View Full Version : Is DW a good choice for my father?

My father and I played many hours of Microprose Red Storm Rising when I was in high school, and the other day he mentioned that he wished he had a game like that now. I started looking for a game that would be suitable for him- able to run well on an older computer, not too buggy, more sim than arcade, and generally well-made. As a tiebreaker, he was in the military from '75 to 2000, so he may have a small preference for the late/post-Cold War period.
I found my way to the Silent Hunter 5 forum, and they pointed me toward DW. I'm curious if you DW players think it would be a good choice. Are there particular mods/extras I should set him up with (as he is unlikely to dig around and figure out how to install mods on his own)? Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I'll let some of the others talk more about the features, but Frank's review is here:

The must have mod for DW is LuftWolf and Amizaur's Weapons and Sensors Realism Mod (LWAMI for short). It adds new models, and a great deal more realism. The official thread is here:

I have logged upwards of thousands of hours of gameplay and have never experienced a single stability issue; no freezes, lock ups or CTDs. I can even minimize it to do other tasks and pull it back up with no problem.

Might be if sim is what you're looking for. And wow if you intend to play the game with your dad.
There are a few supermod to try too which imo they are a must
Alfa Tau
LWAMI
RA/DWX
I've been really enjoying DW since the game first came out and it's still on my hard drive. My PC have changed three times but DW is still there installed on each new one and to think that my taste in gaming has changed considerably that now I play far fewer games and DW is still one of them. The only thing lacking imo is the nonexistent of dynamic campaign.
Note however that DW doesn't emphasize graphics or eye candy and it is not an experience sim like Silent Hunter series but rather a functional or procedural naval sim.
Some trailer to get the feel of the game

Sounds like it would work but the opinion would rest on knowing more about your dad. Is he a former military man by chance? Navy perhaps?
Chances are though if he liked RSR he will love DW. Just be sure to send him a link to subsim. There isn't a more informed and helpful DW crowd anywhere.
:salute:
Dangerous waters gets my vote too. I would imagine you guys having alot of fun with it. Stable mp; good PvP, excellent coop. Not to mention lot of playable platforms, a superb learning curve and simply you never get tired of it. Not even oldie like me. :salute:

You would have to ask him this question. Nobody on a board like this is going to say "no"

I am not former navy, but played 688(I) KH, Sub Command and Dangerous waters in my sixties with lots of pleasure.
Got 688(I) HK form my son's.
So, a yes from me.:yep:

Every time you start any particular campaign it will be a new one unless you load from saved file.
If you have finished a few of the campaign mission so that subsequent missions have been unlocked(campaign is just a linear mission progression) you can start over by selecting the first mission.
If you are into contemporary submarine warfare then DW is your game. And you MUST try any or all of the available supermod. LWAMI or DWX now that the French and Italian ones have been suspended and they are now playing with DWX.:03:
The FFG can be rather daunting to master but knowing this should not make you be afraid of learning the other relatively easier platforms.

which mod do you really advise ? LWAMI or DWX ?
do they change the campaign or just the units/weapons available ?
I have d/l both
but since it seems DW doesn't use jsgme I can't swithch back and forth between them to try it (I'm a SH4 player at heart)

Advising which to try is a sensitive issue here. DW community has been divided largely into two groups. LWAMI and DWX. Most US players tend to play with LWAMI while European and Russian player play with DWX but also LWAMI sometimes.
DWX adds many playables than the stock offers while LWAMI doesn't I think.
DWX sparked a controversy about limited usage and modifying rule because it hacked to so many protected file in the game. DW is not mod friendly that's why the hacking was needed.
Sonalysts finally allowed or more appropriately let DWX be however.
PS if you like SH4 you MUST get SH3 and download GWX or other supermod!

Umm I never tried installing the latest LWAMI they used to come with a one click installer.
My suggestion is to try BOTH and then decide which to keep. Give each mod a week or so. But they are very good mod each.

We have just uploaded a 1 click installer for the latest LWAMI, check the LWAMI 3.10 released thread. jsgme will open so you enable lwami/disable your current mod.

but looking through the periscope :the textures are there ????
do I need to install the 3.09 version first ? where to find it then ?

If you want it to actually allow you to see the ships without identifying and solving for them you will need show truth enabled. Otherwise you can only see as much as you have solved. Thus if not IDed they are just a wire ball and also note they probably aren't actually where you see them at. Once you refine tracking data they will be near the right location and move in the proper azimuth.

thought as much in the end, thanks !!!
I'm a newbie at DW

Yep, this is correct behavior.
What you see on the map, and 3d view linked to the map, is only what you think is there. If you create contact, classify it as a Russian sub, you will see Russian sub. If you only classify it as surface contact, you will see wireframe boat, if the contact is unclassified, it will show as wireframe globe.
On the other hand, periscope shows reality.
You can enable 'truth' on the map and 3D view in the map popup menu, or using CTRL+SHIFT+T. But then you will see everything, every contact, every enemy, every torpedo.

That's the beauty about DW :03:
That your situation awareness is merely as good as your detection and plotting.
Of course if you're playing aircraft or helo or FFG visual IDing comes immediately but if you're playing submerged sub . . . well those sonars are your eyesight. The TMA being your aim. You even mostly engage identified hostile contacts without having the periscope up. :yep:
