to my knowledge there is no limit. having the cold war mod enabled i´am running so far 22 player submarines, 10 playable ships and several new AI vessels as well as additional sensors, guns and other stuff. no trouble yet.

I'll be frank and direct:

The people who post in this thread seriously need to buy Dangerous Waters :haha:.

It's the appropriate game for modern sub simming. Sure the graphics is not that compelling but with supermods it's definitely the one modern sub sim game out there.

Modern sonar, solution making, modern torpedoes, modern adversary, modern naval platforms it's just bloody fantastic if contemporary naval sim game is your thing.

haha, I have dangerous waters, but I don't like the damage models, its pretty much one hit death... which I find pretty unrealistic
I also don't like the scale of the units... on the external everything seems too small

I have Sub Command, but haven't played it in a long time. I do want to get DW though. One hit kills is probably pretty close to real. I've never been hit by a torpedo, nor shot anyone. Well, at least not with a warshot.:O:

Observe this video of a one hit kill with a Mk 48.

but the question is, can a Mk48 take out a large carrier in one shot? Or what about the Yamato :har:

Actually the torpedo thing being one hit one kill is realistic.
On the 3D model well DW is less about graphics it's more about gameplay of detecting, solution making and executing your prey. It's more about engaging your hidden enemy or attacking without visual data. Your enemy will be represented by mere electronic sound signal and frequency lines detected and processed by the onboard computer than 3D models. It's a completely different approach from the beautiful 3D world of Silent Hunter series. In fact you can disable the 3D part in game option and play without problem even in fact making it more realistic this way. The only way to look at 3D models that way would be to see them through periscope or surfaced bridge view within visual distance! The power of modern submarine is simply amazing it's a one hit one kill weapon for most things

Yes you're right modern heavy weight torpedo is a one hit one kill weapon for most target.
Get DW it's much better and with LWAMI supermod or DWX from Russian community it's super duper cool if it's your thing!

but the question is, can a Mk48 take out a large carrier in one shot? Or what about the Yamato :har:

A nuclear tipped torpedo might do that but a conventional Mk48 would not kill a supercarrier in a single hit both in RL and in game(Sub command or Dangerous Waters)
A single hit will probably sink it eventually though in real life and will likely disable it . . . . though it may not start to sink immediately. Russians for one have designed a super heavy weight torpedo that's able to sink a super carrier with a single hit. It's their 65-76 torpedo with double the warhead than most heavyweight torpedo! If that's not enough it can carry nuclear warhead too!

ETR3(SS)
10-18-10, 12:48 PM
It would probably take about 4 hits with a Mk 48 to sink a carrier (Nimitz class). Carriers are built large -obviously- so you would have to cause unrecoverable flooding vice breaking her keel in half. Nuclear torpedoes are out of the question in the US Navy, the last one was the Mk 45 and that was withdrawn from service in the early 70's. As for the Yamato, I could see it taking 2 or 3

Karle94

One shot-one kill with a MK-48 is defenitly possibly. I have seen the video of the HMAS Collins fire an ADCAP on a Spruance. She broke in two and sank.

Back to topic
@Schwieger: So install it and install either LWAMI or DWX! I'm playing with DWX 1.2 myself. It's a hell of a game!

@ETR3(SS): Hmm yea but even one typical heavy weight torpedo would probably cause system shock causing multiple system failures and fire and forcing the sealing of water tight compartments to prevent flooding from sinking the entire vessel. The torpedo doesn't have to break her keel or break her in two to sink her. Even a single typical heavy weight torpedo may disable her if a carrier didn't come with enough water tight compartments and especially if she kept sailing with a hole under her keel. A disabled carrier may not be a sunk carrier but its combat value then would be the same as being a loss or significantly reduced and even when not completely or significantly disabled the carrier would be forced to reduce speed and becomes a liability with increased noise caused by her deformed under water hull and forcing the whole battle group to reduce speed to match hers.

There's simply no under the keel protection of water borne vessel. Heck even there's no longer side armor belt found on WWI and WWII era battleships to protect the ship's side from both shell and side torpedo attack.

The terrorist attack on USS Cole for example has been cited by Russians to have caused a total loss for the US Navy of the said vessel(I don't know the accuracy of that claim but The first vessel of the class took less than a year to complete while USS Cole underwent 14 months of repair!). Sea borne vessel is just vulnerable. Another example is the British loss of warship due to a single hit of anti ship missile and to think a torpedo as a much lethal weapon carrying far larger warhead than a relatively small flying missile warhead.

and a quote from history
HMS Ark Royal, an aircraft carrier in WWII, was sunk by only one torpedoBut of course non heavy weight torpedo has a much lesser chance of inflicting systemic damage to a modern super aircraft carrier. Most countries which operate submarines don't even have heavy weight torpedo in their arsenal.

I don't mean to spam or go hijack this wonderful thread but I'd like to share some several screenshots of modern submarines from Dangerous Waters with DWX 1.2 supermod. I'm a submarine enthusiast and I just feel you guys are too. I will not add any more than this one post. The screenshots are from missions(scenarios) I designed myself for DW to be played with DWX.

Exercise Triumvirate

You're in command of the Type 212 SSK participating in exercise codenamed Triumvirate. . . . .

It's now 6AM and the exercise has just commenced.

Crazy Ivan

It's August 1995, Now is 8 in the morning and You're in command of the Russian SSBN Typhoon. . . . .perhaps it is time to check baffles . . .

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/roh_kudus/baffle.jpg
Now are you a good skipper who is able to apply an effective countermeasure to enemy submarine trailing on your command?! This is a skipper dueling another skipper in the battle of wits. Who will prevail?

As advertised

You're in patrol in the Yellow Sea when you received an order to intercept a North Korea Frigate and get close enough to take pictures of her hull then sink it(with torpedo only)!

You'll be operating in the littoral waters but then again it's the playground where the USS Texas a Virginia class submarine has been touted for.
Or was that just mere political justification for its existence? Time to find out!

Perhaps this could be your ticket to the mediterranean. You're the skipper. It's your call.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/roh_kudus/AlmostRightBelow.jpg
On the other hand if the cruise ship took torpedo hit intended for you and you were sunk in the strait in the end you would be an embarrassment to the Soviet Naval Command.

Improvise, be vigilant, you have the initiative, you have the conn!

The phrase "in the baffles" is an indication that you are behind a target. If the ships has sonars and hydrophones it can`t detect you as the ship or sub would only hear themself. You may call it a blind spot. That`s why American and the latest Soviet subs had towed sonars.

It is as what Karle wrote.

A blind spot directly behind a submarine which is not equipped with towed array sonar(sensor). That said submarine would not be able to detect anything coming directly from behind it because it has got no sonar or sensor array that's able to detect sound directly behind it as it is not equipped with towed array sonar.

A submarine with towed array sonar however doesn't have any baffle and is able to detect any contact coming behind it or behind its propeller as it is towing or dragging a sonar array behind its propeller at some distance. :salute:

360º coverage is impossible in a submarine. Without a towed array the baffles look something like this.

http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr74/cbleyte/Submarine_baffles.png

The dark blue area would be the area that the spherical array can't hear because the submarine is in the way. If you'll look at the bottom left diagram in this next picture you can see the sonar coverage of a Virginia class submarine. Quite the difference. Picture is too large to post so here's the link. Note that there is still a blind spot behind the submarine as the towed array is a couple thousand feet behind the boat.
