Do you want to add more ships and aircraft to your campaign?

There are a lot of talented modders out there who have given us a huge number of ships, aircraft and land models that have seriously enhanced SH3. Where modders have created generic ships such as merchants or DDs we have a high chance of seeing them as ships are usually generated at random from all of the ships of that type that you have enabled in your SH3 install. Where modders have created more specific ships, such as a US battleship, you will only see it in a convoy which asks for a US battleship to be generated in it. This makes seeing a particular capital ship less likely.

In the past I've created a number of mods that are JSGME installs to add ships and aircraft to the game. Testing this type of mod was laborious and sometimes frustrating but the hardest part was trying to make the mods compatible with all of the supermods that are out there. In order to increase compatibility, I've gone back to basics with this latest series of releases which means that you'll have to do a little bit of work yourselves but can add the scripts to whichever mod or supermod you're using.

What I've created are a few .mis files which script the ship or aircraft onto its historic routes in game. There is still a chance of seeing the ship randomly generated in a convoy, but if you want to sink her you just need to do a little research - if she was providing support to Allied troops in North Africa over a particular period then you'll find her there in game.

Some modders have kindly given me permission to include their models with my .mis file so the download becomes a one-stop-shop to get both the ship and the script to put it into your game. Where modders either haven't given permission or haven't yet responded to my request you'll just get the .mis file and the download location will be in the Readme. If permission follows then I'll update the mod and let you know.

Before you start, there are two things that you need to know about scripting units into your game:
1. Every computer has a different capacity when running SH3. My rig tends to CTD when the campaign_SCR file gets larger than around 8200MB and the problems that some people have had when trying to run IABLs awesome Merchant Fleet Mod are quite well publicised. I recommend adding one ship at a time rather than adding them is batches as this gives your best chance of finding the top end of your computer's capability.
2. Some ship models are incompatible with others and can cause CTDs. Generally, a single ship makers models are all compatible with one another but problems can happen when using models from different ship builders. Again I recommend adding one ship at a time to find any incompatibilities.

The method for enabling these mods may appear tricky but, with a bit of practice, it is actually quite easy. If you do find it hard, spare a thought for the supermod teams who have spent months doing this to give us the supermods that we all know and love!

The method:
1. Enable the ship model through JSGME.
2. Start SH3 and ensure the ship appears in the Museum. This will give you your first error check - if it appears in the museum then you're good to script it in.
3. Copy my .mis file to your desktop
4. Find your campaign_SCR file (default location is 'C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Campaigns\Campa ign\Campaign_SCR') and copy to your desktop. This will act as a backup in case anything goes wrong
5. Open SH3 Mission Editor at 'C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\Sh3MissionEditor'
6. Select 'Open (Normal Mission)' or use shortcut [Ctrl-O]
7. Open: 'C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Campaigns\Campa ign\Campaign_SCR'
8. Select 'File'
9. Select 'Merge'
10. Check the 'Mark merged data as saveable' box
11. Select 'OK'
12. Open my .mis file on your desktop
13. Select 'File'
14. Select 'Save Scripted Layer As'
15. Save in: 'C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Campaigns\Campa ign'
16. File name 'Campaign_SCR'
Start SH3 and hunt her down!

I kept wondering if it was enough just to add a ship in the game (GWX3) to see the new ship in your campaign....I have the answer now :yeah:
How very good of you to think about that....And your tutorial is so well done that it makes the all process very easy.

I have just one question....I cannot open your Mission file ".mis file for JoC_'s HMS Argus (locked)" beeing locked It asks for a Password to open the Zip/rar....any way you can help me here ?

Thank you so much for all you work....

Justy wondering......Would you like French translation of you Tutorial and any on the readme? I am sure our comrades French speaker would love to be able tyo use your work.....(Mille Sabord Forum is the obvious place...

If you would like this Just PM me and I'll start following all requirements you might have.

Good hunting

I haven't yet received permission to use the ship model - the mod is on MediaFire so the ship modeller can check the file and let me know that he's happy with my mod. If not, I'll adjust the file until he is happy but it stays password protected until I get permission. They did the hard work, I just scripted it and while I'm happy for anyone to use my .mis files they must ask permission from the modeller to use their ship or aircraft.

I would love you to translate one of the Readmes into French so our French speaking colleagues can enjoy the mods. If anyone could do the same for German I'd be really grateful and please feel free to post on the French and German forums to spread the word about these mods.

Borgneface has kindly translated my Readme and instructions into French for our fellow French speaking Kaleuns:

5. Lancer SH3 Mission Editor qui se trouve normalement 'C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\Sh3MissionEditor.
6. Selectionner 'Open/Ouvrir (Normal Mission)' ou utiliser le raccouci [Ctrl-O]
7. Ouvrer: 'C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Campaigns\Campa ign\Campaign_SCR
8. Selectionner 'File'/'fichier'
9. Selectionner 'Merge'/'Fusionner'
10. Cochez la case'Mark merged data as saveable'
11. Selectionner 'OK'
12. Ouvrer mon fichier" .mis" que vous avez copieré sur le bureau
13. Selectionner 'File'
14. Selectionner 'Save Scripted Layer As'
15. Save in Enregistrer dans: 'C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Campaigns\Campa ign'
16. Nom de fichier 'Campaign_SCR'
Lancer SH3 et bonne chasse!

Merci beaucoup, Borgneface!

VonDos has once again allowed me to use his excellent ship models and release them as a package with my .mis files. Some of my older mods were specific to GWX which meant that not everyone could use them - this series of releases seeks to fix that and they should allow VonDos' ships to appear in any version of SH3.

At the moment I've just been using the _SCR layer but I'm ready to start playing with the _RND layer. That should allow us to always have an aircraft on a certain route but it could be a random selection of the new aircraft...

Any requests for other aircraft or ships to script? If you could send me a link to the model as well then it would make life easier.

Sounds good to me.
I would like to see random aircrafts on same route.
There are several new planes who are worth to be seen im campain.
There is a FW 190A, i think it was Testpilot who converted it, but i am not sure.
Or what about a nice Me 262, Rowi did (converted) a few weeks ago?
Or maybe a really nice Thunderbold or a BF 110 or a Ju 188 all planes converted by Testpilot.
Or what about showing a lot of Ju 52 Transports (from Testpilot) in the Mediterrain, who bring supply to Rommel? Or the same in the beginning of "Weserübung" Destination Norway?
You see, if you like, there is much to do, bringing this nice planes to the campain.
You will find them here:

In what years is it disponible? 1939 to 1945?

Also, I like a Lusitania in the jorney New York - Liverpool, as 1915 (when sunk by Imperial Kriegsmarine´s U boat). The model adequate for Lusitania - I think - is the Aquitania.

RMS Titanic is there 1939 to 1945 but her route varies over the course of the war so she won't be too easy to find. As with all of VonDos' superliners, they travel at high speed and alone so even if you hear them on your hydrophones you'll struggle to get into a decent firing position.

The Aquitania will be coming, but she'll be following her historic routes and not those of the Lusitania. If someone creates a Lusitania model then I'd be happy to script her in, but until then...

Hello WB,

I have just downloaded "SH3 Prinz Eugen Heavy Cruiser By HanSolo78" In the instruction to install the ship he writes:
"1.Just use JGSME and enable the mod. Files needed will be copied to the directories.
2.You must add the line of text below to the end of your englishnames.cfg and/or germannames.cfg:
CAPrinzEugen=Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen
3.Add the ship via mission editor"
No problems as far as steps 1 & 2 are concerned...but How can I add do step3 without a proper ".mis" file?

As I am the one asking I propose to be the one asking HanSolo78 the permission to include his mod with your ".mis file" (if you decide to create one, of course) together with a French version....

Testpilot's Me210 was a difficult aircraft to script.

The aircraft started off with severe design flaws to the point where it's final design, despite being an advanced version of the Me210, was renamed Me410 to try and disassociate it with the Me210 moniker.

The Me210 was relegated to service in the Mediterranean around Tunisia and Sardinia, so for those of you who cruise around the Med:

The Ju290 was a long range patrol aircraft designed to replace the FW200 Condor. The first operational missions were flown in November 1943 tracking Allied convoys in support of u-boats. Despite their huge range and potential effectiveness only 20 were ever flown in support of maritime operations due to the political infighting that beset the German armed forces. Once air bases in France were liberated by the Allies the aircraft moved back to Germany and were relegated to mainly transport and liaison duties.

I have tried to ask permission from mefistophel2000 to include his aircraft model but I've been unable to get hold of him on the e-mail address in his Readme. If anyone knows how to get in touch with him please let me know.

No screenie to go with this first one - you'll just have to take my (and A6Intruder's) word that it works.

