View Full Version : New Earth-like planet discovered
Gliese 581g is in the 'Goldilocks zone' of its solar system, where liquid water could exist, and is a strong contender to be a habitable world. Astronomers have discovered a potentially habitable planet of similar size to Earth in orbit around a nearby star.
A team of planet hunters spotted the alien world circling a red dwarf star called Gliese 581, 20 light years away.

I so wish i could explore the vastness of space.
it is the greatest disappointment of my life that i don't have the ability to physically do so.
Yes it would be an amazing feeling to be able to experience more of the huge and unimaginable diversity in space, but physically it may be we all share

wow, pretty awesome as far as discoveries go.
There's hundreds of possible Earth like planets that have been found already. :03:

Learn remote viewing? I've heard it's possible to explore space with remote viewing. If you can't be there physically maybe spiritually or mentally.:D
Better than being in someone's heart or consciousness spying for a malevolent government or tyrant.
Yea I'd want to go to distant stars too. I'd want to see and feel so small and in awe . . . .and perhaps make a first contact on an alien planet and say We come in peace! LOL

Same here. Something I've always wished for but can't have. :yep:

At one time Venus was thought to have huge jungles and oceans of petroleum. :haha:

Don't get me wrong I'm all for peaceful contact but we have to do it right...

Yeah, we've had some pretty strange ideas about the moons and planets. :DL

SFC Ruth might be on to something there. Wonder if he'd take me and GoldenRivet along. :arrgh!:

As long as I can come along as a representative of the company financing the expedition... ;)
There's only one decent planet there...
I think you know what I mean...
Yeah that's right, Puck.

If we ever got M/AM bombs working we could push an Orion type drive up to around 30-50% of the Speed of Light. :03: 40 years isn't so bad. :O:
Isn't that the planet bottom?
See, now this is what happens when I try to be clever! :damn:
Yes, that's the planet Bottom.
I wonder if there IS a planet Bottom...well...other than Uranus. :hmmm:

Nobody has said it, so I guess I'll say it; this planet, if it is habitable, is twenty light-years away. With current propulsion technology, it might as well be a billion light-years away. Even if the planet was made of solid gold, there would be absolutely no reason to go there. The cost of the trip would never be recouped.

The cost of building a ship capable of getting there in 200 years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_%28nuclear_propulsion%29#Interstella r_missions)would be about 6% of the US's GNP (900 Billion Dollars) which equals about 128 dollars per human on Earth, or 3,000 dollars per American which is slightly more the US spends on its military per captia.
