But the robot just copies the human expressions recorded by the camera. That's still a long way from genuinely creating its own expressions depending on the situation.

The mechanics are there. With todays processing power and software ...Yep with today's technology it probably is possible. But unless somebody creates a good algorithm, the hardware alone doesn't matter.
I mean, we aren't even able yet to create programs that even speak a human language fluently:haha: (see google translate). How are we gonna create robots that respond in a human manner to different situations?
