Ok this is a sad story.I recently lost my hard drive and had to put a new one in the old boat anchor,I've got this new drive formatted perfectly.I copied some of my games over from the old hard drive to the new one from a external hard drive docking station and so far they seem to run just fine. Now here is where the trouble begins.Today I decided it was time to copy my heavily modded version of GWX,SH3 over to the new hard drive, the copying went well I made sure to get all the file and folders.Tried to start game and got the old Silent Hunter 3 has encountered a problem and needs to close error message. Here is my question what could I have missed in the copying over part that will not let my old modded version start?Just for a test I made a new install of the game from disk onto my new hard drive and it started, why won't my modded version start? :hmmm:

you have a text message to show where the fault lies in, and if you receive such a post and save it more easy too see what wrong the maybe, perhaps is it a some file missing

No real text message appears, just the Silent hunter 3 has encountered a problem and needs to close error message. You can go into it and look at the data but,it's just a bunch of zeros and a lot of codes.Oh I'm using XP forgot to mention that.

Just copying all the files from one drive to a new one isn't enough. When you install a game on to a computer, the installation program not only copies files to the game's folder, but also writes a number of new files elsewhere. Some of them are hidden. The installation process may also make specific changes to files in your operating, graphics and sound systems.

So, to work, the game needs to be installed on the hard drive, not just copied to it from a previous installation.

Best thing to do is to install SH3 cleanly and patch it as you wish. Then install JSGME and run it once. Close down JSGME. You can then copy the contents of your old "Mods" folder into the new JSGME "Mods" folder and activate the mods as normal through the JSGME interface.

If you've used mods without using JSGME - say you've altered your "Sounds" folder directly. Again, you can copy the contents of such folders into your new installation.

The key is a clean installation of the game. After that you sould be able to copy and paste your mods to put you back to where you were.

All the best.

My god man there is literally thousands of them.In the time it would take to write them all down I can get my game back to the way it was using my new install. Thanks anyway. :yeah:

...So, to work, the game needs to be installed on the hard drive, not just copied to it from a previous installation...No, no, you're wrong, Von Manteuffel.
In case of SH3 you don't need to install it.
All you need is to copy the game folder and run sh3.exe to play the game otherwise e.g. 'MultiSH3' wasn't possible...

The cause of Gumpy's troubles must be a different one...

The cause of Gumpy's troubles must be a different one... Now that you mention it your right I have other installs of the game on different external hard drives and they aren't working now either I wonder what I'm missing on my new Hard Drive? The mystery deepens.

What sound card got you in your machine?
What OS?

Post the error message!

Like I said I can't post the error message it's a million miles long and full of code, I know it's important but,it would take forever to write it all down and windows changes resolution and I can't save it anywhere it won't let me.I'm just going to redo the game.I don't think it's the sound card either if it was the newly installed game wouldn't work. Thanks a bunch :damn: I hate when Hard drives go bad ( COMPUTERS GOTTA LOVE UM )

With what file system did you format your new HD?

...I don't think it's the sound card...Is it a 'SoundBlaster'?

Give a feedback when all work fine.

That's what it was the SP2 Rez fix was the problem. This should be a sticky for any guys who copy their game over from an old hard drive and get the Silent Hunter 3 has encountered a problem and needs to close error message. If they have the SP2 Rez fix mod installed in their main game folder run the SP2 Rez fix bat file. That should get their game running again on the new hard drive. Thanks guys for the reply's and I hope this may help some poor sole in the future. :03:
