this is something that I've wondered for a very long time and never got around to asking, but why are the Great Lakes, Caspian Sea and Aral Sea absent from SH3?
Is there some kind of mod to get them?

yeah, i want them too. they go so far as to add japan and all the south east seas, even when you dnt use them in the stock game, but then again, you are not likely to use inland lakes and stuff (although would be cool for secret pick-up-the-spy missions)

Use ref's Terrain Extracter and add them.

It's a great Tool.
At one time I had the Secret Base in Antarctica done.
With a few special 3D Models added in?
You needed to know exactly where to enter the base.
Not that the Flying Saucers would help.

While I'm here, I mine as well bring this up:
Why is there a solid land mass up north where there should be an ice cap?

The SH3 world is a "Mercator projection" - meaning that the round earth is being projected on a flat surface.

but there still should be an icecap.. and think about it, you'd never go out of the game world because you would run out of air or battery power right?

We have what the game designers gave us....unless you'd like to use a terrain editor to change it...if that is even possible :hmmm:
