hello

i was wondering if it's possible to match the torpedo you
fire....to the one you see in the water....i already use a
mod for the torpedoes inside the boat

(Nauticalwolf's Damage and Torpedo UI (g) Mod V1.1)....very nice

but all the torpedoes in the water are the same graphic
now if Sh5 only has one exterior torpedo graphic, maybe
it could be modded to look muck better..realistic looking

thanks for your time

Well, it would be possible to make the textures look better for launched torps. But, the problem with matching the torps that are launched with those on board(I assume you mean the ones in the fore torp room) is that you can launch several different kinds of torps. And, only one texture is used to render all of the torps in the fore torp room. In my interior mod, I changed the textures in the fore torp room to match some actual surviving German torpedoes. So, you could check that out, and you could actually just take the texture that I made, rename it for each of the different torp texture files, and overwrite them. That way you could have all your torps look exactly the same, those inside and those outside.

If you need any more advice or guidance on how to do this, I could explain it more in depth. It is really not all that complicated once you know where to look.

that's a good start....do you know what the files are for
the exterior torpedoes graphic ? (in the water)

with the new sub skin mod and env. mod ,plus many
more SH5 looks great...but when i take exterior screen
shots the torpedo looks like a toy torpedo...i would keep
the interior ones the way they are,but i really nice looking
fish in the water would add the finishing touch

p.s. i use your interior mod.....very nice....torpedoes are
much better that stock...thanks

There are a lot of different textures used for the external torps, here are the file names:
Look in the folder Silent Hunter 5/data/Textures/TNormal/tex for the files:
-torpedo02.dds
-torpedo14.dds
-torpedo14_01.dds
-torpedo15.dds
-torpedo15_01.dds
-torpedo16.dds
-torpedo16_01.dds
-torpedo17.dds
-torpedo17_01.dds
-torpedo_body.dds
-torpedo_body_02.dds
-torpedo_head.dds

The files which end in _01.dds are the textures for little accessories on the torps, so you could just pick one of them and rename/overwrite all the others so that they match.

Be advised, this is not all of the textures required to completely re-skin them. I believe that there are several other torpedo heads, but I cannot find them right now.

thanks.....i'll give it a look this weekend

i started with your "torpedo_body.dds" and renamed to

Torpedo14.dds
Torpedo15.dds
Torpedo16.dds
Torpedo17.dds

then copied it to both TlowRes and Tnormal....no joy
there was no change for the exterior torpedo...maybe these
files are left over from SH4...mark 14...17 type torpedoes
i can't find the file that depicts the exterior torpedoes for SH5

i did find this, but its for SH4 and the download link is dead

You only renamed it to four things. Try renaming the torp body from my mod to replace all of the other torp textures for the bodies, and use the torp head from my mod to replace the one I found. See if that does not at least change some of them. Like I said, even that whole list does not get all the textures for them. And, no the files that I listed are not left overs from SHIII or SHIV I am pretty sure, because their alpha channels are set to low opacity, and that was not common practice until SH5.

i copied the other files and nothing changed in the game
i also looked at all the files in the texture folder,i found
nothing that looks like a torpedo....the hunt continues

here are the files i changed

-torpedo02.dds
-torpedo14.dds
-torpedo14_01.dds
-torpedo15.dds
-torpedo15_01.dds
-torpedo16.dds
-torpedo16_01.dds
-torpedo17.dds
-torpedo17_01.dds

great work....

i just found out by using another mod that the torpedoes do
change in the game...

(Various Torpedo Loadouts for MP & SP v1.0 - by ddrgn)

but not all change.....the electric torpedoes are the same as steam
now all we need is the file that tells the game which skin to use for
each torpedo

my goal was to get that nice black torpedo with the copper head
for the electric torpedoes, but i don't think its in the game

thanks for your help

i have a good torpedo body....silver and black model
the heads are more work..i guess cause the bend at
the nose....copper one looks good...could be better
black nose needs work....thanks again for your help

the work continues....

at this stage i'm very happy with the body (black body)
but the torpedo heads are a different story, i'm used a DDS
converter to change the files into jpegs then cut and paste
then i load the game and see what they look like...is there
another program i could use to edit ,so that i could see the
changes on the fly....right now i have to stick to soild colours
for the heads because of the way the nose is made.

i still haven't been able to find the file that controls which
skin the game will use for each torpedo...any ideas?

Converting images to different formats, working on them, and converting them back does a lot of damage to the images. A really good free image editing program is GIMP(do a google search and it will come right up). I believe that you will have to get a plugin for it to edit .dds files, but it is easy to get, and it handles alpha channels surprisingly well. Also, the file that I think you are looking for is: data/Library/torpedoes_g7a-e.GR2

do you know which program i would use to open "torpedoes_g7a-e.GR2"?
and would i be able to edit it like a text file or do i need programing exp

.GR2 files can be viewed in Goblin, which is an .exe file in the root folder of SH5, however it cannot be used to edit the .GR2 files directly. To edit them directly, I would suggest one of the many free hex editors. I use the one that is available in the download section here on subsim under utilities. I should warn you though, hex editing is no easy business, it is pretty complicated. I only know how to do simple stuff(like changing texture assignments to an extent). However, with the hex editor, you can easily find all the files that are being used to render something, so it would help you track down the textures.

question : can GIMP add a gloss finish to textures?

and if so.....which function should i use

thanks for your advice

i think the torpedo head would look better in gloss
right now its alittle dull....objects look very different
under water

SteelViking
08-23-10, 02:57 PM
GIMP can add a little bit of a gloss effect by simply upping the opacity of the image. That is, making the alpha layer more opaque. But, I see that you have already put the entire texture to full opacity, so this is not an option.

I would recommend using Goblin to add the gloss effect as it does a much better job anyway. The only problem is that you are pretty limited as to what you can apply the gloss effect to, in Goblin. I am pretty sure that it will apply it to the entire torpedo, as you cannot just select the head.

I can walk you through how to do this in Goblin if you would like. Are you wanting to do this to all of the torps?

BowfinSS287
08-23-10, 03:24 PM
no i just wanted add it to the warhead....to make it stand out more
i'm happy with the way the body turned out...but i wanted to add
more definition to the torpedo head....i think i need to find a good
texture for each colour that is consistent,so it doesn't look mismatched
on the nose...the search continues

Greetings.
Let me first congratulate this excellent group of people that make up this great Forum. Its work, has made this simulator is really real.
:up:I congratulate BowfinSS287 for his idea of change and add some realism to the torpedoes, both insiders and outsiders. I've also been working torpedoes, but more in the interior of the submarine.
We know that these torpedoes will vary according to the campaign progresses, but the textures really bring the SH5, leave much to be desired, :cry:unfortunately, I have no material support from the original textures of these torpedoes, but I saw some historical photos that these were also color metal or steel.
In the photos accessible a view to use the steel and the head color red, not where it corresponds to the color of torpedo G7a-TI, I appreciate any correction ...

These are the torpedoes with metal textures:

This is the modification of the tail of the torpedo:

:oops:Excuse my poor English.

Again my congratulations on this excellent Forum and I hope someday I can help with my work ...

i should have taking your advice,i pasted your torpedo head into my

more work and if all looks good....version 2.0 will look better
