I was wondering if it would be ok to release the ship name list file found in SHC to an outside project. It's a 4x turn based strategy game, set in a galactic type setting.

http://www.freeorion.org/

It's all open source work, so I was hoping it would be ok to let them use the list to help populate their list of ship names. I think it would be really neat to see historically accurate ship names transferred into a Sci-Fi setting, as a continued Homage to the efforts of the ships and their crews.

I would like the ok from the guys that worked on the list, so I don't step on any toes.

Ship lists compiled by Observer, bigboywooly, JScones, Sailor Steve and AG124.
Cargo and Crew Range information by Sailor Steve, bigboywooly and iambecomelife.

Thanks for the effort there guys!

Better ask Sailor Steve - he is the main brains behind it.

Best ask JScones, as technically it's his. For my part I have no objections. It's just a list of historic names.

OTOH, I recall a space game I played years ago, in which the guy running one side used British battleship names, but he also used the ones they never would:

Incontinent
Incorrigible
Inflammable
Inconcievable
Intransigent
Incoherent
Inviolable
Impossible
Impractical
Importune
Impotent

And my favorite real name of all time: The insect-class gunboat HMS Cockchafer.

Good stuff... :haha:

"Don't look now, but here comes the HMS Impotent!"

Doesn't quite strike fear in the heart I guess....

PS. Reminds me of something I read a while back:

The Renown class

"The two ships were HMS Renown, and HMS Repulse. A third ship, Resistance, was cancelled before construction started. They were the world's largest capital ships upon completion, until the commissioning of HMS Hood. The ships were notorious maintenance hogs and widely derided as "HMS Refit" and "HMS Repair". Both ships served in World War I and World War II. Repulse was sunk on 10 December 1941 in the South China Sea off Kuantan, Pahang by Japanese aircraft. Renown survived the war, to be scrapped in 1948."

Well, this could be fun... create your own class of unfortunately named warships. :haha:

HMS Unfortunate
HMS Unlikely
HMS Unable
HMS Unwieldy

HMS Relapse
HMS Relic
HMS Reluctant
HMS Relinquish