This mod adds Spanish and Turkish neutral air patrols to your campaigns patrolling their national borders. There are two versions:
1. _SCR version. This will only work with GWX as it uses GWX aircraft. If you're not using GWX you'll CTD.
2. _RND version. This will work with any mod or supermod that has Spanish and Turkish aircraft.

I've received a number of requests to script supermod ships or aircraft outside of their parent supermod.

Unless I receive a request from the original author of either the model itself or the supermod I will not extract these ships or aircraft then package them up with a separate .mis fle. To do so waters down the supermod experience and degrades the work that these teams have spent years perfecting.

For any ships or aircraft that have been released as a standalone I'll be more than happy to script them, just let me have a link and I'll ask the author for permission to create a .mis file and release as a single package.

Sorry if this disappoints some of you but the Subsim modders recommended etiquette remains sacrosanct for me. :salute:

Both merchants and warships will automatically appear in the game through the _RND layer. I like to script the larger merchants (mainly VonDos') and unique warships on their historic courses so that, with a little research, people can intercept them and sink them.

Yes? I read somewhere in SUBSIM about the need of scripting the warships. If not, the ships only appears in Museum. Ever I see a new ship for download, the instructions tell: "need scripting"...:damn:

For example, the Maiale. If you install the Maiale in SH3, without scripting: Is the Maiale controlled by RND Layer and can it appear in any location? (a Maiale in the coast of Miami or in the Indian Ocean??). And the planes? Without scripting the RND layer put they in any location? (the middle of the Atlantic, for example?).

Ever I have this question in my mind, but never I obtain a positive and definitive resolution.

Best regards.

Fitzcarraldo :salute:

The simple answer to both questions is no, you won't see them.

If you install the Maiale in SH3 without scripting it you will not see it as the RND layer scripts by ship/aircraft type (in the case of the Maiale it is type 200) and by nation. If you search the _RND layer you won't find any reference to an Italian type 200 as there was only one type of Italian submarine (the Scuka) and they were only scripted into the SCR file.

Aircraft are scripted into the RND layer by specific aircraft (e.g. FBWildcat) so you won't see new planes for the same reasons as above.

I've already released a mod that randomly scripts Turkish and Spanish aircraft into the campaign so here is another one that will script British aircraft around the UK coast - http://www.mediafire.com/?fvi4swlejchj5fo

I think it's time to share a little knowledge :know:

There are three scripting layers in SH3:
_LND. This is for land based units such as coastal defences, air bases and ports. I haven't delved into the _LND layer so that's about all I can tell you!

_SCR. This is for scripting named ships into the campaign, so if you want the RMS Aquitania to follow her historic routes you can research the Aquitania's history and input it's route into the _SCR layer. You can also create groups around the Aquitania to allow it to sail with, for example, a modern tanker and four destroyers. The only randomisation available to the _SCR layer is around each waypoint. If you randomise the size of the waypoints you also randomise the ships routes.

_RND. This is the clever layer as there are a number of ways you can randomise:
1. Randomise groups. You can tell SH3 to randomise the content of convoys. The group leader (e.g Aquitania) must have a 100% chance of spawning, but you can then add a V&W destroyer at 100% and four V&W destroyers at 50% each. This means that each time Aquitania spawns SH3 will roll a dice and produce a group with between 1 and 5 destroyers.
2. Randomise ships within a group. There are a number of options for ships in a group so you can either specify a specific ship type (e.g. V&W destroyer) or a type such as GENERIC Destroyer which will search for all destroyers of that nation and pick them at random.
3. Randomised chance of a group spawning. You can also tell SH3 that there is a 75% chance of this group spawning, therefore it will appear three times out of four.
4. Timed group spawning. If, for example, convoys moved from Alexandria to Greece every three days then you can use the _RND layer to spawn a group every 72 hours over a discrete time period.
5. You can also randomise the size of the waypoints to change the ships routes.

Merging all of these possibilities, you can script a convoy with a 75% chance of spawning, following a route from Alexandria to Greece every three days with any number of ships and escorts from one upwards following a different route each time, and all in a 5KB file.

The only piece you have to specify is the nation, so you can randomise neutral ships into a convoy but need to beware your spawn dates. :|\\

Very clear. Thanks!

This is the first of my .mis files to use the RND layer to allow routes to be repeated.

Every night from July 1944 to D Day HMS Bellona steamed from Plymouth to the area of Brest to dissuade German destroyers from deploying into the English Channel and threatening Allied shipping. She usually sailed with an escort of seven destroyers and the group was often known as 'Snow White and the seven dwarves'.

