View Full Version : Ship spotted, Time compression

Hi all,
At high time compression I sometimes run straight past moments where a ship is spotted. I have seen the changes you can me to the Main.cfg file, where EnemyDetected=1 will bring the time back to 1x when an enemy is detected.
2 questions:
1) If you are self-identifying targets as friend or foe (I think RSRD enables this...could be wrong), then I reckon the EnemyDetected flag isn't raised (as we have discovered if it is a friend or foe yet) and therefore the time doesn't return to 1x and I zoom right past. Is this right and is there something I can add to the main.cfg to handle when anything is detected (AnythingDetected=1 would be nice)?
2) I found in the forum that a "FriendDetected" flag is possible for SH5. Does this apply to SH4?
Thanks!

At high time compression I sometimes run straight past moments where a ship is spotted. I have seen the changes you can me to the Main.cfg file, where EnemyDetected=1...You could be running too high a TC for your hardware to handle = slow response, especially with ships nearby. What TC and what hardware?
Changes to Main.cfg must be done in Documents\SH4\Data\Cfg, not in your SH4 install folder\Data\Cfg...
It's a common mistake and only mention this, since you didn't specifically say which one you edited :D
I don't think you can add entries to [Time Compression] section... it will probably be ignored and removed when SH4 rewrites the file... but why not test it?
Don't know about RSRD questions... but aren't you mixing the mods?
It's been recommended to keep the US and German campaign in seperate installs to prevent any mix-up between the two...

Hi, thanks for the response,
It's not a hardware lag problem. New PC self-built last month with the berries and has no problem whizzing along at high TCs. I suppose part of the problem is that at max TC (8192 or something) if the ship spotted line appears in the message box and I react and return to 1x in a second, real game time will have moved on by 8192 seconds, or over 2 hours! Ship gone :damn:
The obvious answer is to not use such high TCs. But, there are times when a couple of real-time days might go past with no contacts. Also, using the stock game, the time would return to a slower TC whenever a ship was spotted or heard, which is the behavior I would like...so it must be possible, but may be difficult with RSRD perhaps.
Didn't know about separating US and German campaigns over two installs. You mean run the stock (+RSRD if I want) pacific campaign on one install and use another for Op Monsun (+RSRD)? It did occur to me that OM might affect the pacific campaign, but so far it seems to be ok (except for the TC problem).
Thanks for the info on the two main.cfg files, I was changing both. I tried the "FriendDetected" tag which I have seen in a few SH5 threads but it seems to have zero effect. Don't think there is much I can do about it :wah:

You can run RSRD with OM if you choose, just installs the PT traffic should you desire to go attack it.
The lite fog fix was made to correct a bug with the real env mod, I see no need for that, could mess up visuals.
You still need the RSRD patch if you actually don't have it. Not sure how the other mods would come into play as they were designed for fleetboats.

Thanks for the info on the two main.cfg files, I was changing both. The advantage of editing directly in the SH4 install-folder is that these values will become default next time you start from scratch... but once SH4 has created the folder under Documents, that's the place to change settings.
And TC 8192 :o that's just insanely high, man!
If you're searching for contacts, you may actually loose some this way. 2-3000 at max when crossing the Pacific from Midway to like a 1000 miles from the Japanese waters, then down to no more than 256 to 512. Max.
You may also experience strange things with weather when using these high TCs, but that will sort itself out once reloaded.
Re. the seperate installs, then Lurker has this warning:
"Because of recent changes to TMO v19 and RFB 2.0, OM is "NO LONGER COMPATIBLE" with TMO/RFB. If you do so you will "Break" the mods."
From first post here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134922
Now you didn't mention what mod you're using RSRD with, stock?
But anyway, I prefer keeping a clean, untouch copy of SH4 that I just copy to new folder, rename its folder, run MultiSH to make it use a different folder under Documents, like SHO, SHX, etc...
Should anything go haywire :D then it's no big deal to delete the lot and start again.

Just downloaded the multishiv, looks like it would make a lot of sense alright to separate out the various mods. Also gives me the option of a seperate install completely to try out other mods I might be interested in (wanted to try TMO and RFB anyway).
I know the max time compression shouldn't be used much, and I don't. But sometimes mid-pacific I might pass a ship, or the same affect occurs at lower TC's in busier waters.
I realise TMO and RFB aren't compatable now with Op Monsun, but RSRD and OMEGU are fine as far as the OM page says (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134922).
The lite fog mod may not make any difference, but it was made for the Real Env mod and as OMEGU used that as a base (i think) then I reckoned it would work for OMEGU. Haven't come across an occasion where I can tell or not yet. The slow water included in that does work though and I think gives a much nicer look to the water.
Anyways, it doesn't look like there's a way around having non-identified ships and automatically reducing down to 1x. This is a shame as I like the aspect of having to ensure the ship is enemy before letting some torpedoes head (roughly) in it's direction.
I'll play around with the mods with another installation and see what I come up with.
Thanks folks.
