Neat! I knew the Russians had something like this. Can't wait until the US finally gets one deployed.
What's an MEFP? Is that to say that it basically vents a shrapnel explosion in the direction of the incoming RPG at close range, presumably deflecting/destroying it before it makes contact?

Possibly, I know the Soviet and Russian systems used a small rocket which detonated in front of the incoming warhead, thus destroying it with shrapnel.

In retrospect, my expectations were a bit childish but....well, I was kind of hoping it would be a laser or something:oops:

There's also an 'anti-laser' in the works now which should make things interesting in the future.

With the weight of the device and the storage for the ablation particles you might as just well haul the armor around since it doesn't come with all the holes in the defenses.
That's pretty cool. I could see this being pretty effective against the usual HEAT weapons. Wouldn't do much of anything against a big warhead or a kinetic weapon though, would it...

Some reports indicated the intercept was close enough to trigger the tank’s automatic fire ‘Spectronix’ protection, which have lead to Palestinian claims of actually hitting the tank.
Does anybody know how this Spectronix system works? I can imagine that it emits some kind of foam or CO2 to kill the fire.

It's not made for such applications. It's supposed to defeat infantry-portable AT weapons. I'm still not seeing the point of the system, though. Spaced armor has the same effect at a fraction of the cost, and it doesn't rely upon blowing a large section of the tank's protective layer away to counter one warhead. We learned long ago that volley-fired HEAT weapons were an effective countermeasure to tanks; this system doesn't do anything to fix that. It might work against Islamic insurgents who are all but combat ineffective to begin with, but it's not going to stand up against trained regulars.
I have a suspicion that what we are looking at is a very expensive and all but worthless system peddled to people who don't know any better.

Ok in theory you use a magnetic beam or some sort to project a stream of diamond particles in to the path of the incoming laser. The particles deflect the beam before being vaporized (ablated). The idea is that you can take all the weight in armor on a vehicle and concentrate it against one or more (depending on number of emitters) threats. Also replacing the armor would be as simple as reloading cartridges of diamond particles.
Obviously multiple threats become a problem, and this system would be so big that is basically needs to be the same size as whatever is shooting at it to be effective.
There is another system that's been tested by Yale that absorbs laser energy as heat. Which sounds great until the vehicle mounted with this melts.
Currently lasers are going to be an anti-missile and anti-aircraft weapon, so mounting some kind of anti-laser defense would be adding defensive weight which is bad for a fighter or strike fighter. At least with a ablative armor beam it could be used as a weapon at close range. Maybe that Yale anti-laser would work on a missile to protect it from having its control surfaces shot off before impact by a Laser-CIWS.

No mirror is 100% efficient. Any weapon sufficiently powerful to damage a military vehicle is going to vaporize a mirror with the bleed through energy.

Been talked and hyped for a while now.
The counter to that is simpler than itself. It has always been like that.
Just another layer to be countered which will after some time. There's no edge that's going to stay ahead forever.

Actually this is in regards to the question of an Anti-Laser.
Diamonds can be made synthetically, so its possible to "impregnate" them with something magnetic.
I see its possible that it could be used against a projectile weapon because it would slow or knock of trajectory a shell.
Now in theory this device would put a bunch of hard objects in the path of an incoming laser beam. The laser beam hits them and vaporizes them rather than the skin of the vehicle its targeting. Really its like mobile armor. Hopefully the laser needs to recharge or cool before it cuts though, or you return fire with your laser and kill whatever is shooting.
How it works is more difficult, there is nothing except stuff on a chalk board that would make it work, but think "Tractor Beam".

I know. However, you've still lost me. How do you put enough magnetic particles into a diamond to make it magnetically impellable without destroying the crystalline strucure that makes it a diamond? I don't doubt you, but I don't follow.

Coat the things in metal, or form them around the metal. Maybe duct tape them to bits of metal. There are a lot of flaws to this defense. (http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/spacewardefense.php#Armor%7ESandcasters) Which is why I sort of laughed off the concept of a laser defense in my first post.

Damn. I was hoping you'd have some kind of great explanation for how such a system would work that I could steal and pass off as my own.:wah:
