before him in that spot

Yes i mean in scope mod, for example around your attack scope it seems its made of rubber, and the uzo view is different, more roundish.

depends where you are on map.... german ships you have very small chances to have... if is a neutral ... than is not so big deal... usually 4 bearing you use on heavy fog
