Was the captain insane? Surfacing that close to the ship?

First thought was that it's (again) a manipulated video - there certainly is something "fishy" going on with different crew clothings from sequence to sequence - but they are indeed that close when engaging fire.

Which - as far as I remember my "U.Kdt.Hdb." (The Submarine Commander's Handbook) - is so not by the rules. Lüth approached at some 3000 meters and with bow pointing towards target...

Strange video...

Is that Topp ?.

Of course not.

Probably Robert Gysae. http://www.uboat.net/men/gysae.htm

I believe the splash is a very bad shot from their own gun. I watched it over several times, and you can see the smoke from the gun at the exact same instant as the splash. The sea is fairly heavy for gun action from such an unstable platform.

Was looking for some Nikon papers - and there's my U-boat Captains Handbook :88)

And I qoute from Section VII, paragraph 305 http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z15/subject_rod/smilies/redface.gif

c) ...keep at distance - not under 4000 m - and always show the steamer the narrow outline of the submarine.

d) The submarine should always try to keep in line with the masts of the steamer, to prevent artillery opposition (only the stern gun of the steamer can be used)...

So... the captain did everything wrong.
First he's extremely close - max 3-400 meters? - and he's floating with subs broadside towards the enemy.

Should be reported, but unfortunately it's a bit too late for that.

Wait... :stare:

I believe the splash is a very bad shot from their own gun...I actually think you're right!

Very realistic. We've done it ourselves a few times! http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z15/subject_rod/smilies/dopey.gif
