The problem is that nothing fully edit files GR2. If you are able to add GR2 in the game - this will be a miracle.

SH5 switched to using GR2 files for units like ships and planes. This made it very difficult to add new vessels.

I managed to import ships into the game but they have no damage model & are useless until the GR2 editor is completed.

Once that happens I will start to port over some of the merchant ships I designed for Silent Hunter 3.

What was the reasoning behind this?

Do GR2 files have an advantage over what was used before?

There are advantages to the Granny System yes.
It is a very robust and highly customizable system for building a Game and such.
There is a draw back though to modders.
It's a witch to try to mod things!
Now, Ubi could have bought a license to allow modding thier GR2 files.
This would require the Devs to change enuff things in the GR2 that the Modding Tools could not be used on other Games GR2 files.
Ubi obviously did not want to spend the money or maybe not allow the Devs the time to customize the GR2 format.
It's a moot point at this time but I suspect both.

I will say this.
IF I was to create a Game I planned to sell?
I'd buy the Granny System!
The development time to try to match it would greatly outway the cost.

And as a side note?
I am lead to understand one can buy an older version of Granny at reduced costs.
Say you have an agreement with a Game Company that no longer supports one of thier Games released a few versions of Granny ago.
And you have approval to release an add-on to that Game.

So, IF one got an agreement from Ubi to release an add-on,
Then contacted RAD Games and bought the Granny System?
You could sell the add-on, pay Ubi it's sacrifical cut and make a few bucks.
Any bets on who does that first?
SeaWolves for SH5?
:haha:
