View Full Version : what SH5 needs

this is an opinion piece keep in mind:
What i think SH5 needs is
1. a truly dynamic campaign spanning the entire war. Truly dynamic in the sense that you are not ordered out to the sprawling Atlantic ocean with instructions to sink an exact/specific ship or exact specific type of ship by a specific date. spanning the entire war as in a) realistic August 1939 sailing dates through May 1945.
2. More believable crew. no 50+ year old navigators. No eye patched men. none of that BS. (i know, i know, there is an eye patch removal mod.)
3. More realistic interiors: in other words, detail, immersion, and not leaving important parts of the boat out. give us the dinner table, give us the crapper, load the boat up with food that dissipates over time.
what else does everyone else wish SH5 had?

load the boat up with food that dissipates over time.
As the StateMachine class no longer works like it did in SH3/4 this will be very hard, if not impossible, to do :nope: Losing that class has put a big hamper on what neat and exciting things can be done with SH5 :damn:

and they told us it would be the most moddable version in Silent hunter history. :haha:

Last time i looked , i could choose not to accept a specific mission and just go anywhere .

yes but had you looked a bit harder you would notice the increase in ASW patrols as a result of your "failure" to bend to the will of ubi's mission orders

Last time i looked , i could choose not to accept a specific mission and just go anywhere .
The one time I tried that, going on patrol without a mission, there were no ships in the port. If there aren't ships there are there any out at sea? I didn't have the patients to look. So I started over again with a mission.

If there is something worked out/finished in SH5, thats the dynamic campaign engine. And its working great, at least after 43 its just amazing, I experienced this at full working on the extended campaign. You can play the whole SH5 campaign without accepting any mission and still have loads of fun.

I think SH5 needs to be re-evaluated as things have moved on quite a bit from v1.2 and there seems to be a lot of misinformation floating about.
The megamod release would seem the most logical time to do that, with the following objectives:
1. Overall rating of SH5 v1.2 + MegaMod
2. What is still considered broken?
3. What is still considered to be a weakness or poor implementation requiring improvement?

Where is the dining room on the boot? AFAIK We already have it, its just folded away and now being used as a bunk/chart table.

As far as adding detail, and changing things to be more historically accurate for the interior, you can try my interior mod V1.2. It does not add any missing parts of the boat, but it does a lot of other stuff.

The only thing keeping me from playing is the lack of merchant ship variety.

Anyway, hope the link helped.
Hi and happy new year Subsim!
First time poster, but long time reader here. Awesome site and awesome modders! I've been playing SH 5 for a few weeks now and I'm absolutely hooked with it. I think it's now totally different game than the one I bought. Crucial things have been fixed and now you can start to enjoy the gaming.
There are still few things that really annoy me :damn:. And they are all audio related! Here comes:
1. Watch crew should automaticly call out contacts in a loud voice! TC should drop to 1 and there should be clear info about the situation. Now I'm sailing days with TC x 1024 and when there is a contact, only thing that happens is time drop to 8. I have to ask for a report to see what is going on. Seems a bit un-dramatic! Same thing when I'm submerged. (I'm playing with no map contacts on.)
2. Alaaarm!! Somebody else was also asking about this. When I command my crew to battle stations, the only effect is a small icon and a "CLICK!" sound! There needs to be some action! Shouting, footsteps etc.
3. Wasserbomb! I think it's crucial that the sonar man tells that there is depth charge coming this way. Also I would love to feel the shakes of dc even if it doesn't hit my sub.
I really hope that it's possible to fix these things. These are small issues but really add excitement and tension to the game. I have a bunch of mods (also audio) but these issues still stay the same. Here's a list of the mods:

Current UIs version is v6.1.1. I would recommend upgrading as the newest version includes radio messages which really adds to the immersion of the game :yep:

Give me a reason to walk around the boat. I mean besides just looking.
There are crew but you can only interact with very few. That is almost trivial in how it is done.
It is a waste of cpu to have dudes sitting up, lying down, waving their arms, and repeating. They don't even get up when action stations called.
I'd rather see a video of the torpedo room (animated) with more than two guys. I'd rather see an interactive ward room/ table where you can get information and give orders different than in control room.
The eye candy works only for the first couple of times. After that, there is no reason to go beyond the hydrophone station.
There is certainly no reason to keep asking the crew about their family.

Yes, thanks TDW! Already tested it, it's nice to have more things to do during patrols when you just watch the days go by and nothing is happening. Looks good!
Someday I hope that the game will have every member of the crew somehow modelled (icons on the crew screen or something) and that they can be injured or even die. It would be awesome if you are admiring the sunset on the deck and then sneaky airplane would attack and you run inside the conning tower but the bullet hits you, the captain, and you would be injured! Reduced walking speed etc...
But right now I just hope that the most basic things would be there. I really need an alarm sound effect and depth charge attacks that shake the walls of my apartment! Too bad i'm no modder...

For me sh5 needs :
1) A big megamod with fixes and upgrades
2 ) Possibility to import ships and submarines from sh3/sh4 or 3d programs.
3) A fixed campaing with realist targets
For me its the tonnage requirements, I feel like I'm at a job instead of an adventure. I loose interest after going back and forth to reload to meet the quota.

well...any sub sim that requires sinking 100.000 tons in the first six months of war is simply ridiculous
so sh5 is simply ridiculous compared to sh3 and sh4 with their megamods

The real war saw German aircraft used to scout for targets. This is only simulated, I guess, by the radio contact reports. We never know where they come from.
If a mod could simulate the way these aircraft were used and indicate when an air contact report was made, it would be good immersion effects.
Internally, get the crew doing stuff, like the visual repair guys in SH4 who turn wrenches to simulate repairs.
Empty those bunks when actions stations called.
Get some folks walking around through the sub, doing things or carrying stuff.