HMS Diadem was another Bellona class light cruiser who after D Day conducted offensive patrols along the Brittany coast, even sinking ships off La Rochelle.

the_frog has created a great model of the Bellona class, just remember that the .mis file needs to be merged into the RND layer:

In the Maik (Plissken) page, there are some links to ships. Is it possible include some japanese warships in the Pacific, for example a Battle of Midway or the attack force to Pearl Harbour? Interesant for a U boat raider in the Pacific...And allied merchant traffic from the Panama Canal (Pacific side) to San Francisco, L.A. and Hawaii.

That seems like a lot of work for very little gain as these merchants are Axis units so shouldn't be sunk and because GWX has already scripted this traffic into the game. It would make an interesting project, but for now I'm sticking with modding traffic in the Atlantic as that's where most players are sailing. On my install I've 'converted' many of molke2005's Japanese merchants into British and American ones and in the past I've done the same with warships. It allows me to appreciate his work without having to sail into the Pacific.

That's a little too much like hard work for me, so I've created a quick 'How to change the nationality of a ship' (http://www.mediafire.com/?j433h6db3bk1zzw). That should allow anyone to change any ship they like. Just beware that changing the nationality of a scripted ship (such as changing KM Bismarck into a British ship) will lead to CTDs so I recommend only changing generic merchants or add on ships and not those contained in your base SH3 install (Stock / GWX / NYGM etc.)

If anyone would like to translate this 'How to' into German, French, Spanish etc. I'd be very grateful...

If there are specific ships that you would like me to script please give me a link to the file otherwise I end up spending too much time digging through websites and not enough time modding!

JoCreation has created a huge mod which contains WW1 ships, airships and aircraft. One of those ships is the aircraft carrier HMS Argus which was pressed back into service during WW2 following the loss of a number of British aircraft carriers early in the war. She served throughout the war predominantly in the Med, taking part in the resupply of Malta and providing air cover to the Allied landings in North Africa before reverting to a training ship in 1943.

I'm unable to package the ship with the .mis file, so you'll have to download JoC's WW1 ship pack from http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=178716&highlight=jocreation then my mod from the usual link if you want to enjoy sinking JoC's HMS Argus:

I've scripted another six of his aircraft and have sent a couple of PMs but haven't yet heard anything back.

@ WB, I have a question:

I want to know if the merchants scripted in the MIS files appears also randomly in the game. The ships (for instance, Titanic) - in museum - appears as "merchant". Is the Titanic in the random layer, plus the scripted layer (merged with MIs file)?

The reason of my questions is I want to have some of the scripted ships in the WB mis files, also in random layer. Is it possible?

Many thanks!

RMS Titanic is a unit type 103 (troop transport). Any random convoy that asks for a British type 103 will have a chance of spawning the Titanic.

While I was testing my Wilhelmshaven mod over a year ago I came across a convoy full of troop transports - this included four SS Normandie, two RMS Queen Mary and a couple of other ships. While it gives awesome tonnage it wasn't very realistic so my personal install has all VonDos' ship types changed to prevent them appearing except in the _SCR file. Beware that if you just change the ship files you'll CTD because you need to change the _RND and _SCR files as well. This is time consuming to say the least!

Many thanks, WB. Are these changed types included in your MIS mods?: I put in englishnames.cfg the "TIT" ship, is this name the type of ship?

Best regards.

In order to change the ship type you need to dig into the .cfg file in the Sea folder then change every occurrence in the _SCR file (this is possible in notepad, but very time consuming). I change to type 100 (replenishment) as those ships are scripted few and far between so you may see one in a convoy but are more likely not to.

For my mods I use the normal VonDos model then re-mod it for my own use. Just a personal quirk that fits in with the way I like to play. You can only have so many 100,000 ton patrols before it gets boring!

Testpilot has very kindly given me permission to script any of his aircraft into SH3. Scripting aircraft can be challenging as their locations and actions during WW2 were often poorly recorded ('active in the Baltic Sea area' is often as prescriptive as it gets). It is also possible to over egg their locations and dispositions and flood the air with aircraft too early in the war, so I've gone for _RND files with a percentage chance of the aircraft spawning rather than a straight script.

I'm still trying to get my head around the airbase.cfg files to find an easier solution to the problem, but in the meantime the first of Testpilot's aircraft is the Beriev MBR-2:

Magic,

Sorry for the very late reply - I was on a family vacation in Berlin (wonderful city) and I'm only just trawling back through some threads.

