It is 1942 in my current campaign, and for the last 8 months I have only had opportunity to use the deck gun 3-4 times, due to weather, increased number of escorts, and armed merchants. Like K-61, I have been considering the removal of my deck gun. (Using SH3 Commander.) I assume that SH3 Commander does not allow you to replace the gun once removed, and that you can purchase another one in-game if you change your mind? I'm guessing that there is no performance gain through the removal of said gun.
I could brave it and go gun-happy, but have been using this campaign as a training ground to learn tactics and the proper level of aggression/caution to get one out alive. I plan to go dead is dead in my next campaign, and so this learning opportunity has been invaluable. More than likely, I'll hold onto the gun until near 1943, and pretend that the extra space the ammo was taking is getting used for food, etc...
Don't know mate it's you're choice. I'm in 42 now and I still used my gun a few times. (like parking behind a stopped freighter when he only has a gun on his front and finishing him off, or what I did in my last patrol - hitting the damn Liberty freighter with my cannon, although liberty was fully armed, because I lacked the fuel to make another pass and sink it properly with torpedoes)
If I see it myself that I don't really need it I will remove it but for now I take all I can bring with me to patrols. Who knows maybe I'll find a sailing boat I hate ;)

I like your point about the sailing vessels. I usually leave them alone out of kindness, but once I had a destroyer come after me soon after passing one by. I think the sailing vessel ratted me out. The deck gun might be useful for "thanking" her.
Either way, I want to wait a another 8-9 months before I make a final decision. Would be nice to know if one can get the gun back though.

Well as you said there's no performance gain if you remove the deck gun, but as far as I know there's no performance penalty for keeping it, so unless you want to play it 100% historical I'd say leave it on there :arrgh!:
Here's an article about the guns http://uboat.net/technical/guns.htm
In RL the guns were removed from almost all boats in 1943.
As ediko said it's your choice.
It's harder and harder to sink ships with the deck gun as the war goes on.In a training career you could keep it,in DiD it's not worth it.

@JEuler
Good link. Thanks.
I'm in patrol one of my new career after Commander retired my previous career. It is Dec. 1942 but I have not used the deck gun since late 1941. Once I get back to base I will take it off for my next patrol.
I'm holding on to it because you never know when you may need it.

Agreed...you just never know when you might need it.
I've never been able to use the DG after my first visit to the States so its goes by Jun42. I was thinking about a no DG from the start of the war just trying something out different for a change.
and if it's IXC, or IXD, there is a need, and as a compliment, when you least expect it,and to use deckgun at other times is very well documented..

:hmmm:
Just sunk a coal tender with the DG, that sucker was unlucky that it was calm seas because its not worth wasting an expensive torpedo.

but they can be difficult to hit, when they zig-zag a lot
That's why I got really close, close enough to see the tender's captain. We were in open waters with no threats nearby so I threw her into flank till we got to around 100 meters.

I depends on where you're hunting I think. Where I've been the last 6 months, it's next to always too rough for the deck gun to be used. If you're in more of a seasonal location, then yes I can see that.

Not worth it in my opinion, you want to hit a fat cargo ship with your last eel and see it sail away? When I play my total immersion careers I rarely use the deck gun, due to judgment of "loss V gain", but it does come in handy as a last ditch effort. so...
Whatever you want to do, do it, but a deck gun will never be needed in a critical moment and will most likely make your life difficult. :arrgh!:

Problem is, that fat merchant is probably armed as well with a bunch of Annie Oakley's manning the guns and then your life gets really difficult.
I've dueled enough armed merchants to realize it is not worth it. I've chucked the gun over the side to remove any last temptation.

Take the guns off with your flak gun, 4-5 hits each, then she's screwed.

Or if you don't want to take any chances, drop back to +/-5000 meters and get in some long range target practice. Figure the range, or if you're lazy like me just ask the WO for it, and then direct your shots into the waterline at a safe distance. Merchants are usually terrible shots at that range, (though later war they might be more accurate) and after a few shots you'll figure where to aim. Mind you this takes far more time than another torpedo, and I wouldn't recommend taking too long close to shore :yep:
I'm considering replacing my deck gun with a 30mm Avenger gatling, but can't seem to find a mod for it...:88)
Seriously though, it's frustrating how rarely I get to use that deck gun. It's one of the best parts of the game. I like picking pieces off of the ships and watching the fires on break out on deck before sinking them lol. :arrgh!:

Foggy just strap a tank on the front of your boat its cheaper and cost effective

Yes, but I said that I can rarely use the deck gun. As I said before the waters I'm in are not good for it weather-wise. (Up north.) I've yet to see the water become calm enough to use the gun. If one gets away, I'm not going to sweat it. It's just a game, and I'll get over it quickly.
The important thing to me is to keep the game interesting, and taking the deck gun off, even for a while would be a different experience, especially because of the added historical value. (1943 removal trend.) Variety is what I'm after, not performance. It's quite obvious that tactically, the deck gun should be kept at all times, since there's no drawback to having it in-game. (Unlike real life.)
Even late in the war you will have times when you wished you had it. You've crippled a merchant or two enough that their speed is 0 and its obvious that they're not going to sink given time. After waiting for the escorts to leave going 2,000-4000 meters away is safe enough to use it to give em the last little nudge they need to finally go under. Since you don't gain anything by removing it, no reason really to remove it. Its like a snub nose screwdriver, very rarely need it but in situation were a normal one won't work you thank god that you got one/kept it.

...but I already mentioned that I don't care about such things. It's no big deal if one gets away. I'm bored with going for performance and how easy kills have become. Right now, I'd rather limit myself and historical accuracy is just one way to do so.
I've been in situations such as those you describe many times and have done the same using the deck cannon.

I use my deck gun all the time!! It makes it fun!! for example.. The other night I was out of torpedoes (besides, why use those horrible things when you have a deck gun right..) so I surfaced and took on an entire battleship fleet.. There was about 3 of them with about 6 escorts.. I took care of the little escorts first and then I started to chop down the Battle ships.. I would dive the second I would see their guns turn towards me and then resurface with guns a blazing..
I was sweating during the entire battle..
by the way.. This was with GWX and 1944 100% realism.
Ohhh.. you want proof! Fine.. I took this shot when one of the battle ships was sinking!

I'm in spring 1943 and the gun is coming off when I get to port. I'm in a VIIC and haven't been able to use it over various careers since late 1941. I am of the "historical" school of play and I, too, do not sweat a target getting away. Yes, it's a heartbreaker, but I'm not a tonnage whore. It happened in real life, why should I be any different?

You must have a different version of GWX than me. Not only are the graphics superior*, but it is displaying a GWX watermark of some sort.
I agree, the deck gun is awesome fun. PEW PEW!! KAAAPOWW!!!!! KERBLEWIE!!!
*I kid. Your graphical enhancements are excellent, GWX team.

Hey, I just don't like fighting something that cann't fight back it goes against my Morals
Just how does one eliminate the deckgun? I have sh3 Commander but I do not see an option for eliminating it. Since historically the uboats generally did not have them beginning June 1943, I don't want em beginning that date. I'm just anal that way..:DL Thanks!

I believe, just going by memory, if you click on your U-boat number in SH3 commander, 'remove deckgun' shows up on the drop down list.
As people have said, tactically there's no point in scrapping the deck gun, but if you want to remove it to get the full historical experience then by all means go ahead. Nothing is stopping you from playing your game your way

Weiss Pinguin I think it might be your Uboat type rather than number

Click on your Kaleun/Patrol name and go to section 6, to the right of your U-boat number click on the Type and the option to remove will appear.
I left port in June 43 after making some upgrades to my boat late April. I guess they delayed me in port for some time as I left port early June. The current time in my patrol is now July and the "Husky" landings at Sicily are now underway. BdU has sent several orders to Med boats to attack the landing operations.
I removed my deck gun. The foredeck looks eerily empty now. I am pretending that the extra space made available from ammo storage is now full of mouldy bread and fat, juicy brats, thus enabling me to stay at sea longer than normal. Fantasy is a large part in playing this sim. :D

Did you take out the 16-inchers with your flak gun? That's how the pros do it.
