View Full Version : Just sank a destroyer, time for a mod

So I just sank a destroyer...in an S-class...using the canon -_-

Was running surfaced trying to sneak into a shallow port to take pictures (I forget the name, the one you use as base on Java). I get jumped by a destroyer, the water is far too shallow for me to dive, nearest deep pool is about an hour away at flank speed (those diesel pigs aren't very fast on the surface :P). So I'm thinking my days are numbered, but one can't go down without a fight, so I man the deck gun. I have it front mounted, so it doesn't get decent angles very often, due to me trying to run away :P

The destroyer hits me twice, but doesn't cause too much damage. Suddenly it stops firing :hmmm: I'm unsure if my gun crew killed theirs, because I had ordered them to aim for their weapons. To add to the strangeness, the destroyer starts dropping depth charges, while I'm on the surface, and the water is about 15-16 meters deep. Needless to say it's bloody close to blowing itself up.

While this is going on, I keep lobbing shells at him, until he blows up and breaks in half.

This experience has just ruined the game for me. So I need recommendations on good mods, like TGW for SH3 type mods.

I don't think you'd have that problem with TMO.

Also, try Websters S-Class mod

If the water is that shallow the DD may have simply run aground. I lured a couple sub chasers into running aground in harbors and the AI being notoriously stupid had dropped depth charges while the ship was aground and they blew up.

Yeah, I have to admit, I was a DD sinking fool when I played stock. After a while, I lost count of how many DDs I sank. After loading up RFB and TMO, things were a little different. Now, my DD sinking average is a significant fraction of what it used to be. In RFB, the sub is a lot slower (turn hard, on the surface at flank speed and you'll find yourself down to 8 knots) and more cumbersome to maneuver while trying to evade, almost impossible in fact. In TMO, it's just plain suicide to try and take on a DD in a surface action.

I could take battle 3 DD's on the surface and win in stock. Another problem is the stock DD shooting range, think it's 3000 yards. With TMO you'll find them shooting...a lot further away. Another problem in stock is if they can't see you, you can hit them and they won't respond, just keep patrolling until you sink them. With TMO, if one starts shooting at you, crash dive and you may live with damage, fight it out....probably gonna die quickly.

Sweet, I'll give those two a try :) It's not the first time the AI screws up completely, I sank a carrier because of it a while back. Granted that wasn't with the deck gun, but still.

It was in the patrol before this one, got a report of a large task force heading my way. I find it, but to my horror it has changed direction, and is now "crossing my T", at a distance too far away for a torp shot. My heart sinks, I know I don't have a chance in hell to get into position with the S-class' surface speed, and I see multiple carriers and heavy warships. Suddenly though, I see a carrier that hasn't changed course, and is heading right into what will be a near perfect firing position for me :P All the escorts stay with the main force, this carrier is completely alone. I send it to the bottom with 3 torp hits out of 4 fired. The others are long gone by now, with escorts and all. Not even a single DD shows up. I figure it must have been AI screw-up, I see no logical reason for that carrier to have kept going straight when the others turned :P

Truth be told, it's still quite possible to win a surface engagement with a DD, even in TMO. However, it's very risky, and you'll likely take a beating in the process. And if there's more than one, forget about it. That IS suicide.

Still, at least it's a last resort type action in TMO. In stock, you can go hog wild sinking surface ships twice your size with the deck gun. :P

P.S. Off-topic, here, but does anyone know which mod is the "nuclear torpedo" mod? The one that lets you propel ships into the air when you hit em? :) I'd like to relax a bit with the game, take a step back, and screw around. :)

Yea, you can. I've taken out some at night when they can't see, but in a real duel when they're shooting back, you're not gonna win. They're a few methods where you can still defeat DD's easily on the surface with a 40 bofar, but unrealistic and really a cheat, so no need discussing it, although rather easy to figure out.

Hah, I might just stay with vanilla a little longer, just to see how large a ship I can sink in surface combat :haha:

Slightly off topic though, are there any records of a submarine, regardless of nation and era, that has taken on a surface warship and won? I know I've heard of a few US commanders using their boats as MTBs in shallow waters, but I don't know if that was just against unarmed merchants.

What are you calling a warship:haha:. Never heard of a sub attacking anything larger than a DE on purpose, then it's was they couldn't dive...and still didn't win. Some subs took on smaller minelayers, Qships, patrol boats, ect..

I'm sure a few subs had to fight DD's on the surface, we just never heard much about it since they lost and were never heard from again.

I'm goin' down

Go to Subskippers Bag of Tricks thread. Find a post by Rockin Robbins. Below his post is a link to his subnuclear torpedoe, as of the last time I checked it out.
