I bagged a a British S-Class submarine for a grand total of 767 tons however I never received credit for actually sinking the unit, only added tonnage to my totals. I was puttering along and found it oblivious to my position so I lobed an electric torpedo at it and it sank after awhile. Did the game designers not anticipate such a lucky hit that they never added submarines to the sinking credit database? BTW is there a way to edit tankers so they only list oil, fuels, and other liquids as their cargo?

Was it sailing solo or in a convoy? I have seen a few British subs in convoys but ignored them for their puny tonnage They don't seem to be any threat at all. AI subs were not coded into the game; it's nice that modders have been able to add them, but since they lack access to game code their real life behaviour can't be simulated.

It was solo, thanks for your explanation it makes sense now.

Once I came across an S class and started an approach on the surface. It noticed me and opened fire. I responded in kind, and it quickly submerged. I think it was trying to ram me but that could be my imagination. Anyway since I could see the periscope I disabled it with a few shells to the now underwater conning tower. It wasn't moving, and I easily put an additional 20 shells into it, but it refused to sink. I paraded in front of it to see if it would shoot torpedoes but it didn't (it could also have been too badly damaged, i don't know if that is modeled).
Finally I shot a "vertical spread" at three different depths and hit it. The "torpedo impact" and "she's going down!" messages were simultaneous. The sinking S class would have made for some cool screenies If I knew how to take them.

I once chased an S-class down at dusk and shelled it until I got a "She's Going Down" message. It took a LOT of shells to get that message, and she never actually sank. I pulled up along side and took some screen shots of my u-boat parked along side, pretending we were boarding her.

The AI subs can only fire their guns, no torpedoes.

It took awhile to see it sink, after 1 torpedo and around 25 shells she finally sank. I was considering launching one more torp to speed things up when she finally went down.

I too can confirm that you get credit for sinking enemy subs. Here are the details copyied from my SH3Commander Captain's Log:

Grid AN 21 Ship sunk! HMS Stygian (S class), 767 tons. Crew: 38. Crew lost: 12.

As an unrelated aside, I notice from my fifth patrol onwards (my third patrol using commander), I lost the flavour text in the Captain's Log of SH3 Commander, specifically the details of cargo and crew on merchants sunk. Anybody else had this issue or knows what might cause it?

It is part of the Ships Name cfg file in SH3 Commander.

I've gotten credit for sinking S-Class subs before. I do get the rare instance where a merchant sinks in front of my eyes and the "corpse" doesn't appear on the map and it doesn't get mentioned in my patrol tonnage. The subs always seem to appear, however.

When you go into Commander after finishing a patrol, make sure you update your kaleun's personnel file before opening the patrol log. This is what triggers Commander to flesh out the log with real ship names and info.

If you are updating the personnel file first after each patrol and still getting "generic" patrol logs, then make sure you've still got "use real ship names" selected in your Commander options.

Yeah, I wish Germany could build me a u-boat as tough as those damn British S-classes! :)

One strafe with a machine gun is enough to put my u-boat in dry dock for six months!
