* Description: Alternative Cursors and KM Map Tools v 2 for Silent Hunter 5

* Author: gap

* About this mod:
I always thought that the ugly pointers used in vanilla game are anti-immersive, not looking like one would expect from a WWII interface. This small mod addresses the problem, by replacing the stock cursors with new ones, more in tune with the main UI mods released for the game so far. Moreover, it replaces the small vanilla map tools with bigger ones, with 1 deg apart marks, calibrated for high precision plotting.

* Mod features:
- Base Mod: contains the core files with a default set of cursors and map tools; compatible with the main SH5 UI mods.
- Alternate Tool Graphics: for different plotting tools styles. Available in three alternative versions: Wooden Handle (featuring a set of compass, ruler and protractor advanced tools and NewUI’s double compass with wooden handles); No Markings (all the tools without markings of any sort, for cleaner look); Wooden Handle, No Markings (a merge of the above optional mods).
- Shadowed Cursors: makes default cursors to cast 2D shadows, for better legibility against any background.
- Alternate Dialog Cursors: replaces the speech balloon-shaped pointers, used in game for denoting interaction with crew members and officers in bunker, with hand-shaped ones. Available in two alternative versions: Default (for non-shadowed hand-shaped cursors) and Shadowed (with shadowed hand-shaped dialog cursors, better used together with the ‘Shadowed Cursors’ optional mod).
- EQuaTool patches: should you like to use this mod without giving up the EQuaTool plotting tools, this set of optional mods provides compatibility with various versions of the aforementioned mod, including different combinations of its core and add-on mods.

* Changelog:
> v 2.0:
­ - ensured compatibility of the base mod with the main SH5 UI mods (see the ‘Compatibility’ section below for details);
­ - added etheberge’s No Damn Bubbles, No Damn Halo Mod - No Dialog Indicator to the main mod;
­ - added several new ‘move’, ‘drag’ and ‘dialog’ pointers that were previously sharing the same textures;
­ - hue, saturation and luminosity of all the pointers further enhanced, for better look in game;
­ - changed basic tool cursor with new ones, with smaller tool miniatures;
­ - replaced the big Nazi markings, displayed on some advanced tools, with smaller and more historically correct KriegsMarine markings and historical ‘Faber-Castell’ markings;
­ - added KriegsMarine markings to the version of the nomograph featured in NewUIs;
­ - added Alternate Tool Graphics add-on mods for different advanced tool styles;
­ - added Shadowed Cursors add-on mod;
­ - added Alternate Dialog Cursors add-on mods;
­ - added EQuaTool patches for compatibility with the homonymous mod.

­ - fixed a bug with basic compass tool, caused by wrong offsets; now the plotted line is drawn starting from the tool’s crosshair as it was supposed;
­ - changed basic course plotting tool texture with a different texture featured in version 1.0 (pencil + flag) but actually not used;
­ - changed hue and saturation of drag icon, to match better the color of other pointers.

> v 1.0 first release:
­ - changed pointer, drag and resize cursors with new hand style cursors, both in main menu and game interface;
­ - changed basic tools cursors to follow the style of big map tools icons coming with vanilla game and used by “IO StrategicMap” and several UI mods;
­ - changed extended map tools graphics by using Multiple UIs compass tool as base (changed Kriegsmarine historical emblems; added 1 deg. and cardinal points marks, plus some minor touches).

* Compatibility:
- Compatible with the stock UI and with NewUIs with TDC (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=1332669#post1332669), CSP Magui Interface (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=1619743#post1619743) and UI-Boat (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=1459155#post1459155) custom UIs.
- Compatible with any EQuaTool (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=1496255#post1496255) version, by means of a set of compatibility patches included in the package (see below for instructions).

* Known bugs:
- When moving the cursor on top of a button or menu item, cursor is overlapping slightly with relative tooltip texts.
- Feel free to report any other issue that might be related with this mod in its dedicated thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=1621025#post1621025).

