I think he means how does he get, for example, hydrophone operator to report the sound contact on pressing "Z", as in your tutorials.

Hi man
I tried to send a pm awhile ago but i wasn't sure it got away so apologies if i spam you.
First of Thank you for your awesome videos for sh5!
I've learned so much thanks to you! Big thumbs up!
1. How do you get your submarine always visible on your TAI map with Real navigation mod enabled? I find it easier to use then a "X"
2. I use TDW's patch to make the colour scheme for the map tools but haven't found a good solution between clutter and readability.
Which do you use? equatool/map mod/colour scheme?

how to turn on the Polish command, orders, etc.
There is a polish menu.txt in the NewUIsTDC 6.8.0 package.
Dials, MODS, Text are the directories, search the Text folder for folder "Polish" and copy the menu.txt into SilentHunter5/MODS/NewUIs_TDC_6_8_0_TheDarkWraith/data/Menu.
Now enable the NewUIs mod.

Hi stoianm!
I learned it from superb tutorials very much. :salute:
I have a little question. How you to scroll the compass in this tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F8qe__C2gg&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
at 3:40 min ?
I try any technique, (my first tip was the mouse wheel,) but doesn't do it. I use with S3Style, and without realnav now (this will be the my next step). I must be use the the S5Enhanced style? (Not working with S3style?) Or working only with the real navigation? Or any other method for accurate setting the compass?
Thanks!
It should work with TDW-UI-mod v6.7.0 or higher, enhanced SH5-UI and mousewheel or CTRL+mousewheel (or SHIFT+mousewheel?)
But im not sure because for quite some time in my game the mousewheel-input does not work either
sirbum69
11-18-11, 07:24 AM
yes scrolling your mousewheel does what you are asking, I currently use version 6.8 and wheel works just fine.
on the very right of the heading bar is a little circle. Click on that and then try to see if it works for you. that little button changes the heading bar from clicking to heading to not clicking to heading. that should fix your problem
Hi!
Very thanks!
I use TDW UI 6.8. Working only S5Enhanced mode? I would liked to use the S3Style mode, if it possible...
Update:
Working great! Thanks everybody!

I just picked up SHV for the very first time having no prior experience playing any sub sims, and I find your tutorials to be supremely useful.
I thought since I am new I would start the game on unrealistic easy mode, but your tutorials are helping me prowl the seas on 100% realism :arrgh!:

Stoianm,

Great videos, I have learned a lot form them. Sank my first convoy last night on 100% reality with Real Nav Mod.
Great videos Sir ;) I learnt a lot from them.
I have two questions, both about 4 bearing method.
1. Are there any mininum bearing requirements when I can use this method ? Most of time I find contacts coming from behind me. I haven't met any contacts yet which could be in perfect tracking positions like on your video. Another thing is that most of times they move like this, example: first bearing 250, second one 256 ... and I don't know what should I do now. Is there a fast method to find out how I should prepare my sub to start tracking like on your video ?
2. During seting up scope (speed, range, aob etc) when I move my scope to reset gyroangle my AoB changes too when on your video it doesn't ... what I do wrong ?
Thank you
PS Sorry for my english, it's not my first language

Thanks for the videos. Lets see if i can survive "real navigation"
. All you have to do is to hit a button to get your position (+- some limited error). This 'Real navigation'-Mod is truely a joke comparing to a true navigation in WWII.

I would say yes, the realism mods
A) do the sim justice with how it was supposed to be
and
B) Are worlds away from stock, you get used to stock and play with realism mods on, its gonna be just as steep of a learning curve.

Thanks for these great videos! After succeeding with many of Trevally's in game tutorials, I tried the RAOBF one and felt completely overwhelmed. It just broke my brain! But after watching your videos a few times I've just sunk my first ship with it! It was incredibly cool to do it all with no map contacts. Very rewarding. So thanks again!

All the ''pics'' that you moved normally you must to be able to move back.. they are draggable. If you not succed with that.. than unninstall and reinstall again the mod.:)

Finally, i got to try Miton's speech recognition new ui 0.4.1 (english), You are right!! it feels like you ARE the Capt. Heinrich Lehmann!! (where is the guy that said it was a hoax in youtube now, eh? :haha:
I can say the funniest command like "SILENT!!!"
from which I imitated you from your vid... boy i went... :rotfl2:
quick question, what is the best range in your opinion to calculate a solution when using RAOFB for AOB, Range and U jagd chronometer (right click the watch to change it to chronometer) to calculate speed, in concerning error percentage?
Thank you SO MUCH, Sir ,for your contribution and hard work!!

I had small errors around 2 km.... the smaller is the range than the errors are smallers.. usually i make 2 time calculations.. first i make when the ship/convoy is around 4-6 km, then i try to put myself for a fast 90 degree atack and i make another calculation when the ship is around 2 km range.. i make some corections if my first calculation had big errors and after that i fire my torps

Stoianm, hi. I was wondering if you could help me with something. I've been following your tutorials, but now I'm stuck. Since I got to the "How to intercept an convoy received by radio from BDU in SH5" I found that my navigator doesn't calculate the position, bearing, distance, etc. to the contact that has been reported (So I'm left with only the radio report's information) and since I'm a student I have no idea on how to proceed.
I have the mods you file as a requirement for the tutorials, even a few extra mods I've taken out of your mods list, mind you not =).
So, please, help. Thank you!.

