I personally think that the modding-community has covered most of the basic issues Stock SH5 had and that is, today, a very playable game. As much critic i was in the beginning i now think that SH5 could be the best naval sim we´we seen.
There are some mods, however, that i would like you to take into consideration. These are:
- Lights on ship-mod. As it is in SH3-GWX. Specially in the beginning of the campaign. It isn´t realistic with pitch dark ships sailing across the oceans and would be a major boost if you currently uses w_clears Environment Mod, where the night is totally black.
-Begin-in-August-1939-mod. Please, add a better name. Also, from SH3/GWX. Instead of beginning in September, why not add realism into it? According to Hitlers Uboat-war the uboot-flottila was already positioned in their patrol-areas when the war begun and they leaved port some two weeks before 3 September. I don´t now if this is possible given the tutorial, but hey, the tutorial is unrealistic to begin with. Your kaleun says it is war and after you have docked in Kiel and begin your first campaign it is still 3 September ;)
Never say die.
-Removal of convoys in 1939. Still early days in 1939 and the allies already sails in convoys. Not very realistic. Although, it is not completely unbearable, it is a bit disturbing.
As i see smoke on the horizon in shape of a Mega-Mod in my binoculars, basically everything needs to be covered when this launches. If these mods already exists, and i somehow missed it, my apologies.
Happy Holidays!
In the first campaign convoys are pretty rare and most of the time they are unprotected. At least in the British Coast mission I used torpedoes only after I spent all my deck gun ammo. The dynamic campaign is the best feature of SH5 and its working great. Later, after 42-43, the convoys are getting bigger and bigger with extreme escorts that include carriers and even BB's. So, its pretty realistic.
I totally agree with the lights on the ships feature, but only at the beginning of the war if is possible. Sailing on seas filled with u-boats with the lights on is like a naked chick in a pub.

I must, and embarrased doing so, admit i haven´t even seen an enemy yet. After weeks of mod-tweaking. However, my radio contact is filled with reports of convoys, and "task forces", and also stories about large protected convoys from other gamers.
Perhaps i was in a bit of hurry :)

Agree. I don´t know when they, historically, decided to switch of lighting on ships due to the Uboot-threat. Perhaps when the convoys where defended by task forces? But take into consideration that even german ships sailing in german waters are pitch dark (and the same goes with british ships in british harbours).
But of course i don´t ask for a floating circus at North-Atlantic in -42 :DL

Some good ideas there. For beginning in August it would be helpful if the first patrol started on August 19, which is when fourteen boats were actually sent out.
Also, does SH5 allow you to start in any month of the war? I'm not talking about the end-in-1943 thing - that's known. I mean can you start a career in March 1942 or only at the beginning of the year? SH1 had that, but none since. SH3 has it modded in.

Perhaps you are unaware that the first convoy, AB.1, consisting of eight ships, left Gibraltar on September 2, 1939. RED.1, also eight ships, departed Clyde for Bombay two days later.
On October 1, 1939 there were no less than sixteen British convoys at sea.

Exactly. In SH3/GWX the options was to sail off 1 August and that was way too long awaiting (Solved with TC though).

Not without abandon a couple of patrols before they even started. I think we need something like an SH5 Commander for that (and wouldn´t that be sweet?).

Ok. Thanks. Didn´t know that.
I have something more:
Have a look at this video (and enjoy a good remix coupled with nice pictures):

Seeing at min 1.20 when the two uboots meet each other, and look at the crew waving their caps. This is how it is supposed to look. Could it be done with mods or is it too hardcoded for that? I am not satisfied leaving an port, meet an AI sub (or a ship) UNRECKOGNISED.
Silent Hunter as a game has a major flaw in that the environment outside the sub is dead. The cities is ghost-towns, the crew on deck is repeating themselves (the walking-up-against-an-officer-salutes-and-back-again-routine) constantly.
Watch-change at the conning tower. Although they are brave and doing their duty for the fatherland. It is the same lads on watch for an entire patrol. Even i can´t demand that from my crew. Also, my second in command and LI standing at their post day and night for over a month. A nap or two would´t harm them. I think in this area, SH3 outperforms SH5 since this could be done at least manually.
That it´s for now.:)

I'm still wishing for one for SH4. :rotfl2:
But you're right, it would be nice.