* Installation:
- Install JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=3951) if you have not done it yet, and configure it to the SH5 installation path;
- open the <Alternative Cursors and KM Map Tools v 2> package using WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm) or 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/download.html);
- drop the folder named <gap - Alternative Cursors & KM Map Tools v2 - 1. Base Mod> into the <MODS> folder (inside the main SH5 directory);
- enable the mod within JSGME, on top of any custom UI you are using;
- optional: follow the same steps for enabling add-on mods numbered from 2 to 4 you may want to use, taking care to enable them in the same order suggested by their progressive numbers. Sub-mods with the same number are alternative version of the same mod (only one of them should be enabled);
- optional: enable any reasonable combination of EquaTool’s mods and add-on mods after the base and add-on mods contained in this package, and enable on top of them all the appropriate patch from the list of available patches (numbered from 5.a to 5.n). Their names should be self explanatory on EquaTool’s mods and add-on mods that they should be used with.

I don't have these mods installed, but I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be so. The one part I think is working only with TDW UIs, is the real/relative bearing tool (the double compass) but I may be wrong. I'll have a look at Ui-Boat in order to give a proper reply

Nice TheDarkWraith! I will bemore than glad to contribute even in minimal part to your UI, by releasing these stuffs as an add-on for it:salute:. Do you think we could release them together with the final version of NewUIs 6.4.0?

All I've to do until that date, is asking for permission by Urbijan (author of 2 of the hand shaped cursors) and writing a readme with full credits to original authors. By the way: is the compass tool I used as base for my reworks your own creation, or rather it was provided by someone else?

Nevertheless, right now I am sending to you a beta version for testing and suggestions, if you ever get time to provide me with them. I am open to any tip can make my alternative tools and cursors cleaner, more accurate, or just more in tune with your UI.

As for the other subsim friends who showed interest, I ask you to keep patient for a short while, until the public release :)

so, what do exactly bothers you about mouse cursor's size? Maybe I should reduce it, or at least rotate it a bit, because I think it is overlapping shortcut labels, making difficult to read their first word. It was something I wanted to correct before release, but I forgot to do so. Another fix could be changing the labels offset. I could ask TDW how to do it, if this is your problem. :)

As for the eraser and other basic maptools cursors, I made them quite big on purpose, because I wanted to keep the same size as the big map tools shortcuts. I think it is cool to see them desappearing from the bottom right map corner and reappear as pointers of same shape and size on the center of the map!

if you're using TDW UIs, there's an option for enabling them in TheDarkWraithUserOptions.py.
Look for this row...

# this will add support for the IO Strategic Map mod by Obelix
# change below to either True or False
MapToolsAsObjects = False

...and change its value to True.
They will show also with no IO Strategic Map enabled. ;)

mmm... weird, my maptools and EQUAtools share the usage of custom size .tga files instead of .dds files, but if that was the problem it would show with any tool and cursor, not only with compass. :hmmm: Can you post a screenshot? Anyone having the same problem?

Why are the nazi gaps (german black addlers) looking at the different directions?

this small incostintency belonged to an early version of my tools. It got fixed before the final release, but I forgot to update the screenshots. ;)

No, not an mistake, because we can have in sh5 .tga files, when all .dds files are disabled. And in this MOD the .dds files are disabled by .dds "Dummy-Files", so that .tga format files work !

Is it possible, that another MOD the file "Mouse.cfg" from this MOD overrides? Please check this in your Install-Order ! When yes, you have the solution for the problem !

Okay,
before release I had tested my mod with the latest reaper7 UI mod (v. 3.10) and everything seemed fine. Honestly I didn't care about backward compatibility, as I didn't know that some people are still using v. 2.2.
I will carry my tests with it and IO strategic map 3.1 and I will see what can be done.

If your mod works well with the new versionof reaper7´UI mod, then repair nothing.
Waiting at the end of patrol in the bunker and then I want to try new verion 3.1 with the fix of Cimmaron tanker.

I had a look to the issue reported by Josef.
It was an error in the ini file with compass tool offsets. My fault, not a compatibility issue with UI-Boat! :doh:
Weird no one (including me) noticed the mistake before. I will release a fix for it later today, together with some improvements.

Version 1.1 of the mod packed and released. It features mostly minor touches and fixes for bugs present in the first release.