Stoianm, it's one way for you to see how some of us made our living. ;) I used to go up thru Montreal 2 or 3 times a week to get to the GM Plant in St. Therese. And other times to deliver to the grocery warehouses up there. That was not fun at all. :nope: And other times to load bunker oil up on Notra Dame at Ultramar and Oil Co to bring back to the States. It's dam cold out there next to the St. Lawrence this time of year. :yep: I don't miss driving the big rigs at all.
Back in the 80s and early 90s I didn't have a computer to play with. Truckin was my fun.

I don't hit the ship in this tutorial even if i but exact same data in TDC that is shown in tutorial (Hog is. Bearing 221. Range 1080. Speed 0. AOB -51.)
My torpedo goes way off front of the target. Is this because ship is too far behind of me or is this some bug?

For the life of me I still can't figure out auto TDC. I have a campaign save where I have a Polish destroyer dead in my sights, 600m away 90 degrees off the bow, I'm at all stop with a 3 torpedo salvo ready to go. No matter what I do the torpedoes go where the destroyer is when I target it, not where it will be.
Since there's no way I am ready for manual TDC at this stage this is incredibly frustrating. Does anyone have any tips? All I'm doing is locking and unlocking the ship, then putting my periscope on the part of the ship I want to hit as it says in the video for auto TDC.

Are your torpedo tube doors open prior to pushing the "Fire!" button?
Yes, all are open, speed set to fast, all torpedoes are of the same type.
Does telling the torpedo officer person (apologies for my ignorance of the proper title) to calculate a firing solution have anything to do with the problem?

Hi hk
Post #146 Auto TDC Targeting Without Using 3 Circles > Updated Pictorial (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2248685&postcount=146)
Peter
Thank you! I'll give that a try. Will it work on my mid-patrol save or should I start over from the bunker save?

Hi hk
My tutorial will show you how to understand what you need to do by showing you pictures with explanations.
Once you understand the basics you can put into practice on your next target.
Peter
That worked really well, thanks! Got a destroyer, minesweeper, and 3 freighters. Heading to Kiel!

Very instructive videos, congrats
I find the 'Intercepting convoys' and the 'Multiplication Factor' very helpful, it can be used for best interception of *any* target that is further away.
For anyone interested, I have made my personal written version of this vid, it's complex stuff to write down, but once you get it you will never use a different method I think :)
Here it is:
----------------------------------------------------------
Fastest interception of a target
*************************
Let's say that the BDU has transmitted to you the position, heading and speed of a convoy, or: you already know this data of a target which is far away.
Question:
Which heading do you have to take at a set speed to intercept the target as fast as possible?
Lets see this question in a grafic:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - *A
- - - B*- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - - -*C - - - - - - - - - -
You are at point C. A ship or convoy is moving from A to B and you know its speed.
The most secure method to intercept the target is to head perpendicular to the target's heading, you will never be wrong by doing so but this will most likely not be the fastest interception, you will arrive early and need to wait for the target, just imagine that point A is very far on the right and then you'll understand that there must be a better interception course more at the right of the perpendicular heading.
Now, you could do some guessing work and draw lines with the ruler and find out that if you head in a specific direction and speed for a specific time, then the target would have moved a specific distance along the AB heading and you can see if you are close enough. Then you eventually repeat the drawings to improve the solution, however, this is not a precise method to use and it will not avoid you to do some calculations either.
A good approximation method is done with the help of the...
Multiplication Factor Formula, or Multiplication Factor called MF.
MF = [(Distance between you and target) / 100] x 3.33
The procedure is as follows:
a)
You plot the heading line of your target and calculate the MF in your situation.
In your head, take 3 times the target distance, add one third of target distance, divide by 100.
b)
You multiply the target's speed with MF...
MF x (target speed) = MF1
No need to be accurate to the decimals, just make a good rounding. (2,86 = 3; 1,44 = 1 + 1/2 etc.)
You take this value and mark it on the target's heading line starting from target's initial position. (Mark 1).
c)
You multiply your desired interception speed with MF...
MF x (Your interception speed) = MF2
and you draw a circle from Mark 1 with a radius of MF2.
Now you take note and mark the intersection of the circle with your bearing to the target (Mark 2).
d)
With the protractor, You measure the angle at Mark 2 between the target's position and Mark 1.
This plotted angle is your solution and will tell you how much you have to deviate from the target's bearing and head to that course, this will be the exact interception course to intercept the target as fast as possible at that specific speed.
For better visualisation, you can draw the exact same angle at your ship position, the angle going from the bearing to the target towards the heading line, the angle amount being the same than the angle at Mark 2, all lines being parallel.
Final note:
This approximation method comes close to the exact calculation which would require a nasty sinus/cosinus math function with changing triangles to solve, and which would require too much time to be useful even with a calculator.
All this explanation above sounds very complex (especially the final point d), but try these steps more times and you find the procedure very easy, fast and accurate for intercepting far away targets. Once you get used to it you won't read here again...
This MF method will give the shortest ETA on target, so you will be able to modify your heading - or your speed - in order to meet the target at a specific time, for example at sunset or sunrise for best weapon usage and less chance to be detected. You will find it easy to make these corrections once you have plotted the initial drawings, especially because in the SH series you can adjust the circles and lines without re-plotting them from zero.
And finally, at the beginning I said: "Fastest interception of a target". Doesn't it remind you of something, he? Yes: a TORPEDO...

Also, change Km's to Nautical Miles and use the SDT equation.
Then you know how long it will take and if it is at all worth it to deviate from your course.
1Nm = 1.852 Km