Testpilot's Avro Anson uses the same file names as GWX so anyone using GWX will find this Anson simply overwrites the stock GWX model but will still be scripted. I'll start working on a non-GWX version so others can enjoy Testpilot's work.

Also, thank you for getting hold of Testpilot on the German Ubi forums. He's given me permission to script all of his aircraft into SH3 so I've got a fair amount of work ahead. If you find any other aircraft or ships on the German Ubi forums please give me a link. Ich lebe in Deutschland aber mein Deutsch ist schrecklich!

Another aircraft for you, but another different method of scripting it in.

The Fairey Fulmar's operational history started on HMS Illustrious and they served on the ship until replaced by more modern fighters in late 1942. I've rewritten the .cfg for HMS Illustrious (a ship from stock SH3, although improved in various mods) to allocate Fulmar squadrons to it.

There are currently two versions of the mod - stock and GWX. Please ensure you enable the right one through JSGME and if anyone is using a supermod other than GWX and can send me the relevant file (NCV_Illustrious.cfg) then I'll update this release to cover other supermods.

There's a Kent Class - that's as close as we can currently get to HMS Exeter unless one of the talented modders out there fancies the challenge of a York class cruiser? :hmmm: We've already got the Supermarine Walrus to put on her decks although it was a Fairey Seafox used in the Battle of the River Plate...

Montevideo is easy to put in for non-GWX users so I'll bear it in mind if this idea gains traction:up:

kibledede, all the Leanders are multi-texture models; the 43-version has 4, one recreates Ajax's late-war dazzle pattern (given on the recognition sheet). The other three are 1943/44/45 Admirality standard and alternative schemes -- and one of those is greenish. So, either be patient and wait until the computer picks the preferred one or re-name the dazzle pattern .tga to T01 and erase the other textures.

I've got three ships in the bank left to script but only one aircraft, so next weekend's release is likely to be a ship...

Hi WB,
as i know Magic he did not ment it as you (maybe) got it. He was not tiered about aircrafts and was looking for ships.
He is, as me, glad about every aircraft who is scripted to campain.
Best regards and thanks for your work!!:salute:

Fortunately the smilies in Magic's post told me the right story. :yep: :yeah:

If anyone has aircraft models out there that you'd like me to script please let me know as I've only got one waiting at the moment.

Hi WB and A6Intruder !

Yes, that´s absolutly right was A6 wrote, I would express with my post, that I´ve been happy over the script from the airplane !

I´ve been glad about EVERY new airplane in game !!!

Best regards,
Magic:salute:

VonDos is back  and he's brought some excellent Italian cruisers to life for us, and this weeks release is the Di Giussano class. Four ships were built and three of them were sunk in the Mediterranean during the course of the war, so if you're a Med fan then these ships are definitely for you!

VonDos' Di Giussano class cruisers:

Please ignore the class name in the screenshot and use the one in the Readme as there were three types of Condotierri class cruiser and the Di Giussano class one of these types. I wonder what ship I'll be scripting next... :hmmm:

I've updated the_frog's Bellona class as when I checked my own install I couldn't find it and when I downloaded it to double check the .mis file appeared to be empty.

I've also added HMS Black Prince's Brittany coast and Aegean patrols: http://www.mediafire.com/?qbij174hp4gfz24

WB you really ought to stop doing these. Why you say? well they're so enticing i'm running out of space to keep them! Still i'm going to contradict myself and say 'keep em coming!' :yeah::ping:

I have a doubt:
In the file 'WB's .mis file for the_frog's Bellona class (RND).rar',the readme says
Open Campaign_RND and Save Rnd Layer As Campaign_RND.
but the file 'WB's .mis file for VonDos' Di Giussano class.rar' says Open Campaign_RND and Save Scripted Layer As Campaign_RND.
Does the second one write wrong?I think it should be Campaign_SCR?Like the file 'WB's .mis file for kovall's HMS Ark Royal.rar' says
I save it and the Campaign_RND.mis turn from 8M to 346byts.

You are right - it should be 'Save Rnd Layer As...'
Well spotted zj!

All RND .mis files should use the 'Save Rnd Layer As...' function, and all SCR files should use the 'Save Scripted Layer As...'.
If the symbols in Mission Editor are yellow it's an RND file, if they are green, blue or red it's an SCR file.