Fot the next version I plan to add an optional mod for reducing the size of basic maptools (the ones in use when tool helper is closed), together with their omologue shown on the bottom left corner of the navigation map. The latter addition is something that was implemented by Reaper7 in his UI, but not featured by TDW New UI's as far as I know.

For doing so, I'll have to edit zone settings in the relative .ini file, something that I never did before, so contribution by anyone, especiallu UI modders like Reaper, Obelix, or TheDarkWraith is very wellcome.

But before I disturb the guru's :D, I wish to know if anyone is interested to this addition. Let my know about it (or any other suggestion/complaint/criticism/etc.) by leaving some lines on this thread.

Time to revamp this little mod of mine (I think it was my first SH5 mod ever, by the way). :yep:

I have already reworked most of its textures, and made some adjustements for compatibility with the main SH5 UI mods and with EQuaTool. Before release I need for beta testers in order to make sure that everything is in place and looking good. More specifically, I am looking for someone who can test it with Magui, with UI-Boat (in case anyone is still using the latter) and/or with a random combination of them with EQuaTool.

Anyone interested, please drop me a message on this thread, and I will send you a link to the mod. :salute:

doesnt not mater witch 1 mod use when u place the ruler will strat to draw your line not from the midle will draw from side
this is only by the ruler other one works great ( compas, protractor )

I suppose this is happening with the "advanced" ruler (the big one). But is it with Magui? Have you enabled any of my optional mods besides the main mod? From which side the tool starts drawing?

the tool strat drawing from left side bottom ... but i just found another thing all your files are .tga and magui have all his file in .dds
that could be a problem ?

Bottom left side you say...Does the tool start drawing right from the corner, or from a point halfway between the center and the corner? What about your mod list?

but i just found another thing all your files are .tga and magui have all his file in .dds
that could be a problem ?

Is the tool drawn correctly on screen? SH5 can also use tga files, if it finds them in the correct folder. Dds format compression is not really needed for 2D graphics. :yep:

I am also curious to listen to your remarks on the quality of the textures used. How good they are matching the rest of the UI, and how intuitive is the meaning of icons used as pointers? Any suggestions to improve them :)

What is the use of this additional protractor? Currently, all my tools are the same size as EQuaTool medium size style and were calibrated for high precision, with 1 deg apart scale marks. They should be accurate enough for any gaming purpose. I could design bigger tools, but it would take relatively long. Maybe for the next release. In the meanwhile you can make Magui's custom protractor bigger by replacing my texture (Gui/Magui Maptools path) with EquaTool's large style texture :up:

I don't know what this "select combat units pencil" is. Where do you select it? :06:

Anyway the marker should appear as a black "X" mark when map tools are expanded and as red pencil with a red "+" mark when map tools are unexpanded. See the scheme at post #44 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2079701&postcount=44) for a preview of them. This is with stock and TDW's UIs. Does it work the same in MaGui? :hmm2:

According to USN Submarine Periscope Manual (June 1946) (http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/pscope/chap2.htm), the most common and worst failure that scope optics were subject to (besides breaking apart of course), was water moisture getting in the tube and condensing on the internal faces of its lenses. It was called "internal fogging" and it resulted in the field becoming "clouded" or, in the worst cases, totally obscured, especially at low temperatures. Its elimination involved the use of a vacuum pump and a general overhaul that could be performed only by specialized personnel, and preferably ashore. :yep:

It would be cool if a patch by TDW could switch the usage of alternative foggy periscope masks, is any of our scopes gets damaged...

You are talking about 'fogging' or 'clouded' lenses and whole optics.. but as I saw in the screen, I saw really dirty and not fogging lens.. :)

And yes, it would be a cool feature if masks will change after damage..

If you remember, I have only 2 Gb RAM and one unit (1 Gb) is working incorrectly now..

I'm waiting for help from my friends and acquaintances now, because of RL reason I'm not able to buy anything by myself.. I saw cash about two years ago :) :shifty:.. (too expensive medical treatment after an accident and so on.. unfortunately)

I'm planning (maybe daydreaming) now to increase RAM up to 8 Gb.. but unfortunately my MB has DDR2 slots only and DDR2 is a bit expensive now in comparison with DDR3 :-?..
