View Full Version : Weird... blew up during training?

Just moments ago, my fresh U-boat commander and his crew were killed during training and I really don't know how it happened. After sending fourth target to the bottom, I turned the boat towards only remaining ship, hit time compression and moments after I was flooded by damage reports of all kinds - 5% hull integrity, all compartments flooding, many dead (including everyone in forward torpedo room) There was nothing hostile (after all, it's a training mission - before the war!), nothing to collide with... does this game model incompetent sailors accidentally detonating a torpedo while reloading? :o

I haven't done the training missions in a very very very long time ... so I can't remember if this is possible ... but from your description ... it =sounds= like you ran into a mine. Of course, I'm just guessing, but that is what that sounds like.

Okay one of two things pops into my head.

1. Time compression, just how much time did you advance? Its a dangerous thing when heading towards another ship.

2. mines, you hit one and boom!

Are there mines in the training missions? First I have heard of them, but then I haven't done them in a long while.

Sounds to me like you rammed something.

WOW
I have lost a ship on a patrol just out of the harbor by hitting a mine; I thought I had the record but you have topped it.:woot:

nothing to collide with...
Except the ship you turned toward. I've been run over by ships in fog while running at TC.

No, but it does model incompetent captains not paying proper attention to their situation. How close to the last ship you sank were you when you took the damage. A very long time ago I died in a training mission when a ship I was shelling from 500 meters blew up, taking me with it.

haha there are some really funny ways to die in the training missions... I once collided with an aircraft I had downed in the AA training and died from that. :har::haha:

Yup, that would be it (except the slim possibility of running into a mine, but who would put mines in vinicity of Kiel before the war even started?). I'm sure I didn't ram anything (the ship I turned towards was still a dot on horizon after it happened, and since I didn't use time compression until I completed the turn, I'm also sure I didn't ram the sinking one). But being damaged by explosion seems more likely (I think I was about 600-700 meters from my last target) though I assumed that if the initial "huge" explosion did no harm to me, secondary explosions while the sinking ship is already underwater would also be safe. Well, wrong assumption.

So, how far from exploding enemy is considered safe?

You will find the mine defences of Kiel were laid (in game terms) from Jan 38 and remained until Dec 45.

Ouch... I don't think even Field Marshall Haig would order his men to conduct training exercises in the middle of a minefield.

So there are mines in the training missions? And no mention of them in the SH3 User Manual (which is useless, granted; still)?

Thank you Ubisoft for making the game easy for newbies. I am not sure I would have stayed with the game if I had gotten blown up in training.

Apologies, let me make myself clear....I was talking abot the SH3 game with the GWX3 supermod added.

There is a page you can pull down (from I think the periscope station) in the upper left hand corner of your screen that shows you where the defensive mine fields are laid out at all the ports. This is in GWX 3.0 Gold. :D You might want to check that against your position where you went BOOM.

I think Jimbuna can confirm this as well.

It's in the F5 Navigation Map screen.
